5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is definitely a must-read for anyone who is in ministry and wants to reach out to those in poverty. One of the other reviewers mentioned that the book doesn't have much in-depth information but I think that is what makes it such a great book. It is a quick read for someone who simply wants a better understanding of how to relate to those in poverty. It opened my...

2.0 out of 5 stars Ruby Payne's first book is better
This book is too simplistic and not as informative as Ms. Payne's 1990's amazing book entitled A Framework for Understanding Poverty which was directed toward educators. There isn't much additional helpful material here except for slanting the information toward middle class church member awareness of the generational poverty mindset in the U.S.

It opened my eyes to see the learned behaviors and the knowledge that I take for granted - things that I assumed everyone knew. For being such a short book it has made a HUGE impact on the way I see the world. I highly recommend it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book!, August 4, 2005
This review is from: What Every Church Member Should Know About Poverty (Paperback)
If you are a paid church worker or an active volunteer or a member of a church board, this is a must read book! It ranks right up there with A Purpose Driven Life & A Purpose Driven Church by Rick Warren, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey and Henry Blackaby's, Experiencing God.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for the Christian leader, March 25, 2008
I was reading this book up to the late hours. It began to shed some light on things the church needs to understand when dealing with people from different classes whether upper or lower classes. It is intesting to see what the Bible says about people who are ecomonically rich and those who are poor. I bought three more books for my fellow Christian co-workers so we can create a dialogue and deal with our inner perjudices. I am more aware.

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye opener for me, December 31, 2011

A friend recommended this book to me when I was speaking to her about prison ministry. She said that many in prison are from poverty background and unless I had some understanding of what they dealt with in their lives that I would have difficulty in relating to them. I can say the book has given me an insight that I had not understood. Although I attend a church where some poverty class persons attend, I understand better why they respond the way they do in the church. I am blessed to attend a church that we do not ignore those who live in poverty ... we speak to them, feed them, include them, etc, BUT I can see from this book that we as church, me as a person can do better! Easy, fast read gets to the nuts & bolts of the 3 social classes and one can see very quickly the difference with the charts shown in the book.

This review is from: What Every Church Member Should Know About Poverty (Paperback)
This book has been very helpful. The book is written to help church members relate to people of poverty, however, I believe it can be useful in relating to all other humans, including your own family members. Good information for everyone, not just church members.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable Tool, May 11, 2011

I work extensively through church and community volunteering with the impoverished. Middle class is my fit into the scheme. This book has been an enormous help as I and others strive to build bridges and bridge the gap of socioeconomics. I feel many friendships have been made and maintained due to my reading of this book. The bottom line is relationships--one at a time.

This is a cruicial guide for those in the church who are working with different economic backgrounds. It clearly articulated some of the things I have discovered in my work with those in poverty. The authors also gave reasons for the behavior which helps when behavior motification is helpful. The book also honored what is good and valuable about the culture of poverty and lessons which the middle class can learn from folks in poverty. It was an easy read with a nice mix of theory and practicality. One of the best continuing education pieces I have read in awhile.

This book will help those working to make their church a welcome place for newcomers. Much to learn about how people fit in, or fail to, in a new church. We will use the insights of this book to bring new members into our church, and to make sure that they feel welcome to join us in our work.
