Book Description

April 15, 2008 11 and up6 and up
The Everglades is like no other place in the world. Its shallow, slowly flowing waters create an ecosystem of mysterious beauty with a great diversity of plant and animal life. This book documents the beauty of the Everglades for young readers in text and color photos.

But the Everglades ecosystem is in trouble, and it is all about the water. People have ditched, diked, diverted, and drained the water. Plant and animal populations are declining at an alarming rate. The quality of life for people in south Florida is also at risk. Destroy the Everglades destroy the water system of south Florida.

Can we save the Everglades? Reverse the environmental abuse? Protect the aquifers that hold the water underground? No one really knows. The most recent effort, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP)--the largest environmental restoration plan ever undertaken on Earth--has gained global attention. The massive plan, which is expected to take at least 35 years to complete and cost many billions of dollars, covers an 18,000-square-mile area and requires many groups to work together.

Can CERP save the Everglades and south Florida? You can decide for yourself after reading this book.

One thing you will learn for sure: The Everglades is worth saving.

Ages 11-14.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Florida Everglades is a one-of-a-kind ecosystem found in the United States, June 8, 2008
This review is from: Everglades an Ecosystem Facing Choices and Challenges (Hardcover)
The Florida Everglades is a one-of-a-kind ecosystem found in the United States. "Everglades: An Ecosystem Facing Choices and Challenges" is an examination of the Everglades, and the plant and animal life exclusive to the region - all of which are in danger, and facing potential extinction if the world continues going the way it has. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan is looked at as well, but could it be too little too late? "Everglades: An Ecosystem Facing Choices and Challenges" is deftly compiled and highly recommended to community library environmental collections.

3.0 out of 5 stars A competent overview of the Everglades today, May 10, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Everglades an Ecosystem Facing Choices and Challenges (Hardcover)
EVERGLADES AN ECOSYSTEM FACING CHOICES AND CHALLENGES takes on the whole enchilada (i.e. history, geology, geography) of the unique fascinating system and for the most part does a good job. My problem was with the organization of material therein and its presentation. The slim sleek volume has good sized print with narrow margins and many small and a few large photos. Nearly every page is full, many with substantial sidebars that while about specific wildlife (i.e. Great Blue Heron/"Buzz Off!" [mosquitos]) and giving salient facts about numerous denizens, interrupt the flow of the seven chapters leading to the last with most material on the restoration process. If intended for children, the format seems to be a harder sell. As an afficiondo of and writer on the Everglades myself, I find no fault with the facts and case presented. It's a worthy read for those interested in finding out about the ambitious costly project to restore the Everglades and what has been implemented so far.
