5.0 out of 5 stars A montage of happiness, love, heartbreak, and resilience February 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
"Every Child is Entitled to Innocence" is a group of brief stories, from Dr. Niamh Clune and her colleagues creating a beautiful blend of youthful experiences from various directions. It's a celebration of what's great about childhood, the discovery of love and friendship, and a reminder of the difficulties about childhood, the discovery of fear and hardship. This book will make you smile and tear up at the same time because people came forward to share their experiences in hopes to help children with the proceeds in the future. Five stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Agony and Art of Succeeding February 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The anthology, Every Child is Entitled to Innocence, is at once by and for children. These authors were asked to re- visit a place called ' a-long-time-ago' which lives (always) in our deepest level of consciouness - bidden or not bidden, it is there. The visit, brief but borne of the surrender of will - found people and events all wanting to be chosen. "You laughed, remember? Pick me.", "This was the ugliest discovery of your life. Dare you to take me?", "With gifts like this, you turned yourself into a winner. They'll love it.", "Nobody knows - and you vowed never to tell - but this is the horror curtain that closed permanently on the 'most insidious and painful show on earth. What say you show some guts and 'open' again?"
The choices were made. Each writer grabbed the lucky 'contestant' and hit the keyboard to meet a deadline. Some outcomes were products of dabbling too dangerously with the organ of dirges. Others, a 'Scott Joplin-like' version of 'tinkling on the ivories.' All coalesced with honesty and dignity to walk hand in hand across the pages of this book - "good to the last drop". And some children were finally free; others serve as a 'how to' for little eyes and ears the world over. If you go to somewhere while learning about the roads to nowhere then you will have truly experienced this book. You will also be on the 'success train'. Enjoy the ride. The price was right. And, if you think of it, pass it on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this amazing story collection February 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've just dipped in to this amazing collection and am so impressed. It is not to be missed!

Of course, I had to start with the exquisite piece by my friend, Karen Elliott, who in a few paragraphs captured the anxiety and heartache of families whose fathers work in the mines and children who are forced, by economic necessity, to work there too. She managed to convey powerful images and emotions without being in the least cloying or maudlin.

This was balanced by the first joyful story in the book which captured a child's sights (snow and the arriving car filled with relatives), sounds (joyful cries of greeting, mothers talking in the kitchen, carols playing on the record player), smells (the dinner cooking, the fir tree), and emotions (high of anticipation and low after all the gifts are unwrapped) of a family's Christmas worthy of Norman Rockwell.

Don't skip over the introduction, which is a compelling, educational call-to-action on behalf of children everywhere who are abused physically, spiritually, or economically.

Not only does this book shine a spotlight on an important societal issue, but it also introduced me to some remarkably talented authors. Kudos to everyone involved in this amazing project.

When Dr. Niamh Clune invited me to write a childhood story for this inspiring book, I wrote a happy memory about one of my brother's birthdays when we were children back in Ohio. Other writers that I know from various Social Media sites were also presenting their stories. I know these online friends as well-adjusted, productive adults, so never dreamed any of them had severely abusive childhoods and that their right to innocence was stolen by their "disturbed" parents or other family members.

It broke my heart to read these stories. It was bittersweet reading:

"Bitter" reading because of the physical and mental pain so many endured. Oh, it's shameful, the suffering and pain these innocents suffered...at a time in their lives when children are meant to be honored, nurtured and loved, a time that is meant to teach them to be caring, loving adults.

"Sweet" reading because these writers worked hard to overcome and eventually became "whole" and productive. These victories are the "meat" of this book! "Sweet" also because by sharing their stories, they are inspiring other people who have been or are still being abused. Another thing that's really sweet about this book is that all proceeds go to Child Helpline International, one of the most worthy causes in the world.

Of the twenty-eight stories in this book, a few writers had happy childhoods, like mine, and that helped break the tension. I'd like to thank these writers for boldly telling their stories to help others: Janet Young Beasley, Pandora Poikilos, LauraLMercurio, Katie Cullen, Harry Leslie Smith, J. B. Johnstone, Vickie Adair, Yousha Matin, Niamh Clune, C.C. Cole, Karen S.

I'm so honored to be one of the contributing authors in this wonderful book. Mine happened to be one of the happier entries, and the heart-touching experiences of many of the other authors simply proves that happiness can and should be generational . . . and it begins with each of us as parents. Thank you, Dr. Niamh Clune, for pouring your heart and soul into this amazing journey.
