3.0 out of 5 stars Amusing, but trying to hard
I have enjoyed several of Cara Lockwood's books and usually like the "fantasy" chick-lit (witches, etc), so it was a "no-brainer" to buy this book. Unfortunately, it didn't really meet my expectations. There are definitely some funny elements, but overall, I wasn't blown away. There were a bit too many sub-plots and I did not feel like the romance between the lead...

Constance Plyd can't believe her husband, Jimmy, is dead. All she'd wanted him to do was sign the divorce papers but no, he put Tide in her dishwasher and then manages to get killed by a demon! Sheriff Nathan Garrett doesn't want to believe that Constance is responsible but she's the only witness to the murder. Is he letting his guilt over the past interfere with the investigation? Or is Constance's story true that a demon killed Jimmy and now the Devil intends to impregnate a ditzy virgin to bring about the birth of the Antichrist? Constance and Nathan will have their hands full as the situation is only going to get wackier....

Hilarious! Cara Lockwood had me laughing throughout EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY. From Jimmy's history of mishaps to the whole concept of a talking dog, the story is chock full of humor. Cara Lockwood keeps the tone upbeat, even as the world is crashing around Constance.

Constance is a great heroine. Her disbelief at the unbelievable events makes her all the more credible. I particularly love the distinguishing moniker of "Dead Jimmy" she uses for her now-deceased husband as it adds yet another bit of quirkiness to the tale. The romance between Constance and Nathan is sweet and builds over the course of the tale as both must learn to trust the other. EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY is a bit outrageous at times, but that is part of the fun. Easily recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars off-beat humorous yet action-packed thriller, April 11, 2009
This review is from: Every Demon Has His Day (Paperback)
Constance Plyd has been waiting for months to get her husband to sign the divorce papers; she believes this is the day she has prayed for. However, before that can happen, she finds Jimmy's dead body with a screwdriver protruding from his back. At the scene is the Pride demon Yeman who killed him. He gives her his card as he and Shadow the Gluton demon know she is the Chosen One as the prophet with visions that indicate who Lucifer is to have sex with in order to begat the Antichrist.

Sheriff Nathan Garret, who years ago had sex with Constance one day and left her the next, questions her. He finds her story unbelievable, which she can understand as so does Constance. In a vision she sees a small dog wearing a pink sweater who will help her. The canine Frank turns out to be an apprentice angel who belongs to movie star Dante London. The star is coming to town to film a movie. She is the vassal chosen to carry the Antichrist, but Frank and Constance wait for more of her visions to determine when and where the seduction will tale place so they can stop Lucifer from carrying out his plan.

Combining elements from urban fantasy, religion, and chick lit elements, Cara Lockwood creates an amusing lighthearted romp starring a non-believer who has visionary powers due to her matriarchal DNA. Constance always thought her mom Abigail was a fruitcake until she began to see the truth. It takes her a while to accept her skill, but once she does even Lucifer believes she is a force to be reckoned with. Readers will enjoy this off-beat humorous yet action-packed thriller as the strong cast knows that EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY even if it takes eternity for it to occur.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fun light hearted and off-beat easy read., August 4, 2010

Not hilarious, not even close, however, it has it's moments. But it wouldn't be fair for me to base my review on this one point as comedy is difficult for me. I just didn't read it as a comedy and I did enjoy the book. It's light hearted, fun, off-beat, different and good fantasy fiction. All qualities to my liking. Ms. Lockwood pens a mostly easy to read story as it moves smoothly from beginning to finish, however, the romantic liaison between the protagonists seemed somewhat lacking and awkward, as did the religion dialog in the last chapter. Truly 3 1/2 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wacky, But Worth It, January 12, 2012
Maybe I just have a wacky sense of humor, but I really enjoyed this. Yes, it gets goofy at times. It's vaguely reminiscent of the movie End of Days, but without that Republican who never bothers to learn English well. It's also a little bit like Men in Black, what with the talking lapdog and all. If you like Sookie Stackhouse, you're likely to enjoy Constance Plyd, visionary minor prophet. The good-versus-evil dramedy overwhelms the romance, and the sex is "off-camera," so this doesn't quite count as a paranormal romance. Still, it's entertaining. Once I got to the last 100 pages or so, I couldn't put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Dogwood Blues (Kindle Edition), March 27, 2011
By

"Every Demon Has His Day" is the first of Cara Lockwood's "Dogwood" series of chick-lit light supernatural romance comedies set in Dogwood, Texas. In this over-the-top PG-lampoon through demons, precognition, religion (catholicism) and the deep south, Lockwood's Constance Plyd is faced with the murder of her soon-to-be-divorced husband, Jimmy, the revelation that she is a prophet (minor), complete with precognitive visions, the reappearance of an old flame (whose parting was not on the best of terms) as the Sheriff of Dogwoood, a gun-toting cathpolic priest, demons and the Devil himself. Then things start to get interesting.

