EQ can be a fun, social game,
By A Customer
This review is from: EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin (CD-ROM)
I agree with EQ 12 Step Program that many people play this game only to level up and that it sucks the fun out of the game, and can have negative impacts on your real life.HOWEVER: If you play this game once or twice a week with a set of friends who will similarly self limit, it can be a very fun, graphical alternative to the old-school D&D table top game. The fun of Everquest is TEAMWORK with friends (or strangers) to acomplish a goal (quest, item, etc.) The downsides mentioned by "EQ 12 Step Program" happen when the player cares more about status achieved by awesome items and being 60th level. But when the game is approached as a social teamwork video game, it is very challenging and rewarding to play. There are also many guilds in the game that develop real friendships and are strongly geared towards roleplayers. I'm 25 year old female, and EQ is a LOT of fun if approached with the correct attitude. If you want a game that you can "beat", this isn't it! But if you enjoy the journey, the interesting monsters and sceneries, and the social aspect of playing games with friends, and if you provide your own roleplaying, you will love it. I wouldn't recommend this game for anyone below age 18 or so, because I believe it is too difficult for children to see past the never ending greed for loot and pride in leveling, to the potentially positive aspects of this game. I hope this review was helpful and added perspective to the game.

Perspective,

EQ is more then a game. It is a hobby! Just like crafts, cooking, quilting, building models, whiddling... or whatever else you may do. You invest time in it, and in return you get pleasure and satisfaction from your time. Some folks have written reviews here saying EQ is <enter your good or bad evaluation here>. But the fact of the matter is, EQ is nothing more then what you make it. If you don't have self-control and discipline, then EQ may rule your life! That's not EQ's fault. I recommend this game to ANYONE who enjoys or might enjoy the sort of entertainment that it provides. Worst case....you spend a little money and don't like it, best case.... you spend a little money and find a new hobby that's cheaper then drugs, safer then any sporting activity and a great filler of free time. ... in the end, it's software, nothing more... enjoy it for what it's worth.

Wait.... Don't do it!,

If you plan on buying this new expansion to the Everquest saga then read on my friend. Read on.I have heard many people say this game should be called "Evercrack." Let me tell you... IT IS!!! If you want a life or plan on staying involved in a serious relationship outside your online gaming life DON'T BUY THIS GAME. The original game was and is highly addictive. I can not imagine just how much more imersive the new game will be. And I mean "new" game. Although the concept is the same. Venture through many lands that can take upwards of hours to walk to in real life time. Fight a ton of differnt monsters. Go on epic quests to "save the world". And even strike fear into the hearts of the gods. The new graphics engine will make the game that much more intense. I've seen the new screenshots. I've seen the game engine in action. And being an addict all I can say is, "Super killer sweet!" The new graphics are great! And as Verant's ever lasting drive to perfect this neverending world continues I can only imagine how much better it will be even after this expansion comes out. So like I said. Don't buy this game if you have never played EQ. Don't think twice about clicking the "back" button on your browser in moving slowly away from your computer. Because this is one seriously addictive game. But for those addicts out there... I know your pain my brothers and sisters. I know your pain.

I think this is going to be great, finally a change in the graphics on this game. Also, another continent to explore, and see the cool new designs to the world. And most importantly.. a new part of the vast, contineous, extradinary Everquest story. So far, Verants additions have been VERY satisfying. And about the people who keep writing bad reviews because they get addicted:.. Hehe.. I keep reading reviews of people completely dissing the game because they can't handle what it does to their social lives. All multiplayer games are like this, they're made for addictions, and to get their users to play at all hours. Those who cannot handle this game have a personal issue, not everyone treats the game like alcohol or drugs, and gets addicted to it and ruin their lives. I myself balance playing sports, keeping grades up, and playing Everquest (2 level 50s, and one 30).

The Best Game I have ever played period!,

This review is from: EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin (CD-ROM)
I have read the posts here and just had to give my 2 cp worth.I am a 34 year old father of 3 and married for 14 years. I own my own home improvement bussines and have other hobbies. As for this game ruining your life {please!!!!}.if this game ruins your life you need a life. I have been into role playing sence i was 12. I am the commander of the 58th penn. vol civil war reenacting unit. and find this game most enjoyable. If your looking for blood and guts go to Q2,Q3 and unreal. But if your looking for stratigy and role playing with the minium of violence then this is the game for you. and there are alot worse things that your kid could be doing then sitting at home with you playing a good role playing game . BTW my wife and kids enjoy watching me play the say its like watching a movie. So yes i will buy the next chapter in the game good luck and good hunting .

