The EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin expansion opens a new world to EverQuest players--literally! The expansion is set on the moon of Luclin, which orbits the main planet of EverQuest. This magical moon is divided into a land of light, ruled by discord, and a land of shadow, ruled by order. Together, the lands comprise over 25 new zones and hide many new secrets, artifacts, and unique monsters. The vast moon is designed to present challenges appropriate to characters of all levels of experience.

In addition to territorial expansion, EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin adds new game elements, including a new player race and class. The Vah Shir are a noble race of cat people native to Luclin. They are said to resemble large predatory felines such as real-world lions, panthers, and cheetahs. The new Beastlord class is an amalgamation of other classes with spell-casting abilities, but is capable of wearing only limited armor. New monsters, treasure, items, and spells complete the package.

This expansion also upgrades the technical aspects of EverQuest. Luclin is designed around a new 3-D graphics engine making full use of DirectX 8. Choppy graphics and slow drawing from engine restrictions have been one of the continuing banes of the series, but the new graphics put EverQuest in the same league as the fancy new massively multiplayer role-playing games.

And, of course, one must address the question inherent to a product based on a moon around a huge planet: no, the moon of Luclin is not made of green cheese--though its designers hint that you may be able to find it there. --Brus Wasson

5.0 out of 5 stars EQ can be a fun, social game, November 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin (CD-ROM)
I agree with EQ 12 Step Program that many people play this game only to level up and that it sucks the fun out of the game, and can have negative impacts on your real life.

HOWEVER: If you play this game once or twice a week with a set of friends who will similarly self limit, it can be a very fun, graphical alternative to the old-school D&D table top game. The fun of Everquest is TEAMWORK with friends (or strangers) to acomplish a goal (quest, item, etc.)

The downsides mentioned by "EQ 12 Step Program" happen when the player cares more about status achieved by awesome items and being 60th level. But when the game is approached as a social teamwork video game, it is very challenging and rewarding to play. There are also many guilds in the game that develop real friendships and are strongly geared towards roleplayers.

I'm 25 year old female, and EQ is a LOT of fun if approached with the correct attitude. If you want a game that you can "beat", this isn't it! But if you enjoy the journey, the interesting monsters and sceneries, and the social aspect of playing games with friends, and if you provide your own roleplaying, you will love it.

I wouldn't recommend this game for anyone below age 18 or so, because I believe it is too difficult for children to see past the never ending greed for loot and pride in leveling, to the potentially positive aspects of this game.

I hope this review was helpful and added perspective to the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perspective, November 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin (CD-ROM)
EQ is more then a game. It is a hobby! Just like crafts, cooking, quilting, building models, whiddling... or whatever else you may do. You invest time in it, and in return you get pleasure and satisfaction from your time. Some folks have written reviews here saying EQ is <enter your good or bad evaluation here>. But the fact of the matter is, EQ is nothing more then what you make it. If you don't have self-control and discipline, then EQ may rule your life! That's not EQ's fault.

I recommend this game to ANYONE who enjoys or might enjoy the sort of entertainment that it provides. Worst case....you spend a little money and don't like it, best case.... you spend a little money and find a new hobby that's cheaper then drugs, safer then any sporting activity and a great filler of free time.

... in the end, it's software, nothing more... enjoy it for what it's worth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wait.... Don't do it!, June 21, 2001
By
This review is from: EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin (CD-ROM)
If you plan on buying this new expansion to the Everquest saga then read on my friend. Read on.

I have heard many people say this game should be called "Evercrack." Let me tell you... IT IS!!! If you want a life or plan on staying involved in a serious relationship outside your online gaming life DON'T BUY THIS GAME.

The original game was and is highly addictive. I can not imagine just how much more imersive the new game will be. And I mean "new" game.

Although the concept is the same. Venture through many lands that can take upwards of hours to walk to in real life time. Fight a ton of differnt monsters. Go on epic quests to "save the world". And even strike fear into the hearts of the gods. The new graphics engine will make the game that much more intense.

I've seen the new screenshots. I've seen the game engine in action. And being an addict all I can say is, "Super killer sweet!" The new graphics are great! And as Verant's ever lasting drive to perfect this neverending world continues I can only imagine how much better it will be even after this expansion comes out.

So like I said. Don't buy this game if you have never played EQ. Don't think twice about clicking the "back" button on your browser in moving slowly away from your computer. Because this is one seriously addictive game.

But for those addicts out there... I know your pain my brothers and sisters. I know your pain.
