Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Brown follows his autobiographical Clumsy (2003), Unlikely (2003), and AEIOU (2005), which recount a series of disastrous relationships, with a day-by-day chronicle of his interactions with five girls (his word) over the course of three weeks. The most unsettling is troubled free-spirit Allisyn, Brown's first romance (the subject of Clumsy), who re-insinuates herself into his life. The sweetest is Stephanie, who works at the coffeehouse he hangs out at; he is willfully oblivious to her crush on him. Visiting pen-pal Lisa and former roommate Thu have little more than cameos here. Unlike the dramatic, relationship-altering events that shaped Brown's other stories, small moments make up Every Girl, and the rhythms of Brown's everyday life--day job, drawing sessions, video viewing, partygoing, all depicted in his disarmingly shaky drawing style--enhance the aura of the quotidian. If Brown's coterie of sympathetic fans will be relieved at the absence of dudgeon and drama, they're likely also to wish, a bit guiltily, for a little frisson-gendering angst to jack up the energy level. More About the Author

After growing up in Michigan, a 25-year-old Jeffrey Brown moved to Chicago in 2000 to pursue an MFA at the School of the Art Institute. By the time he completed his studies, he had abandoned painting and started drawing comics seriously. His first self-published book, Clumsy, appeared seemingly out of nowhere to grab attention from both cartoonists and comics fans. Established as an overly sensitive chronicler of bittersweet adolescent romance and nonsense superhero parody, Brown's current direction remains split between more autobiography examining the minutiae of everyday life and whatever humorous fiction he feels in the mood for. His most popular works include Clumsy, Unlikely, AEIOU, and Every Girl is the End of the World For Me, comprising the so-called "Girlfriend Trilogy" and its epilogue. More recently his autobiographical work has included Little Things and Funny Misshapen Body. His parody The Incredible Change-Bots, the Ignatz Award winning I am going to be small and humorous cat book Cat Getting Out Of A Bag all stand out amongst his humor work, while his Sulk series continues to take on a variety of subjects with satire. Jeffrey's work has appeared in a host of anthologies from McSweeney's to The Best American Comics, as well as mainstream books like The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror and Marvel's Strange Tales. His original artwork has been exhibited in New York, Paris, and Chicago. Brown has been featured on NPR's This American Life and even created a short animated music video for the band Death Cab For Cutie. He lives in Chicago with his wife and son.

4.0 out of 5 stars a little too true to life, May 11, 2007
This review is from: Every Girl Is The End Of The World For Me (Paperback)
Jeff Brown's "Every Girl Is the End of the World For Me" is not for everyone. The drawing style takes a little getting used to (their heads are so big!). If you're not in the mood to read about a twenty or thirty something musing, whining, and floundering around about sex and relationships, I'd avoid it. For those that can stomach it (or relate), it's probably one of the best observed, true to life stories about romantic indecision out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super, July 19, 2007
This review is from: Every Girl Is The End Of The World For Me (Paperback)
This was the first time I experienced Jeffrey Brown, and I am hooked! The illustration is adorable, yet each emotional nuance is captured almost perfectly. Brown truly reveals humor in the foibles of hetero relationships.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book was the end of my $8..., April 12, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Every Girl Is The End Of The World For Me (Paperback)
I was disappointed in this book to say the least. The author seemed like a really nice and witty guy on the Around Comics podcast. This may not have been one of his best books, but i won't find out. The story was bland and nothing happened outside of a lot of coughing by the main character....ok, i get it, he's sick. I wish i had gone ahead and spent the $8 on shipping and not tried to get the super saver shipping.
