3.0 out of 5 stars Senna is not in this book
Senna is not in this book.

Everworld - Senna Wales = Fail.

Aside from three or four mentions throughout the book, Senna does not appear at all. Apparently, she's busy in some other part of Everworld up to something else, which we don't hear about.(Too bad. I was really interested in figuring out what her next move was going to be after the end of...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Fantastic Everworld Read, March 13, 2000
K.A. Applegate really hit a winning idea with the Everworld concept. She's found a way to bring the joys of sci fi and fantasy to the teenagers of America in a way they really understand and enjoy. Every one of these books is a thrilling adventure further into Everworld and the lives of those experiencing it. Tough issues most authors avoid are clearly discussed. Racism and bigotry are clearly addressed as Christopher faces his fears and discovers things he never dared face about himself before. An absolutely fantastic book. I can't wait to read the 7th in the series when it comes out in May. Thanks Ms. Applegate for giving the teens of America something reading to really enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, April 5, 2000
Applegate hit it off with Everworld. The characters are well rounded in an ever changing realm. I love the concept of going from EverWorld to the mundane world and how Applegate includes the popular bands and trends. I also appreciate how Applegate has made April a vegetarian, since I can identify and I know that others may copy this character. The only thing I dislike, is that these books are too short. This is coming from a 21 year old law student. ~~age knows no boundaries when it comes to good tales~~

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Everworld book..., May 9, 2001
By
"Fear the Fantastic" is the sixth book in KA Applegate's Everworld saga. Following their escape from the Fairy Land and possible incineration by the Nidhoggr dragon, Christopher, David, Jalil and April find themselves in Hetwan country. Here they encounter Dionysus and Ganymede, two gods who have been condemned to death by Ka Anor. In a forest surrounded by Hetwan, their only choice is to help the gods escape and join them on their journey to Olympus. But first they must pass through the city of Ka Anor.

This was the second Everworld book I have read so far. The story is fast paced and keeps you reading right until the end. The descriptions are amazing and Christopher's narration adds plenty of humour. I think that overall I preferred my previous one, #8 Brave the Betrayal, because the descriptions of Africa were so vivid. I thought Fear the Fantastic stood on its own less well and was harder to read if you knew little of the story background and character history. The fact that the plot can be quite hard to understand when you haven't read the earlier books in the series is my only fault with this. Apart from that, this is young adult fantasy at its best. I would recommend "Fear the Fantastic" to all fans of KA Applegate and will definitely by buying more titles in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK IF YOU LIKE ANIMORPHS, March 24, 2002
This is a great book if you liked Animorphs. When Applegate decided to stop Animorphs I was bummed but then she made Everworld. This was the first book I've bought and I didn't think it would be that good but it is!! If Amazon had ten stars for this review I would give it an eleven!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars So THIS is where K.A. Applegate has been hiding!, April 24, 2000

My daughter is a big fan of the Animorphs series, but quite franky, that series has faded into a shadow of its former self. Now I know why. Applegate's energy and imagination is fully evident in the Everworld series. A treat and a brief vacation from reality for readers of ANY age group!

I think the Everworld series is thrilling and a good read though it is not particularly good literature. I think the idea of a different universe in that context is origional but is hard to beleive. I always look forwards to a new Everworld coming up but I am not sure why.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slightly Less than Fantastic., December 9, 2010
By
Rebekah Montgomery (Mesa, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
I picked up this one from the used bookshelf because I hadn't read any in the series and I'm trying to take a look at as much teen/ya fic as possible right now. I flipped through it and thought the sarcastic, quick witted writing style was fabulous and brought it home.

Granted, there are 5 books in the series before this one and I'm literally jumping in the middle but this was a hard one for me to finish.

The whole experience felt like this: Make some snarky, wise-assed comments, run from the alien bug race, fall asleep so you can work in a copy store in the real world, run from the alien bug race. More snarkiness. More running. Even more running. Meet some Olympian gods. Kill a few alien bugs. Run some more. A couple twists. Keep running. Arrive safe at Olympus.

The pacing seemed really off somehow. You never really had a spot to catch your breath, let it sink in. Get to know the environment. Decide to enjoy it or not.

Most of the characters were so under-developed that I wanted to scream. I think one of the group of four teenagers might have had one line in the entire book. And this is book six? There is no relationship between these people yet? Other than pure survival. I didn't get the feeling a single one of them would risk their lives for any of the others. And not just because they were know-it-all, too cool teens....but because they didn't have it in them to care. They weren't written that way.

The fact that the narrator even mentions near the end of the book that he has no idea what is going on between some of the other characters. Hmm. Six books full of running and fighting with these guys and it never came up? Never thought to have a real conversation with any of them.

The book just tries so hard to be cool that it falls flat. Nothing really surprised me, and I had a hard time investing in the characters and whether the damn alien bugs got them or not. The aliens don't speak so they don't really come across as characters in the books as much as weapons. A flying mass of apathetic weapons...who seem to be chasing our group because they are aliens and that's just what aliens do. Well that and the Applegate seemed in need of a continuing catalyst and maybe just thought this would do.

Maybe I'm biased. I'm an adult female and the books are probably aimed much more at 14 year old boys. But I have to think that even 14 year old boys need something more from their fiction than cool alien bugs and lots of running away!

The end of the book was it's only saving grace. Here, finally our main character gets to deal with some real emotion. Guilt and regret and pain and we see him as three dimensional for the first time. I was sad we didn't get to see some of that dimension earlier on and with more of the characters that just seem to be superfluous.

It's possible that set-up will carry through to the next book. That we'll jump right in with a pained, developed character. But it's going to take some heavy convincing to get me to go for book #7 as a read.
