Book Description

January 2001
Every Day I Love You More (just not today) picks up where the fairy tale ending of And so, they lived happily ever after leaves off. With a refreshing mix of warmth and wit, Nancy Shulins guides couples past the honeymoon stage. The tone of the essays in this collection varies, much like the day-to-day mood in a marriage. Some of them are poignant, some hilarious, but all are drawn from real life. Each tale will focus on a different aspect of long-term love, and offers prescriptive suggestions for the reader. These lessons will teach couples how to love each other more every dayeven when every day starts tomorrow. With millions of marriages taking place every year and one in two of these ending in divorce, love that lasts is a goal for every couple. The affirmations and anecdotes in this book will help to keep couples going by reminding them what love is all about.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In prose that's alternately breezy and pointed, Shulins offers a collection of brief anecdotal essays on plucking out Cupid's slings and arrows and replenishing the spirit of a lifelong marriage. Many of her musings focus on keeping love alive by resuscitating old memories of falling in love. Others concern the little ways that couples ease daily friction, whether through mental exercises (such as imagining what would happen if spouses locked in a frustrating pattern were to reverse roles) or by judiciously doling out a little white lie when one's partner asks, "Do I look paunchy?" Shulins does not dwell on the difficult (she mentions her multiple miscarriages and decision not to adopt children without elaboration), and often edges into gender stereotypes and romantic clich?s in her effort to lightly poke fun at long-term lovers. Readers looking for substantial insights may find her advice trite and inadequate (e.g., she advises holding hands with one's spouse at the movies as a way to spice up a too-familiar sex life, and advises full-time working mothers who still do most of the housework to "get over it"), while those looking for a sweet-tempered celebration of marriage may recoil from apparent flashes of hostility that are sometimes barely concealed in the guise of humor. Still, less sentimental readers may appreciate this down-to-earth look at making a traditional marriage last. (Jan. 9)

More About the Author

Nancy Shulins was the first woman special correspondent in the more than 150-year history of The Associated Press. Her in-depth features for AP earned two Pulitzer Prize nominations and a Clarion award, and are included in numerous anthologies and textbooks. Shulins has taught writing and coached other writers at newspapers from coast to coast. She is the author of two books, Every Day I Love You More (Just Not Today), and Come to the Table. She lives in Norwalk, CT, with her husband, a consultant.

Eli was born a chestnut foal with a white star and one white sock on a Thoroughbred farm in upstate New York on April 17, 1990. The son of Dixieland Brass and Sois Sage, he was given the unfortunate name True Tone. As a yearling, he received a nasty kick to the right front knee and an early lesson in body language that never quite took. He went to the track to fulfill his destiny as a Native Dancer foal, but he was unhappy there so his breeder brought him home. His life was fairly uneventful until the fall of 1996, when he traveled to Oakwood Farm in Connecticut, delivered by two men whom he dragged across the indoor ring on their stomachs. Oakwood's trainer decided right then and there he was going back where he came from. Had her schedule allowed, that would've been the end of that. Instead, he hung around just long enough to get under my skin. And there he remains fifteen years later.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to remember-always, December 22, 2000
This review is from: Every Day I Love You More (Just Not Today) (Hardcover)
During the courtship, magic rules the universe. However, the morning after the marriage, reality often nukes the magic disappear. EVERY DAY I LOVE YOU MORE (JUST NOT TODAY) provides a series of essays so that the magic never vanishes, but instead reenergizes as a thriving loving partnership.

A happily ever after non-fiction work seems like a boring sure loser, but Nancy Shulins turns her material into an amusing, intelligent, and educational read that varies from story to story. Each of the essays is relatively small so that the reader can pick up and put down this self-help book as warranted. No essay is boring as they run the relationship gamut with the shared goal of "loving more today than yesterday, but not as much as tomorrow" instead of "where did all the flowes go"?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book to Keep and Pass Around, January 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Every Day I Love You More (Just Not Today) (Hardcover)
When I came across Nancy Shulins's book, Every Day I Love you More, I was on a retreat from marriage, hiding out for a couple of hours in a bookstore. I'm not a fan of "relationship" books, but something about this one attracted me. (I think it was the subtitle--Just Not Today.)When I sat down to read, I was hooked. Had to buy the book. When I was done, marriage no longer seemed like the worst idea anyone had ever had.

When I read her account of those days "when grotesque crimes of passion actually start to make sense," I was laughing and didn't stop. By the time I got to the part where her husband brings home bubble wrap as a gift, I began to realize that what I had been retreating from was not my partner but my sense of humor.

These essays are not all about the author's marriage. She seems to have corralled all her friends, somehow convincing them to reveal the saddest, happiest, and most absurd moments in their own marriages. I think she must be one of those rare women people love to tell their stories to, then delight to see the spin she has put on them in print. If she produces a sequel, I have a story or two to tell her.

How is this book different from others of its kind? It's way funnier, not at all smug, and far from authoritarian. I think that for her, marriage is something like a vaudeville act made up of flexibility, resilience, and a few pratfalls. As Nancy Shulins puts it, it's "a little song, a litle dance, a litle seltzer in your pants."

5.0 out of 5 stars "Let's hear more from Nancy Shulins", January 19, 2001

Ideally this book should be read one essay at a time, savoring each one and trying to apply it to one's own life. Instead I can't wait to get on to the next one. She's a very inciteful, observant young woman who obviously is a good student at observing human nature. I find myself in every essay, and sometimes just laugh out loud. I always marvel at these people who can take the ordinary little things that make up each of us and express them in the written word.
