If Only Columbia Records Gave Them Respect...,
By Chris Budzban (Luxemburg, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Every Given Moment (Audio CD)
You know, this band could really kick off if their record company, Columbia, would dish out the cash for them to be a huge star. I've seen them live 2 times, and have even met the lead vocalist Erik at a show here in Wisconsin. Awesome band, I loved their first CD, Perfect Self, and this CD did not dissapoint me one bit. They released "Breathing" as a single, and I think that there are plenty of other songs on the album that are much better. Songs like "Show Me", "Anything But Jesus", "Control Freak", and "Searching" are all kick ass and should be recognized by the listeners. This band has to be the best of the unknown rock bands out there on the scene today without a doubt. Killer.

Disappointing My Ass...,

Stereomud is the most underrated rock band ever. Their first cd was awesome and had a great grunge feel to it. With their 2nd cd they get a little more modernized and branch out w/ their lyrics. This cd is by no means a disappointing cd. 4.5/51. Show Me- 5/5: An awesome opener for the cd, crunchy guitars and Eric's emotional voice. 2. Anything But Jesus-4.5/5: Another well-crafted rock song. Really strong lyrics. 3. Breathing-5/5: I bought this cd after hearing this song, amazing single. Stereomud keeps it coming in heavy doses w/ this one. 4. Define This-4/5: A decent rocking track. The chorus is a bit slower paced than the verses, doesnt make it bad. Nice guitars though. 5. Control Freak-4.5/5: A really catchy and groovy song. The lyrics are good, Stereomud can write really great songs with breaks and build-ups. Theyre very underrated. 6. Drop Down- 5/5: The most aggressive track on the album. Awesome heavy cruching guitars with chugging bass following. Great singing. 7. Coming Home-4.5/5: A lot people dont like this song becuz it was written for his kids, but so was "Dont Be Afraid" from the 1st cd. A great song, whats cool about it is that the music doesnt let up. 8. Fallen-4/5:Another good song, doesnt stand out as much, but its nice. Swirling chorus and kinda creepyish backing vocals. Really nice though. 9. Yesterday-4.5/5: Stereomud continues with this good rock song. Its about the things that they learned from being together for so long. Its a good song, and people need to give it a chance. 10. My Addiction-4.5/5: A more atmospheric song which turns into a rocking song. Great musicanship, trademark vocals, everything about this band is great, really catchy. 11. Searching-5/5: I really enjoyed this song, Eric's vocal range is nice on this one. Once again awesome guitars and bass. Everything is good. Every Given Moment is a cool cd. I was really looking forward to its release, and I wasnt disappointed. Give it a chance if you want some good rock music.

THIS ALBUM ROCKS \m/,

There is obvious growth from Perfect Self to Every Given Moment. The melodies are more complicated, the lyrics are even more amazing, and they simply went for it all the way with the total sound. I love Perfect Self and always will, but Every Given Moment is a major step up.It kicks off immediately hard with Show Me, then going right into anythingbutjesus and Breathing, the second and first singles released, respectively. Then it takes a harder turn with Define This. If you have not seen this band live yet, and even more so, see them do THIS song live? Make sure you do! It will make your hair stand on end and want to jump around and make those neck muscles sore from headbanging. Next is Control Freak and the lyrics pretty much say it all. This is a favorite for many people who have heard and own this album. The following track, and probably the heaviest of all, is Drop Down. Wow. The first time I heard this live my mouth was literally hanging open. Every time I hear it, I am compelled to crank it LOUD. The composition and sound of this song is so interesting. And must be played LOUD. Did I say that already? PLAY IT LOUD! Coming Home comes next and it, along with the next track, Fallen, I just can't get them out of my head. I always find myself singing these out of the blue. Great lyrics, complicated melodies, incredibly engrossing musicianship. That is where the genius of this band lays. Their talent is undeniable. Yesterday follows and is another one I find myself playing in my head a lot. The final two, My Addiction and Searching make for a very strong finish for this rocking, well written, wholely original album. BUY THIS ALBUM, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

Incredible sophomore effort!,

I bought Stereomud's first CD back in 2001 and it had some solid songs but lacked consistency overall. Well their sophomore album came through in the clutch. All 11 songs are great. It's such a solid album...you can listen to it straight through. Especially on second listen, every song starts to grab you and draw you in. All of them are catchy and infective. They also achieve a great balance between hardness and melody. Awesome album boys! Worth every penny.

It won't change your life, but it'll entertain you for a week. ... A steal -- some good nu metal, the singing is amazing, the the bassist is very good. The album if quite short, hence "tight," no filler or soft moments here unlike the debut. I don't understand the artwork. Since the issue of Every Given Moment, i have probablylistened to it 11-12 times, and linkin park 1-2 times. My favorite song is #7, i think, but there are some other contenders.

Must have CD. Joey Z and Dan of Life of Agony (The best band ever) are in this band and bring the same kind of edge to stereomud. Along with Corey and Eric this band is...good!!

