The Big Showdown(From Hank the Cowdog #10: Every Dog Has His Day)

It's roundup time on the ranch, but Hank's been left behind! Benny ? a hot shot, high-priced cowdog ? is running the show while Hank is tied to a fence post. After breaking his insulting restraint, Hank is heading to the corrals when he meets Drover and the lovely Miss Scamper.

"Well, hello there, you big hairy thing dragging a rope around." Miss Scamper said.

"You like that rope? I broke it just for you, just so I could come down here and feast my eyes on the roast beef of your face."

"You have a way with words. The only question is ? which way?"

She laughed. I laughed. We both laughed. I could tell she was impressed.

Drover barged into the conversation.

"Hank, there's cattle coming this way."

"Hush, Drover. Tell me, Miss Scamper, what can I do to convince you that my heart is in the right place?"

"Take it out and let me look at it."

"I beg your pardon?"

"Don't believe everything I say, big boy. It could get you into trouble."

"Oh, I see. You were joking? Ha ha, ho ho. You have a strange and delightful sense of humor, Miss Scamper."

"And it was subtle too, until you came along."

"Exactly. I don't know how you've managed all these years without me."

"It's been a real struggle."

"I can imagine! It might surprise you to know that I'm quite a humorist myself, Miss Scamper."

"You hide it very well."

"Yes, I've tried to disguise my humor behind a gruff facade, a French word meaning 'the front part of anything.'"

Her eyes widened in amazement.

"I didn't know you spoke French too."

"Oh yes. French, Thousand Island, Opengloppish, Pig Latin, Spanish, as well as several of the coyalect diotes...coyote dialects, that is."

Drover was beginning to hop up and down.

"Hank, something's going on, the cattle are coming this way, and here comes that new cowdog."

I peered out into the pasture. Sure enough, Benny the So-called Cowdog, was padding toward us. I squared my shoulders and waited. Some ten feet away, he stopped and glanced around.

"And so, Benny, we meet again," I said in one of my smoother tones of voice. "I'm not sure this ranch is both enough for big of us."

"Do you suppose you fellows could move out of the way?" he said. "We're trying to bring in cattle. Aren't you supposed to be tied?"

"Yes, I was tied. Yes, I broke the rope. No, we're not moving out of the way. And no, you're not bringing in any cattle without my permission. Any more questions?"

"Just one. Are you completely out of your mind?"

At that very moment, and for reasons which I didn't understand, Miss Scamper nodded her head.

"Because this is a roundup, you see, and we have work to do and you really don't fit into the overall dynamics." "That's where you're wrong, Benny. I've let this thing go far enough, and now I'm fixing to shut 'er down. The fact of the matter is that YOU don't fit into the overall hydraulics."

"Uh, dynamics, I think is the word you wanted."

"I said what I meant, Benny, and I'm afraid the old trick of putting words into my mouth won't work this time."

He shook his head.

"Good heavens, I thought I'd seen it all."

"No, as a matter of fact, you've only seen the beginning. Now pack your bags and get off my ranch."

He gave me a smirk.

"You obviously don't understand what you're saying, so I'll not argue. We WILL bring in the cattle, your opinions on the matter notwithstanding."

I took two steps toward him.

"Benny, old buddy, let me tell you something. I'll be withstanding in the gate when you start those cattle this way, and I'll see to it that you're exposed for what you are ? an impostor and a fraud."

"Well, it appears there's nothing more to be said."

"Exactly. Bring on the cattle. We'll see who's the cowdog around here."

Will Hank bring in the cattle and take back his rightful place as Head of Ranch Security? Find out in Hank the Cowdog #10: Every Dog Has His Day (Copyright ? John R. Erickson).

More About the Author

John R. Erickson, a former cowboy and ranch manager, is gifted with a storyteller's knack for spinning a yarn. Through the eyes of Hank the Cowdog, a smelly, smart-aleck Head of Ranch Security, Erickson gives readers a glimpse of daily life on a ranch in the West Texas Panhandle. This series of books and tapes is in school libraries across the country, has sold more than 7.6 million copies, is a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, and is the winner of the 1993 Audie for Outstanding Children's Series from the Audio Publisher's Association. Publishers Weekly calls Hank a "grassroots publishing phenomena," and USA Today says this is "the best family entertainment in years."

