Get to know John Kasich,
This review is from: Every Other Monday: Twenty Years of Life, Lunch, Faith, and Friendship (Hardcover)
This book provides readers with a look at the man behind the former congressman / Fox News analyst / investment banker / candidate for governor. John Kasich really opens up about his personal quest for deep and meaningful religious understanding. While not deeply religious myself, I found that as I read, I was wishing that I knew these "bible guys", that I could have lunch with them, or that I could even just be a fly on the wall for their thoughtful and insightful looks at the Bible and the world.

A SEARCH FOR ANSWERS,

This review is from: Every Other Monday: Twenty Years of Life, Lunch, Faith, and Friendship (Hardcover)
"Every Other Monday" asks the questions we all have at one time or another. Kasich does not purport to have all the answers but he sends us on a journey that will help the reader come to his or her own conclusions.
I suffered a major heart attack in 1989 which led to a heart transplant two years later. I was struck with prostate cancer in 2003. I have asked the questions that are addressed in this book. It will help anyone who is searching find his or her wa Out Of The Night: The Spiritual Journey of Vietnam Vets

Because I enjoyed listening to John Kasich on Fox News when he hosted "Heartland", I bought this newly published book about his faith journey out of curiousity.
The print is easy to read tho not well edited. The former congressman formed a group of educated and wealthy friends, after suffering a major turning point in his life, who agreed to meet for lunch every other Monday to discuss the Bible. Twenty years is a long time yet these friends continue to cherish their time together with the Bible as the main subject during their lunch hour. The book appears to be a tribute to these friends and insights into their varied belief in God, the Bible, and faith in general. There is nothing new in their debates but I have a great deal of respect for their bi-monthly priority and dedication to Christian principles. Questioning the Bible, trying to make sense out of the mystery of life, reaching for a deeper understanding of what faith means - this is universal. Modern day life is filled with uncertainty and groups of friends from all walks of life can benefit from this lunch club concept of helpful discourse. The book is not political or preachy at all. Obviously John Kasich feels people can benefit from lessons learned as they journey along with him and his "Bible Guys" as he refers to his friends! A nice book.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It touched me in a very personal way. It is not a deeply theological book, but rather provides an every day layman's perspective and comments on biblical stories and allows you to really feel as if you are part of the inner circle. I would share this with everyone and Ohio should be lucky to have a man of this character running for govenor..

John Kasich's Every Other Monday: Twenty Years of Life, Lunch, Faith and Friendship is a quick and pleasant read with many important life lessons delivered in disarmingly simple and accessible language. As someone who also benefited from a Bible group for almost 12 years, I can relate to Kasich's closeness to his "Bible guys."
However, what strikes me more than the theology is the group's civility to one another when perhaps they don't agree about sticky issues in that most personal area of life: one's relationship with God. Civility is so sorely missing in our society, and when right- and left-wing Christians savage each other, all in Jesus's name, it's pretty discouraging to the rest of us. The members of this group don't always agree with one another on every point of discussion, but they accept their disagreements and continue to treat one another with respect. They see past doctrinal differences to the men behind them. In a time when, "I don't agree with you" has become, "You're a *&^^&$_(@*%* idiot," this book reminds us what caring for one another is supposed to be about. While I don't agree with every theological interpretation the group comes to, I bet if I told them that, they'd listen and continue to allow me to state my opinions. I commend their attitude and recommend this book.

I was surprised at the lack of depth in the book. There are also a few factual errors when referring to Biblical stories. Did anyone proof read or edit this book? I was expecting to discover some fresh insight regarding God, the Bible and the reality of the human condition but most of the conclusions and propositions were very superficial and routine. There were one or two "nuggets" in the book, worth underlining, but I expected much more. I do not recommend this book.

This review is from: Every Other Monday: Twenty Years of Life, Lunch, Faith, and Friendship (Hardcover) Like many, attracted to this due to author being on Fox News. Enjoy the man and his perspective on things political and elsewhere. Give John credit for wanting to go deeper into the Word. I was torn during reading of this that I was back and forth as to my reaction. Mostly till end, doubted whether there was true Jesus talk here, more an intellectual pursuit of what each participant thinks about the Bible. This is ultimate bad Bible Study in this pastor's opinion, because not all interpretations are correct. Check it out, Jesus never missed an opportunity to correct someone's doctrinal error. This group has an aversion to such. Interested people can check out John MacArthur's excellent book: The Jesus You Can't Ignore, which accurately shows that Jesus not only never backed down from disputing false interpretations or applications of the Scripture but actually picked fights to point such errors out. Secondly, this book suffers severely from an inadequate view of the Office of the Public Ministry, which is a gift of Christ to His people, see Ephesians 4:11. This inadequate view of pastors is unfortunately supported by the group's leader, Pastor Ted. He seems to also have liberal leanings, as evidenced by his suggestions of process theology. (check it out on Wikipedia if interested) Can't just have your own ideas about what God is or wants or what the Bible wishes to deliver. He shows this bias and leaning in such unbiblical comments as "faith and belief are two very different concepts in our lives." They are not in Christians, they are the same, synonoymous, as Romans 4 clearly teaches. He leads the group more in the direction of "faith of mankind in general" rather than the biblical faith in Christ crucified for sins, as Paul would say true and faithful preachers only teach and preach and must. Further, the view on church is not biblical, as most of the Monday group participants do not hold it in right regard as the true place where Jesus meets with His people to nourish their faith in the blessed means of grace. There are certainly good points to this effort, however, deserving of three stars. The interest and friendship and support these brothers have for each other is admirable and to be supported. More Jesus leading them through true Under Shepherds would certainly have made this a great book. I have personally been part of such groups and have some now, and we do not allow false doctrine to stand. We try to handle it lovingly and gently, but nonetheless, see to correct and mature each other in truth of God's Word.
