Book Description

March 25, 1998
A world of potential resides within every child. If properly nurtured, this potential can blossom into something magnificent. In today's world, however, schools alone cannot give your child the tools necessary for success. To achieve excellence, your child needs your help. This book shows you how.

Every Child Is a Genius gives you the key to unlock your child's unique talents, insights, and interests. You'll be amazed at how much fun learning can be! More important, you and your child will delight in the meaningful progress you will achieve together.

You'll discover exciting ways to help your child:
• Learn math skills while playing board games
• Master the Internet on the home computer
• Develop a passion for reading
• Set up a chemistry class in the kitchen
• Play games that teach good teamwork
• Encourage responsibility
• And much, much more!

"This warm, practical, and well-organized book teaches parents how to weave good times and good learning into their children's lives, without relying on experts or money to do the job for them."

— Marguerite Kelly, author and columnist for Family Life magazine

"This book is a cornucopia of ideas for teaching and sharing — a gold mine of educational resources and suggestions for using them!"

— Helen Hegener, publisher of Home Education magazine

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This easy-to-read, homey guide on how to have low-cost fun with your kids is packed with creative ideas that should have parents thumbing through its chapters on a regular basis. Each of the short tips, grouped by age under topics such as reading, math, science, and computers, has an educational benefit--evidence of author Elise M. Griffith's background as a homeschooler. But this is a book written for all parents, not just those teaching their children at home full-time. Many of the activities may bring back childhood memories of planting seeds in egg cartons or casting handprints in flour plaster molds. Some are age-old and just plain commonsense. Practically every card and board game imaginable is listed. And while some tips are repetitive, many are clever. Griffith suggests, for example, showing kids how to write with "invisible" ink made of lemon juice, which magically appears when the paper is warmed in a 200-degree oven. The project turns into a science moment; parents can explain that the letters materialize because sugar in the juice carbonizes and turns brown from the heat. She also recommends turning on the closed captioning on your TV to encourage the Saturday cartoon crowd to read. And she provides hordes of homemade recipes for herbal soaps, sourdough starter, and soap bubbles, among other projects. Griffith writes in the beginning that she will consider the book successful if it becomes covered with food stains, its pages dog-eared. She will likely get her wish. --Jodi Mailander Farrell