I read and reviewed the second entry (Cant' Teach a Old Demon New Tricks) first last year, and only just downloaded this first entry to my Kindle last week. The order of reading really doesn't matter all that much, but I guess it would have been (slightly( better if I had read this one first. Both are light-hearted, funny comedic romances eschewing any serious philosophical, religious or supernatural tropes. Lockwood can write, and write well, and this one, like the sequel, are fun for (most of the) entire family, including this 57 year old SF, horror and fantasy-loving husband and father.

5.0 out of 5 stars Books you have never heard about are often the best, October 16, 2010
When I bumped into this book at a Barnes and Noble while on vacation last year, something about that french bulldog in the fuzzy pink sweater caught my eye. So much so that I walked over to the book and knew that I NEEDED to read the back cover to find out what it was about. The short synopsis reminded me of the book "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaimon (a FANTASTIC book, might I add, and one that you should try). That was one point for the book already.
Unfortunately, for me at least, reading further, the book seemed to have the makings of a book written by a woman, for women. As a 21 year old male, that wasn't necessarily right up my alley. However, I remember having read (and thuroughly enjoyed) "One for the Money," The first Stephanie Plum novel written by Janet Evonavich, with my mother when she bought it, so I wasn't deterred enough to write the book off quite yet.
I left the book on the shelf, but when I bumped into it again the next day, I was swept up by a whim and I instantly purchased it before I could second guess myself. I am very glad that I made that decision.
Both of my original assessments were correct: it was similar to Good Omens and it was similar to the Stephanie Plum series. I won't say that it was quite as good as either book alone, BUT it is certainly the only book I can think of that somehow bridged the gap between them and was able to be equal parts of both.
It might be hard to find a demographic that this book really is made for, but if you're the right type of person, this sarcastic,Dark Comedy chick-lit is actually amazing, and I highly recomend it.

And for those of you who want a 3 word summary instead of a full review:

Good Omens + Stephanie Plum = Every Demon Has His Day

4.0 out of 5 stars I genuinely enjoyed this book, July 9, 2010
This novel was fun, funny and a really good time. Creative story with genuinely likable (and some dislikable) characters. If you're looking for something well written and a little silly, this is your book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, sarcastic, offbeat, dark humor, June 15, 2010
I'm reading these out of order but after reading Cara Lockwood's followup Can't Teach an Old Demon New Tricks I liked it so much I had to go back and read the first book in the series Every Demon Has His Day.

I'm not usually a fan of series fiction but this won me over. And even reading them out of order, the stories stand alone enough that the first book was just as enjoyable read second. As I compared in my review of Every Demon Has His Day, if you're a fan of Christopher Moore or Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman I think you'll find Cara Lockwood a good addition to the supernatural irreverent genre, writing about meddling and less than perfect angels and demons battling on earth.

Cara starts this off with Constance Plyd getting a divorce from her inept husband Jimmy. But when a Pride demon Yaman kills Jimmy to try to jumpstart Constance into the supernatural visions she's supposed to have to fulfill her role as a minor prophet "the chosen one" and let the Devil himself know who to hook up with and when to produce the next antichrist (the first antichrist was half goat - bet you can't guess how that happened), she's in over her head with angels and demons and also Prime Suspect in her husband's murder.

It's fast paced. You will laugh out loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every demon has his day, June 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I picked up this book, not knowing if I would like it or not. The book ending up being a can't put down type of story.

I truly loved reading this book, I laughed out loud so many times-
but it is not good book for people that don't enjoy lots of sex (I dont like it but I just skipped over
those parts).

it has a strong good vs evil storyline with a wild twist, I have ordered another book by this author.

I would recommend this book to my fellow readers, that like a wild adventure with suprising twists and turns with a
belly laugh along the way.
