Book Description

June 15, 2010
Where do you go when the water rises?

For more than twenty years, John Kasich has sought the answer to this question and many of life’s most fundamental challenges in an unlikely place: his twice-a-month lunches with an irreverent, thoughtful, and spirited circle of guys who are members of a Bible study group. Every other Monday over lunch at an Italian restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, Kasich and half a dozen friends use the stories of the Good Book as a launching pad to ask questions running the gamut from “Does God exist?” to “What do you do if faith fails you?” This group, in reaching for life’s biggest mysteries while standing firmly rooted in the everyday, has become a cornerstone of Kasich’s life, one to which he consistently turns when the waters threaten to rise.

Every Other Monday is an honest look at how to build faith and find solace, even during the most

heartbreaking circumstances, and offers a template for reconsidering how we make everyday choices as well as life-changing decisions. Along with rousing personal anecdotes and poignant memories, Kasich shares some of the group’s frank discussions on the major themes found in the Bible—and in our daily lives—such as:

• CHARITY—How do you determine whether you’re giving enough (i.e., “the fatted calf” vs. “the skinny calf”) and why does it matter?

• JUSTICE—How do you deal with frustration when justice doesn’t always happen here on earth?

• ENVY—How do you absorb the inevitable disappointment when someone else gets the good fortune that you know was meant for you?

• FORGIVENESS—What do you do when you encounter hurtful behavior?

• AMBITION—How do you balance the demands of work and the material world while still growing spiritually?

Every Other Monday is a refreshing and forthright account of one group’s search for answers and meaning. From rebuilding trust to understanding why we sometimes fail in matters of morality even when we know better, it lays out a practical path for finding strength and resilience through faith and friendship.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Kasich, a former Republican congressman now running for governor of Ohio, has written a conversational account of the Bible study he organized more than 20 years ago in Westerville, a suburb of Columbus. Reared a Roman Catholic, Kasich drifted away from his religion as an adult but came to embrace an Anglican faith after both his parents were killed in a car crash by a drunk driver. The Bible study's eight members, who meet at a local diner, have changed over the years, but most seem to share his middle-class presumptions. The biggest faith challenge for these men is a preoccupation with theodicy: how can bad things happen to good people? The answers are mostly commonplace, as is Kasich's reading of the Bible, in which all the major characters, from Noah to Paul, are faithful and courageous examples of men worth emulating. For Kasich, the Bible study serves as a kind of therapeutic way to wrestle with perennial questions about mortality. The Christianity that emerges from these pages is tame and has nothing profound to say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get to know John Kasich June 15, 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book provides readers with a look at the man behind the former congressman / Fox News analyst / investment banker / candidate for governor. John Kasich really opens up about his personal quest for deep and meaningful religious understanding. While not deeply religious myself, I found that as I read, I was wishing that I knew these "bible guys", that I could have lunch with them, or that I could even just be a fly on the wall for their thoughtful and insightful looks at the Bible and the world.

"Every Other Monday" asks the questions we all have at one time or another. Kasich does not purport to have all the answers but he sends us on a journey that will help the reader come to his or her own conclusions.

I suffered a major heart attack in 1989 which led to a heart transplant two years later. I was struck with prostate cancer in 2003. I have asked the questions that are addressed in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why and When Faith Matters July 17, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Because I enjoyed listening to John Kasich on Fox News when he hosted "Heartland", I bought this newly published book about his faith journey out of curiousity.

The print is easy to read tho not well edited. The former congressman formed a group of educated and wealthy friends, after suffering a major turning point in his life, who agreed to meet for lunch every other Monday to discuss the Bible. Twenty years is a long time yet these friends continue to cherish their time together with the Bible as the main subject during their lunch hour.

The book appears to be a tribute to these friends and insights into their varied belief in God, the Bible, and faith in general.
There is nothing new in their debates but I have a great deal of respect for their bi-monthly priority and dedication to Christian principles.

Questioning the Bible, trying to make sense out of the mystery of life, reaching for a deeper understanding of what faith means - this is universal. Modern day life is filled with uncertainty and groups of friends from all walks of life can benefit from this lunch club concept of helpful discourse.

The book is not political or preachy at all. Obviously John Kasich feels people can benefit from lessons learned as they journey along with him and his "Bible Guys" as he refers to his friends! A nice book.

5.0 out of 5 stars very uplifting June 27, 2010

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It touched me in a very personal way. It is not a deeply theological book, but rather provides an every day layman's perspective and comments on biblical stories and allows you to really feel as if you are part of the inner circle. I would share this with everyone and Ohio should be lucky to have a man of this character running for govenor..

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a Bible study July 31, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
John Kasich's Every Other Monday: Twenty Years of Life, Lunch, Faith and Friendship is a quick and pleasant read with many important life lessons delivered in disarmingly simple and accessible language. As someone who also benefited from a Bible group for almost 12 years, I can relate to Kasich's closeness to his "Bible guys."

However, what strikes me more than the theology is the group's civility to one another when perhaps they don't agree about sticky issues in that most personal area of life: one's relationship with God. Civility is so sorely missing in our society, and when right- and left-wing Christians savage each other, all in Jesus's name, it's pretty discouraging to the rest of us. The members of this group don't always agree with one another on every point of discussion, but they accept their disagreements and continue to treat one another with respect. They see past doctrinal differences to the men behind them.

In a time when, "I don't agree with you" has become, "You're a *&^^&$_(@*%* idiot," this book reminds us what caring for one another is supposed to be about. While I don't agree with every theological interpretation the group comes to, I bet if I told them that, they'd listen and continue to allow me to state my opinions. I commend their attitude and recommend this book.

Another great book from Gov. Kasich! Having some of his other books, I was anxious to purchase this one. He's great!

The Governor once again shows his brilliance and humor! Would love to see him as our President!
