5.0 out of 5 stars An Everlasting Piece
This is definitely one of my favorite movies! I saw it when it was released at the Virginia Film Festival this past Fall & I LOVED it! We got to hear the writer, Barry, talk about starring in his own movie & the filming process - he's such a cool guy & I hope he gets some great deals after this first, fabulous, performance! 3.0 out of 5 stars a poignant depiction
The cover of this movie is misleading, as it shows a globe covered with a hair piece. The story is a bit more local than this. It is set right in the middle of a volatile northern Ireland. But the hair piece is fairly indicative of the movie's geist. The characters and the story are original and memorable. Some of the plot twists and dialogue are downright hilarious. But...

The most incredible part about this film was the setting of Northern Ireland. My family had two Irish children stay with us one summer & they talked about living in such an intense atmosphere. This film made that tension apparent - but all the while there was a very comedic, human side that came alive & was truly endearing! I just can't say enough positive things about "An Everlasting Piece". I loved it & I really hope this movie is a success!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead on!, November 25, 2003
By
This review is from: An Everlasting Piece (DVD)
Having spent quite some time over the past 25 years or so visiting friends and relations in Northern Ireland, my reactions to films that deal with the place run along a continuum of "Dead Awful-Dead On." This film takes a silly little idea and winds it up into a metaphor for all those people who attempted to carry on with their lives, surrounded by and in spite of The Troubles. It's loaded with inside jokes that those who attempt to bridge the divide will recognize and respond to immediately. I absolutely love this film, which tells us more about the people of Northern Ireland than all the useless politicians combined. Besides, this is one very funny film. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good piece., February 1, 2001

Over all I thought it was an entertaining and enjoyable film. Very well written. Hats of to McEvoy. I did how ever feel the film lacked a little in the direction. In my humble opinon I feel the film ran a little slow. And it would have been nice to see Dreamworks put a little of it's impressive movie muscle behind this small flick. A good view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and funny, January 28, 2001
By A Customer
Even if I weren't obsessed with Northern Irish politics, I still would have enjoyed this movie. It's very human and sweet and cleverly written. I can't wait to buy it for myself. My ridiulous knowledge of N. Ireland helped me to get some jokes that others won't, but no worries, it's funny even if you know nothing about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.. captured northern irish humour to a tee!, October 15, 2005

being from northern ireland and understanding the impact of the troubles and sectarianism i found this lighthearted comedy a great movie to watch and i laughed the whole way through. the belfast dialect means that some people who dont understand would be left out in the dark, some of the terms used might not be understood to some while to others it will piece the whole movie together. The movie shows how the majority of people from here can take the mick out of the situation, and how even though a it can be serious situation we still keep our humours intact. Typical funny dark northern irish humour the whole way through.. Fantastic film even if ur not from NI, but even better if you are!

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming!, March 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Everlasting Piece [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I stumbled on this video at the library and checked it out simply because I was attracted to the picture of a wig sitting on the earth. I'm so glad I did. An Everlasting Piece skillfully weaves the conflict in Northern Ireland with the story of two friends who set out to run a hair piece business. Although a few scenes are a bit pointless and seem to have been added simply to make Colm's family appear eccentric--the mother with the knickers on her head, the naked boy on the couch--these scenes are so charming that you forgive their irrelevance. As an Irish American, I found the scenes that focused on the troubles to be particularly poignant. I highly recommend this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars War and Piece, February 19, 2004

This review is from: An Everlasting Piece (DVD)
This movie is much more than a funny story about selling hairpieces. It's also about the difficulty of maintaining a friendship when you are on opposite sides of a conflict. Just living in the middle of the situation is struggle enough, but trying to rise above it is a life changing enterprise. Funny, sad, endearing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny movie about hairpieces, not herpes., August 8, 2003

This review is from: An Everlasting Piece (DVD)
An Everlasting Piece is a great Irish comedy about two men living in Northern Ireland. One is a Protestant and the other a Catholic. They start out as barbers at a prison, and quickly learn that the man who used to have the monopoly on hairpieces in Northern Ireland is in jail there, after having gone nuts and scalped a number of people. I'd rather not give away the rest of the movie, but it is extremely enjoyable, and has great humor. If you're not used to hearing people from Ireland speak, it may be a little difficult to understand. I recommend this movie if you enjoyed "Saving Grace" and "Waking Ned Divine."

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely magnificent movie!, January 27, 2002
By
This review is from: Everlasting Piece [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I rented this almost by accident, simply choosing it at my local store because it looked cute. I was simply wiped out. The subject matter, the portayals, the depth and breadth of this movie, along with the soundtrack, just knocked me out. Being Irish American, this movie touched me in ways that very few movies ever do, and I was dumbfounded as to why it wasn't trumpeted as a major accomplishment when it was released. This has instantly become one of my favorite movies of all time, and to anyone that loves a sweet, smart comedy or a deeply touching study of friendship and loyalty, and ESPECIALLY anyone who has any interest in the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland, I tell you this: You MUST own this movie. And tell all of your friends as well. This is a precise shining gem of a movie, do not miss it. I truly love this movie, could you tell? Trust me on this, get it. Slan go foill!

5.0 out of 5 stars too good to miss, August 14, 2001
This review is from: An Everlasting Piece (DVD)
Such a shame that Dreamworks didn't back this movie all the way ! It seems that most poeple missed the opportunity to see the movie in theatres. Now you can see it on DVD and video. A very special, funny, very well written film which shows Belfast city at it's best. Also an extra bonus to see Billy Connelly perform !!
