Book Description

May 25, 2001 Tom Clancy Commanders
Tom Clancy is one of the world's biggest-selling novelists. In his new "Commanders" series, made authoritative through the collaboration of the very commanders through whose eyes these campaigns are seen, he is revealed as one of the world's most readable military historians. General Chuck Horner commanded the US and Allied air assets during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The right man in the right place at the right time, he combined a broad experience of all aspects of aerial warfare with a deep respect for and knowledge of Arab culture. Co-ordinating the forces of a dozen nations, he led one of the most devastating air campaigns in history. Never before has the Gulf air war and its planning - a process filled with controversy and stormy personalities - been revealed in such rich, provocative detail. Also a portrait of how war changed fundamentally in the last decade of this century, this is a real-life tale of speed, accuracy, efficiency, fresh strategy and initiative - as well smoke, fear, courage and blood...

About the Author

Tom Clancy is a household name. His books - including Patriot Games, The Hunt for Red October and Clear and Present Danger - have sold in their millions worldwide, and have been the basis of some of the biggest-name action movies. General Chuck Horner, a former jet pilot, has revolutionized US military ait strategy, overturning the outmoded tenets of the Vietnam era - a war in which he flew an F-105 Thunderbird 'Thud' fighter. he survived a 150mph near-crash in Libya in 1962 - an episode which itself belongs in a Tom Clancy film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Study of Order of Operations in Modern Air Warfare, February 25, 2011
This review is from: Every Man a Tiger (Tom Clancy Commanders) (Paperback)
In this non-fiction book, Tom Clancy and General Chuck Horner examine on a few different levels what it takes to get everything in place to conduct a sophisticated air war. Such an event, in this case Desert Shield/Storm, takes many years of preparation. This preparation requires enormous sums of money as well as long-term development of the officer and non-commissioned officer corp. The commitment to do this spans several presidential administrations.

One of the fun things of any Clancy book is to learn more military jargon. This book does not disappoint. We get to see the careers of Air Force generals as well as the analysis of them in action. The case is made decisively that we'll always need tigers in the leadership. At the end of the day, the whole air complex depends on the leadership. I think this book will continue to appeal to military history buffs, strategists and intelligence personnel and political policy experts.