Better Than Most,

Quite the broad range of band mates. I've listened to the bands these guys used to be in: Stuck Mojo, Life of Agony (very good btw), and Pro Pain. And I have the first CD too. First time I heard the first one I was going to dimiss them as just another nu-metal band, but then I saw them live. I was impressed by how much the really loved what they were doing. It was refreshing. They new CD Every Given Moment basically picks up where Perfect Self left off. No change in styles from what I can tell off 2 quick listens. Heard some pretty good hooks in the new songs which makes it listenable. There is a melody hidden inside the heavy sound which I think helps with the listenablity of this band. Yeah some songs kinda blend together but each one has a life of its own unlike a lot of sophomore releases that are out right now. I think the strength of this album/band is the powerfull singing and the passion that you can hear in each and every song. I'm really not into this nu-metal/heavy rock so much anymore. I got fed up with it and went back to the independent music scene which will always be, in my opinion, where you will find the best music out there. At least with this band no one that I heard really sounds like them and they sure don't seem to steal/copy from other bands out there. You can hear influences obviously, but its mostly original. I haven't given a new band anything higher than 3 stars in a long time. But I guess I'm really digging this CD today so it got 4 stars out of me today. Hopefully there will be some better more original music hit the more main-stream audience here soon.

A band that wasn't given a chance,
This review is from: Every Given Moment (Audio CD)
Stereomud were a band that deserved more than what they got. A supergroup of sorts with Joey Z of Life of Agony on lead guitar, Dan Richardson of Pro-Pain (also a part of Life Agony for a brief while) on drums, Clint Lowery of Stuck Mojo on bass, and rounding out the rhythm guitarist and vocalist role respectively are John Fattoruso and Erik Rogers, this band was a tight unit. But despite from coming from different groups, Stereomud's collective sound did not follow any of them. The best way I can describe Stereomud's style is a mix of groovy 90's metal riffs with a bit of grunge thrown in and light and shade vocals (vocals that alternate between clean and aggressive).
A good number of reviewers have rated this album poorly in comparison to its predecessor, I honestly do not see why. Perfect Self is a good album but Every Given Moment I always choose to listen to first. The band seemed to really put more time and effort into their song writing on this album. Every song has its own identity and flavor that makes it stand out on its own while Perfect Self seemed to run together most of the time. There are more nuances here which increases the replay value, especially with the guitar riffs. Since I'm a guitarist, I really enjoy good riffs and Stereomud certainly delivers in that department. Joey Z can especially craft good hooks and his rhythm work is tight as a machine. I will admit that lyrically the band is nothing special. Mostly the typical angst the musical environment was jammed full of during the late 90's and early 00's but Erik Roger's vocal range and tone makes up for this. The album starts off strongly with "Show Me". Short but doesn't waste any time in assaulting your ears with its chunky rhythms underneath Erik's rapid and choppy shouts. Joey Z also gets to cut loose with one of his trademark screaming solos in the bridge. "Anything but Jesus" places more emphasis on groove, making a more slow tune. Despite the title, it is not an anti-christian song. It's simply Erik stating that no one can rely on him for every single thing. Bringing on the melody comes from "Breathing". Erik sings clean all the way through and a good amount of atmosphere is utilized. "Define This" can be best defined (Ha!) as knuckle-dragging. The main riff is dense, slow, and droning but is interspersed by an uplifting chorus that can be sung along with. Intricate riffing follows on "Control Freak", especially the mechanical sounding intro riff. The everlasting quiet-loud dynamic does make the song predictable but the sheer tone of the guitars make up for it. "Drop Down", easily the heaviest song this album has to offer, bursts with industrial energy and the vibe is so intoxicating, I always have a compulsion to replay it each time I hear it. Despite the somewhat juvenile anger, Erik's range and power are nothing to scoff at. His energy, along with Joey's surging riffs, with invigorate you to bang your head and shout along. Things become subdued on "Coming Home". Some industrial samples and keyboard experimentation is used here and the chorus soars sky high. "Fallen" delivers more industrial vibes, especially in the verse riffs and "Yesterday" surges with a lot of chromatic riffing during the chorus. Joey Z gets to wail a bit on the wah-wah pedal as well. "My Addiction" and closer "Searching" bring on a sort of Killing Joke-esque guitar and drum interplay, with the latter especially espousing this. The churning palm-muted chugs especially recall the Pandemonium era. Both well done and perfect for closing this opus. It's a shame Stereomud couldn't continue. Columbia did nothing to promote the band and coupled with a lot of competition media wise with other bands during 2003, the band didn't feel enough vigor to go forward. Joey Z also claimed there was disputes regarding the band's musical direction but I don't really see anything obvious in that respect when I listen to this. You never know what the future will bring but at this point, it seems Stereomud will remain dormant. However, this shouldn't stop anyone from listening to them. Check this one out wherever you may see it. You will regret missing out if you hadn't heard it before. The band may be no more but they left behind a legacy worth hearing.

The only other StereoMud CD I've listened to was "Perfect Self", and I bought this based on my appreciation for that CD. Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad release, but it just doesn't have the hooks to grip you like PS, which I would rate as a 4+ stars.
