Book Description

April 24, 2007
St. Petersburg, Florida - Home of the newly wed and nearly dead, so the joke goes. But what about the undead? Could there be vampires in the Sunshine State? After being raised in a mental institution, psychic Denton Ward has issues. When lawyer Nicholas Shanley collapses while arguing the most important case of his life, Denton learns that he is dying of AIDS. He must overcome his fear of abandonment, his fear of losing his good friend. He must break out of his self-imposed prison and learn to care for others. Denton's partner, Private Investigator Monty Crocetti is reunited with a long lost friend, but that reunion is cut short when her friend is killed right before her very eyes. Five bullets from Monty's .357 do no damage whatsoever, and the murderer escapes by jumping out a third story apartment window. The vampire vows to hunt and kill anyone who dares investigate their secret world. A world filled with seduction, with power, with life, with death, with blood.

More About the Author

William Mize graduated from the prestigious Creative Writing Program at San Francisco State University. It was also in San Francisco that he won his first award for writing - his short story "Super Heroes" won the well-respected Bay Guardian Fiction Contest in 1991.

After graduation in 1994, Mize returned to St. Petersburg, Florida but continued his education, studying the mystery novel with his current mentor, Macavity Award-Winning mystery writer Deborah Adams, creator of the best-selling Jesus Creek Mystery series (All The Dark Disguises; All The Deadly Winters).

In 1997, his first novel, Resurrection Angel, was chosen by noted mystery writer, critic and editor Robert J. Randisi as a finalist in the St. Martin's Press - Private Eye Writers of America Best First Novel of The Year Contest.

In 2000, taking advantage of the current Print-On-Demand technology, Resurrection Angel was self-published through Writer's Press, an imprint of iUniverse.com.

In 2001, Mize made publishing history when Resurrection Angel was nominated by the Private Eye Writers of America for one of their highest honors, The Shamus Award for Best First Novel of The Year, making it the first Print on Demand book ever to be nominated for a major publishing award.

In 2006, he returned to the Print On Demand arena, using Lulu.com to bring "Resurrection Angel" and the second book in the series, "Everlasting Life" to the marketplace. With gorgeous new designed matching covers, and a third book "Spear of Destiny" coming soon, it marks the triumphant return of a great mystery writer and inspiration for a new generation of writers who want to use the internet and up to date technology to bring their works to life.

William Mize currently lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he is at work on the next book in the planned twelve book series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dig the modern gumshoe style, February 25, 2011
This review is from: Everlasting Life (Paperback)
Everlasting Life looks as though it's trying to ride on the coat tails of a current tide of sappy vampire novels. To classify it as such a thing is a disservice to the story. This is a seedy gumshoe tale with a veneer of vampirism. Except it's not wholly seedy, either. The writing style of this novel embraces the classic detective story, but Monty is no classic detective. She's not even a classy detective-- she's punk, she's a recovering addict and she's bloody brilliant. I enjoyed this novel more than the first of Mr. Mize's as it had more of a focus on her character and her development. This particular book hearkens me back to a child watching Scooby Doo tales where the villain is unmasked in a manner that appeals to my sensibilities. The twists are almost supernatural and bring one to the very edge of disbelief. It's a great ride.

As a returning resident to the Tampa area, it has been a pleasure to read Mr. Mize's work. Both of the currently published books employ numerous scenes that are distinctly Tampa, Clearwater or St. Pete; employed in a way that evokes a familiarity instead of a shameless plug. I've been to many of the areas in Everlasting Life and this brings a particular closeness of the story to me as a reader. I rarely say I'd want to see a book made in movie form, but this reads so visually that it would definitely lend itself to a film project very well.