The road to stardom for Hank, however, wasn't all dog biscuits and gravy. Erickson graduated from the University of Texas in 1966 and studied for two years at Harvard Divinity School. He began to publish short stories in 1967 while working full-time as a cowboy, farmhand, and ranch manager in Texas and Oklahoma. Hank and his sidekick Drover are dogs Erickson worked with on the range. This mixture of true-life experience, fun, and adventure has gained Hank a loyal following of thousands of children and adults.

In 1982, however, Erickson was at his rope's end. "I was working out in the cold; there was 8 inches of snow on the ground," he says, "I had just gotten a couple of rejection slips from New York publishers, and I had a wife with two kids and another one on the way." So, with $2,000 in borrowed money, Erickson started his own publishing company, appropriately named Maverick Books.

Hank the Cowdog made his debut in the pages of The Cattleman, a magazine for adults. An obvious favorite of readers, Erickson included two of Hank's humorous stories in Maverick Book's first publishing effort, The Devil in Texas (1982). Erickson began selling books from his pickup truck at cattle auctions, rodeos, and just about any place cowboys gathered.

When Erickson started getting "Dear Hank" letters, he knew he was onto something. So in 1983, he self-published 2,000 copies of The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog, and they sold out in 6 weeks. Not long after that first printing, the book was recorded word-for-word on audiotape. Since then, every Hank book has been recorded, making Hank the longest-running successful children's series on audio, ever. (Source: Billboard)

When teachers began inviting Erickson to their schools, Hank found his most eager fans. Teachers, librarians, and students alike love Hank. According to some Texas Library Association surveys, the Hank the Cowdog books are the most popular selections in many libraries' children's sections. The lively characters make excellent material for reading and writing lessons, and turn even the most reluctant readers into avid Hank-fans. When used with the books, Hank tapes increase reading skills rapidly. And, in response to popular demand from the growing bilingual market, the first two Hank the Cowdog adventures are available in Spanish.

Although the Hank books began as a regional phenomenon, CBS Television heard about them and brought out a thirty-minute cartoon of the first book. It aired in May 1985 as part of a series called "CBS Storybreak."

Erickson has also written several books for young adults, the "Riley McDaniels Series". The first book of the series, "Moonshiner's Gold", won the 2003-2004 Lamplighter Award. The second book in the series, "Discovery at Flint Springs," was a finalist for the Lamplighter Award the following year. He has also written several books about cowboying based on his own experiences.

Erickson was born in Midland, Texas, but by the age of 3, he had moved with his family to Perryton, Texas, where he and his wife live today on their working cattle ranch. They have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren. His advice to young writers is, "Write about something you know. Try to leave your readers better off than they were before."

This is a great and heartwarming addition to the "Hank the Cowdog" series. Along with tons of hillarious gags, this is one of Hank's best!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hank The Cowdog Every Dog Has His Day, October 29, 2011
This review is from: Every Dog Has His Day (Hank the Cowdog #10) (Paperback)
The beggining of the story is about Hank doing patrol and he saw three pickups. Then there were two dogs Benny and Miss Scamper. But Hank was roped by a man who got the wrong dog.The rope broke when Hank tried to get Pete the cat. Then he tries to turn the cattle away which he was sucessful but when he entered the jungle the coyote brothers caught him. They made Hank to do the contest who can eat him or not. But turns out that Hank wins by his sleeping song with the help of a buzzard named Junior. So Hank tries to look for Loper but he is stuck in the quicksand but Hank rescued him by his rope. The end is when Hank and Drover went to sleep. The interesting part of the story is when the buzzards came and Drover is silly and the coyote brothers do a contest with Hank. I enjoyed the story because of the new characters.

I love all the Hank books, and this is a great one for the Christmas season. These books are hilarious and more important to the young reader, fun to read. I'd also check the rest of the series.
