Book Description

October 1, 2001
In this exceptional devotional, James Calvin Schaap inspires high school students to examine their relationship to God and grow in their faith and understanding of Scripture. This gifted storyteller reflects on identity in Christ, sin, salvation, grace, and service as he draws fresh, personal meaning for everyday life from catechism phrases and childhood lessons. A highly respected author, English professor at Dordt College, and speaker for teen audiences, Schaap has a passion for young people. The book's 250 short readings convey that passion and speak to teens in their own language. With stories, anecdotes, and personal examples, Schaap helps readers understand that every bit of who they are hinges on God and their response to him. Teens will find these meditations readable and challenging. Pastors, youth leaders, and parents will recognize Every Bit of Who I Am as a great gift idea for young people.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 & Up--The only thing slick about this volume is the cover art: there are two beautiful teens gazing off into spiritual longing with their best deep, dark, sad-eyed "gee mom why can't I have a motorcycle?" stares. But inside, everything is plain and simple. There is one meditation per page (238 in all). Each one begins with a Bible quote and a catechism phrase and ends with a brief prayer. The devotions are clearly written and easy to follow. Teens involved with retreat programs and Christian prayer groups will no doubt find some of them useful. Put them alongside the "Chicken Soup" books (Health Communications) as spiritual comfort food. However, unlike the devotions/meditations of Thomas Merton, Catherine Doherty, or Henri Nouwen, or even the spiritual poetry of the late Jane Kenyon, these selections don't challenge readers. Nonetheless, like comfort food, they go down easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a devotional my kids will read!, November 14, 2002
By A Customer
My kids loved this book! The devotions were just the right length to hold their attention; and they both said that they enjoyed the stories and examples that Schaap used because he referenced TV shows, movies, and situations that they could relate to.

I loved this book because it challenged my children to think about where their spiritual journey is headed and helped them to think about what they believe.
