About the Author

Rebecca Janni is a teacher and a cowgirl. She lives near Des Moines, Iowa.

Lynne Avril is a cowgirl, painter, and bass player. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

More About the Author

Rebecca Janni learned early on that biking was the best way to get around the neighborhood and reading was the best way to get around the world. On a bus ride home from school, Rebecca confided to a friend that she was working on a novel about a girl and her horse. She never finished the novel, but a horse of a different hoof shows up in Every Cowgirl Needs a Horse and Every Cowgirl Needs Dancing Boots, both published by Dutton Children's Books. Rebecca has two more picture books forthcoming and lots of other projects on her desk, including a middle grade novel without any horses. She has a master's degree in English education and has taught high school and college English and creative writing. Today, she divides her time between volunteering, adjunct teaching, and writing -- all of which take a back seat to motherhood! She lives in Iowa with her husband, four children, Greg the Gecko, and a big-hearted dog named Mickey. She loves to read and bike with her family, but not at the same time.

My girls are 3 and 5 and they absolutely love these books. They are very well written and are enjoyable for Momma as I read them before bedtime. The series of books are filled with wonderful teachable moments and resonate with little people. If you have girls, you need ALL of these book. We've started my little niece on these as well. Lots of love for Nellie Sue.

I checked this book out at our library for my 2-yr-old horse-lover. She REALLY enjoyed the story, however it was very odd to me that we don't learn the main character's name until 3/4 the way through the book! This was the only book of the series available at our library, so we had not read the earlier books. I believe an author should write each book both independently and as a series, keeping in mind that not every reader will have read the preceding books in a series.
