Biography

Biographyby Ron Wynn

The daughter of jazz and pop legend Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole has forged a successful career in two phases, doing R&B/urban contemporary and then jazz-based pop. She made her stage debut at age 11 and sang in college. Cole met the writing and producing team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancey in 1973. The next year they collaborated on some sessions that were ... Read more in Amazon's Natalie Cole Store

I still say that Everlasting is Natalie Cole's best album.
Preston
This cd will take you back to the 1980s as you hear drums machines and guitar riffs on those tracks.
CLC
She released gold/platinum albums in a row and enjoyed several pop/R&B crossover hits.

I still say that Everlasting is Natalie Cole's best album. It shows her at her highest form long before the Unforgettable mega success and multiple Grammys. I still like the aggressive Jump Start. For starters, it could summarize what she had gone through in her hiatus, what with the substance problems she had before, just a jump start on her life back in 1987. Other songs I like are The Urge to Merge, In My Reality, Split Decision and I'm the One, I Live For Your Love as well as her reading of When I Fall in Love. I still love her version of Pink Cadillac, though they made a remix of it in 1988 that should have been on the album. But this is a very superb album with an emphasis on a live band on most of the songs. I have played this album the most out of Natalie's albums. Her finest and best collection to date!

I was introduced to this album when I was about 12 or so....I've been looking for it for such a while now...It's my favorite by N.C. The track that brings back such fond memories is "When I Fall In Love"....OMG....The version on the Stardust album is NO MATCH for this song.....

This album does have a nice mix of songs. This is definately classic Natalie. My favorites are mostly the hits (Jump Start, I Live For Your Love, & Pink Cadillac). But my very favorite is "Jump Start". It is one of the catchiest and best R&B songs that you will probably ever hear! And it has this groove that is undeniable. The song is like 14-15 years old, and has dated only the tiniest bit. "I Live For Your Love" is a powerful ballad, and "Pink Cadillac" was the big hit off of here. These songs are songs that you listen to on a nice spring or summer afternoon. The other songs on here dont live up to the standards of the three main songs, but are good anyway. If you are looking for one of Natalies best albums, this ranks up there with "Unforgettable"!!!

In 1987, Natalie Cole was signed to Manhattan Records (a subsidiary of Capitol, her first "home" label) after two commercially disappointing records ("I'm Ready" on Epic/CBS in 1983 and "Dangerous" on Modern/Atlantic in 1985).

Although the latter DID produce a #1 Club Hit in its title cut, it still wasn't enough to propel her back into the Top 40, however with "Everlasting," she rebounded in a BIG way and gave her career a "Jump Start" with a tight, funky-ass song that brought her to #2 on the American R&B chart.

After "Jump Start" is when the gold REALLY began to present with the romantic, "I Live for Your Love" and a perky RE-reading of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac." Additionally, there is a nice mix of both uptempo and downtempo selections including, the very AC-friendly, "Split Decision" and the sexy and slinky, "The Urge to Merge."

Truly, with this outing, Cole proved just how everlasting she really WAS and after another MONSTER hit single ("Miss You Like Crazy") and album two years later ("Good To Be Back"), it was clear that she was well on her way to redeeming herself as well as her lagging career which had both fallen prey to the curse of drug addiction which had consumed her since long before her debut in 1975. This album is an important milestone in the career of the woman who really IS "unforgettable."

A friend lent me the CD to listen to several years ago. I really enjoyed the fast songs, but one song, "More Than The Stars" really caught my ear. So much so, in fact, that it was the song that my wife and I requested for our "first dance" at our wedding reception. It was nice. :-)

Everlasting reminds the listener of the power and range Natalie showed on her first album. From the modern day groove of 'Jump start', to the slow tempo of 'When I Fall in Love', she sells each song as if it were her last. This CD is a most have for any true Natalie Cole fan.
