5.0 out of 5 stars Learn About Some Opportunities For Your Dog, June 4, 2010

This review is from: Every Dog Has a Gift: True Stories of Dogs Who Bring Hope & Healing into Our Lives (Hardcover)
I recently had to put my cocker spaniel down. My oldest son was heartbroken so we went out to the Humaine Society and got ourselves a lovely beagle hound named Molly. We just adore her. Since then I have just been reading everything I can on dogs. I just finished Love Is The Best Medicine and would recommend that to anyone. This was the next book I picked up. This book is a easy reading book. Rachel Mcpherson is the founder and executuve dirctor of The Good Dog Foundation. She has put together a book full of stories detailing dogs and what they have to offer. Many different breeds offer different services and therapies to childern with autism, helping childern to read, promote healing in hospital settings, and are used as guide dogs. These stories are very inspirational for both the people and dog lover. These stories aren't fluffy at all, and really do a great job promoting the different services a owner might consider for their own dog as well. I was so encouraged by Pepper the dog that childern read to, that I am seriously considering getting my own dog into this training program. Whether you are just looking for a weekend read, or are seriously considering advanced training or wanting to serve your community this book is a A plus. Rachel does a great job giving dog owners tips and resources at the end of each chapter. Get this book and read it. Dogs have a wonderful way with people in need.

I totally and completely believe that dogs have healing powers. I saw it in the case of my father in law who passed away in May, 2010. He was in Hospice and had not responded to anyone or opened his eyes in days but when I brought Lucky to see him, whom he loved dearly, he started to move his hands and pet him. He also spoke a little and opened his eyes. I believe it was because of Lucky. He did this numerous times over the past several days afterwards. He was 89 and did soon pass but having him pet Lucky hopefully brought some joy into his last days. I know it did to his family.
I have 2 dogs and one on the way next week and I am ill. When I am down, these dogs pick me and sense it when I feel this way.
It's amazing the powers that lie beneath these furry creatures!!

I'm so grateful for this book. The stories are so touching...be sure to have a box of tissue next to you! I was also very appreciative of the resource section each chapter ended with, as I've been wanting to do more with my dog -possibly visiting patients and children - and I now know exactly what steps to take. Thank you for this lovely book!
