5.0 out of 5 stars At last I understand technology
I've been working in computer R&D since the late 60's. I was jealous of friends who paid for their Silicon Valley houses using investments in Hi-Tech. The field just seemed too confusing and too volatile. Now it's like the gold rush of 1849 and even crazier. I found Murphy after a search of Amazon.com and what a great book! 1.0 out of 5 stars The author did very poorly for his own mutual funds!
I checked out the book from local library. It looks interesting. I flipped through the book and found out that the author manages two mutual funds: "Murphy New World Biotechnology Fund" (MNWBX) and "Murphy New World Technology Fund"(MNWTX).

I checked the funds performances. They are the bottom of the same fund category since the start of the funds...

5.0 out of 5 stars At last I understand technology, January 17, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
He explains the industry and it all fit together with what I knew from experience. A subscription to Murphy's California Technology Stock Letter resulted in a 97.9% increase in my portfolio for 1999 with half of it invested in index stocks. Note that none of the Hi-Tech picks were in internet stocks. (Murphy performs detailed fundamental analysis and believes in value. Only recently has he added any internet stocks.) Note that he concentrates on the Western USA since he insists on face to face discussions with the CEO before making a recommendation. Some complain that Murphy doesn't understand biotech - well his biotech picks are hot now. Others say look at his mutual funds - a fair complaint in 1998 but 1999 his technology fund was up 97%. So if you want to understand the Hi-Tech and Bio-Tech industries you have to read Murphy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! The New Economy and how to invest in it., February 2, 1999
This review is from: Every Investors Guide to High-Tech Stocks (Hardcover)
I have been working in the high tech field for 15 years and must admit I didn't do a great deal of investing in it. I feel so STUPID now, after reading Murphy's book. If only I had sat down and thought through some of the facts. So much of what he says I knew was true, but his genius is in what he does with the basic facts. I am convinced here lies great wealth. Growth flow and how it considers R&D spending is so simple, and like so many simple thoughts, very powerful. I hesitate to say too much, because in one sense I don't want to let the word out, but it already is. So my advice is to read it!

I can't say enough good things about this book. I have an MBA from a well recognized business school and this is simply the best book on investing I have ever read , and I've read a few. A must read for anyone who wants to be in charge of their investing destiny well into the next century.

Buy, borrow or relieve someone you know of this book!

Are the strategies proven winning strategies? I don't think so. Save your time and money. Otherwise, you'll only get some wrong ideas and even lose tons of money like the author did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mike Murphy is a genius, January 26, 2000
This book makes so much sense. Murphy points out the indicators that our society and economy are undergoing fundamental changes, as significant as the evolution from a hunter-gather society to agricultural; agricultural to industrial; industrial to commercial; and now it's commercial to informational/high-tech. Even if you weren't interested in his investing advice, this book would be worth reading for enjoyment, and to educate yourself about the developments that are going on in our society in technology and biotechnology. But once you read this book, you'll find yourself unable to resist taking Murphy's advice on investing. Who wouldn't want to do just what he says after he tells you the inside scoop (Wall Street is underestimating the potential because they're so far removed from where the action is) that is practically guaranteed to make you a lot of money (just look at the indicators around you!)? After reading it, I subscribed to his newsletter and check his web site daily (www.techinvestingonline.com), and I follow his advice. I've certainly joined the Mike Murphy cult, even though I recognize that his writing is a bit sensationalist...I can't not believe that what he's saying is true.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone thinking of buying high tech stocks, April 12, 1998
By A Customer
Murphy gives a very concise means of evaluating these difficult to value companies based primarily on their 12 month trailing EPS and past fiscal year expenditures on R&D, that one expense that will make or break a high technology company.

Anyone that is thinking of buying stocks of high tech companies should read this book to gain insight into the best means of placing a value on the company in question to know when the price is right for that company.

Traditional means of valuation are just not valid for these companies according to Murphy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but nothing new here!, August 5, 2000
I'm kind of scratching my head here, wondering if I read the same book as all the five star reviewers. I wanted a bit more of a discussion on risk, I wanted more on how the money he runs has been performing, and a bit more rigor on the decisions as to choose stocks.

However, I did like the opening chapter, and the discussion on convertible bonds for high-tech companies, even though both could have done with a little more "meat" also.

Good for the novice, but anyone with a bit more experience will be frustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simplifies the world of High Tech, March 14, 1998
By A Customer
Murphy gives us a glimpse into the future and teaches us why investing in tech stocks is different from investing in blue chips. Everyone should read this book. It provides tremendous insight into where these companies will be in 15 years. I think the advice offerred here will make anyone a lot of money

1.0 out of 5 stars save your money. check silicon investor for tales of loses, March 2, 1998
By A Customer
A summary of CTSL newsletters, the author's bimonthy newsletter published for approximately $250.00 per year. Book is available at some libraries free. Purchase book for novice investor. Although interesting, a book can be outdated quickly on technology. Buy book, but read other sources before purchasing tech stocks in book. Mr. Murphy is a well known writer and financial speaker at various money shows and has written a book that could be outdated quickly.Check web pages for losses incurred by more experienced tech investors. A thread on Silicon Investor is dedicated to CTSL and former subscribers. Read book, but buy on caution. In fact, get book on sale or from library. Check Boston Globe's and other investment site searches before investing money on recommendations. Author appears frequently at money and investment shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST book for picking the winners in high-tech stocks, November 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Every Investors Guide to High-Tech Stocks (Hardcover)
I read michael murphey's High-tech stocks & mutual funds (first eddition). It was a wonderful book about technology stocks. He has described what is high-tech stocks and how to pick the winners etc.. in detail and has provided good strategies. I think he (Mr.Murphy) has to review again his recommended stocks for blue-chips 2010 list. Some of them are not good for today. Anyhow I am waiting for his Second Edition eagerly...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great insights, August 31, 1998
By A Customer
This book is both well organized and complete for any novice investor wishing to gain industry "insights". Murphy's growth-flow model is a common sense way of comparing technology companies to one another. The explanation of the semiconductor-inventory cycle and the book-to-bill ratio are a must for anyone investing in semi stocks.
