Dig the modern gumshoe style,
This review is from: Everlasting Life (Paperback)
Everlasting Life looks as though it's trying to ride on the coat tails of a current tide of sappy vampire novels. To classify it as such a thing is a disservice to the story. This is a seedy gumshoe tale with a veneer of vampirism. Except it's not wholly seedy, either. The writing style of this novel embraces the classic detective story, but Monty is no classic detective. She's not even a classy detective-- she's punk, she's a recovering addict and she's bloody brilliant. I enjoyed this novel more than the first of Mr. Mize's as it had more of a focus on her character and her development. This particular book hearkens me back to a child watching Scooby Doo tales where the villain is unmasked in a manner that appeals to my sensibilities. The twists are almost supernatural and bring one to the very edge of disbelief. It's a great ride.
As a returning resident to the Tampa area, it has been a pleasure to read Mr. Mize's work. Both of the currently published books employ numerous scenes that are distinctly Tampa, Clearwater or St. Pete; employed in a way that evokes a familiarity instead of a shameless plug. I've been to many of the areas in Everlasting Life and this brings a particular closeness of the story to me as a reader. I rarely say I'd want to see a book made in movie form, but this reads so visually that it would definitely lend itself to a film project very well.
