Book Description

April 1995
A manual full of practical solutions, this volume shows that raising sensible youngsters is a difficult task, but that it can be done. It will wake you, shake you, push you, and teach you to raise responsible and competent children. The natural companion to Bennett's Book of Virtues, this book shows you how to do it.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Psychiatrist Bar-Levav blames society's growing violence and lack of civility and the troubled lives of today's youth (e.g., child suicides, teen pregnancies) on the lack of fathering, or authority-not authoritarianism-in families. He offers insightful analyses of real-life situations and then provides clear and helpful guidelines for achieving successful fathering. He does so in terms of the theory captured in the title, namely, that there is but one authority in the family: the father. Admitting that some women may be better at "fathering" and some men at "mothering," Bar-Levav (Thinking in the Shadow of Feelings, LJ 7/88) argues that biology intends men to father and be the authority. He is thus not supportive of nurturing fathers. Although colored by this questionable theory, the book is well written, and many patrons who agree with Bar-Levav will find it helpful. For popular parenting collections.

This review is from: Every Family Needs a C.E.O.: What Mothers and Fathers Can Do About Our Deteriorating Families and Values (Hardcover)
This book reads simply, but seeps its way into the heart and mind through stories of real people struggling with "fathering." While "fathering" may seem a familiar concept, it is here clearly laid as out set of responsibilities not confined to the male gender. It is about training a child toward civility, realistically and firmly. In our culture, which these days is purposefully dis-oriented by the overuse of emotion and sensationalism, this book presents a welcome formula that anyone, even a bright child, can understand and gain from. Civilized living may depend on the likes of this book.