What was I thinking??,

I have played many games in my day ranging from the early internet muds to Baldur's Gate and all the in between, and this is by far the best game I have played. My wife used to get frustrated because I would play on the computer rather than watch television with her, as she is not a gamer... but then I made my fatal mistake... I let her play. From that point on I had to fight her for the computer just to get some EQ time, to the point where I bought a second computer just to play together and get some time on of my own. This game can be addicting (as my wife found out) but it is also excellent fun for the occasional evening. Thanx EQ.

If you don't buy this, then you're not an addict!,

I've been with everquest (LevelQuest, NeverRest, EverCrack, etc) for about 2 years. The game is amazing, when you first begin to play you could not POSSIBLY imagine how diverse and just grossly large the world or Norrath is, then once you get up beyond level 46, you won't even have to stay in Norrath, because there are planes of existance that you can travel to... but now, with this expansion they are fixing the biggest flaw the game has (since it was released in 1997-1998, they are upgrading the graphics engine. This will in my opinion make this game perfect. Much Kudos to Verant and Sony Online Entertainment for taking this huge step. Now, maybe I can quit sleeping all together.. =) (...)

The Addiction Of EverQuest,
This review is from: EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin (CD-ROM)
Unlike everybody else obvusly I think EQ (EverQuest) Is the Greatest. Yes It Is Highly Addictive (...)yes you spend a lot of time on it but there is a plus in my eyes you get know people from around the world and become best friends with them but as for ruining lives i have yet to see that. Addiction Is In The Mind Of The Beholder

Friends, please carefully consider the consequences of purchasing ANY of the EverQuest products. Before I got involved in EQ, I was a happy man with a life and lots of outside interests to occupy my time. Since I got involved in EQ almost two years ago, my life has changed. The official name of the game is EverQuest, but it is referred to as EverCrack, NeverRest, LevelQuest...and so on.This game is more addictive than pharmaceutical grade cocaine. I find that my real life friends no longer worry about including me in parties or get togethers...because we are all online now. I have found that my guild family provides me with fun, entertainment, and companionship. We talk, we hunt, we tell jokes, we enjoy each other's company and it is all done within the realm of Norrath. My friends and I no longer talk about football or basketball. We discuss strategies and conquests in EverQuest. One last word... please carefully consider your actions friend. Clicking the button to purchase this product could drastically alter your life as you know it. I have ALL of the versions of EverCrack, and will continue to buy them as they come out. I am an EQ junkie, and I freely admit this. My qualifications for reviewing this game? Hmmm... two separate accounts with 4 level 50+ characters as well as several others of varying levels. Good luck to you friend!

A Must have for EverQuest Fans,

Shadows of Luclin is an expansion pack with some excellent new features that is essential for any Everquest player. Probably the most exciting feature of this expansion is the new character models. These models are drastically more detailed than the previous models. In addition to that, new customization features have been introduced. You can customize virtually anything, from eye color to hair style. On the down side, though, your friends running the old character models will not get to see all the nifty customizations that you have made. Also, the new models take some getting used to. Trolls are now more upright, Ogres look more fierce and less stupid and elves are more refined (facial-feature-wise). Just because there are a lot more details doesn't mean that you may neccessarily like the new models. One of my favorite features is armor is no longer just a texture, but it actually adds new polygons to give your armor girth. In addition to that, Shadows of Luclin introduces the moon of Luclin, a mystical moon of Norrath that previously remained hidden in the night sky. There is a wide variety of zones to play in that add a new flavor to EverQuest, from the dank Paladual caverns to the empty void known as "the Grey" and exotic arabic styled city of Shar Vahl. Relatively speaking, each zone is 200% more detailed than the original EverQuest zones. Also, this expansion introduces the playable race known as the Val Shir. These are basically giant cat-like men who are roughly related to the Kerrans and have been estranged on this moon for a long time. This playable race introduces the new class called the beastlord (which can be played by various other races). Now you can have a warder (an animal friend) who fights for you. Unfortuantely, this new little buddies often get lost, so you need to make sure they are right behind you. The Val Shir are well detailed, giving you a variety of different fur patterns to pick from (tiger stripes, leopard spot, etc.) In addition to that, there has been a variety of excellent additions introduced since Shadows of Luclin, including the great Bazaar (in which hundreds of player gather in one place and use an interface to trade with one another). A brand new interface that is skinnable, an MP3 player and an out of game messenger so you can check in on your buddies when you can't make it in the game. Of course these are standard to regular EQ players as well. With all the features, its hard not to get excited. Previous SOL was plagued with stability problems, but these are thing of the past. Despite the extensive memory requirements (which probably aren't so extensive anymore as of this writing), there are vitually no drawbacks to buying this game. However, if you do not like the mechanics of EQ, than chances are this expansion will not change your mind as they are all still there. |
