As someone who appreciates well crafted musicianship from serious singer/songwriters, Ben Howard is now near the very top of my list along side David Gray, Nick Drake, Fink and the John Butler Trio. And you'll hear slight influences of all of them in this album. I can't remember the last time an album literally transported me into another realm.
"Hot sand on toes, cold sand in sleeping bags,
I've come to know that memories
Were the best things you ever had
The summer shone beat down on bony backs
So far from home where the ocean stood
Down dust and pine cone tracks"
You can smell the ocean air and feel the pine cones beneath your bare feet. I played this album in the background while I worked and found I couldn't concentrate on what I was doing, I kept drifting off to the ocean, the woods, teenage memories of camping out with friends who you would eventually lose touch with. It's simply an outstanding collection of songs.
It took me hours to get to the last track because I kept replaying the first three songs. This album will remain in my playlist for many months to come. And at only 23 years old, I can't even fathom how Ben's music will evolve in the coming years.
Buy two copies of this album and send one to that old friend you used to camp on the beach with, the one you lost touch with so long ago.

First heard Ben Howard from the show "House" and decided to check his music out. For 2 months now, I cannot stop listening to this album. His voice moves you along with the acoustic guitar. This is the perfect "chill" music. This guy deserves to be recognized and listened to. A couple of other songs you must listen to not on the album are "move like you want", "under the same sun", "depth over distance", "a hand to hold". Amazing.

I saw Ben Howard on Letterman and immediately had to get this album. He may be the next Paul Simon with a hint of Sting in the lyric writing.
To say his style is "folk" is somewhat of a misnomer, again it's more Simon & Garfunkel. His back up band is a fine bunch of musicians and singers
with great harmonics.

cannot believe this talent. ben was born 1988, he's a year younger than me, and has the voice and mind of someone who has experienced it all (and smoked a pack or two along the way) cannot wait for the bands' presence in NYC- i'm sending playlists to all of my friends

....like I did my Rubber Soul album when I was a teenager.
I love this music. Lyrics are wise and touching and Ben Howard's voice is wonderful. If you like Glen Hansard (Swell Season) and similar music, you will probably enjoy this.

Great chilled out acoustic CD
Some great sounds on this one - have been really enjoying the quality musicianship and fingerpicking. Cool voice and some great lyrics. Really growing on me.
