5.0 out of 5 stars Great Parenting Tool
I found this book to be a wonderful source of support for my views on parenting. I find myself referring back to it regularly to support me in my decisions. I think this is a great book for any parenting library.

I practice Attachment Parenting and *strongly* support it. Attachment Parenting has worked wonders in our family. I bought this book because it was listed in my "recommendations" section on amazon.com and it sounded great [I bought it about a year ago before any of the negative reviews you see here were posted].

This is the worst book I've ever paid money for. It is full of typos, grammatical errors, misspellings, sentence fragments - it is truly wretched. I was so angry that I spent the price of the book plus shipping for it - I felt horribly ripped off. This book is extremely poorly written and not worth the time it took to try to read it. [It had so many mistakes in it that it was extremely difficult to even attempt to read]. A year later I'm still annoyed at the time and money I wasted on this book. While the author seems genuinely passionate about the subject and is attempting to do a good thing in writing this book, I don't think this book is near the quality it needs to be before she takes people's money for it. I strongly suspect that many of the positive reviews posted here come from friends or family of the author - I can't see how an objective reader could recommend this book to anyone in good conscience.

Attachment Parenting is a wonderful subject and fully worth reading about, but if you want a good [GREAT] book on the subject, do yourself a favor and skip this one completely - read "Attachment Parenting" by Katie Allison Granju or *any* Dr. William Sears book. Those are dollars and hours you'll be very glad you spent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Content - Terrible Editing, January 7, 2000
By A Customer

This review is from: Every Parent's Guide to Attachment Parenting: Getting back to basic instincts! (Paperback)
This is a pretty good book. I agree with Ms. Frissell-Deppe's philosophy on childrearing and I think she does have a good "over view" of attachment parenting in this book. The book is also a pretty quick read, which is nice for new parents who don't have bunches of free time. However, the editing and proofreading are terrible - the book is *full* of errors (I've found errors on almost every page). Sentence fragments, grammatical errors, spelling errors, obvious key words left out of sentences so that the reader is left wondering what exactly the author was intending to say... I haven't purchased a book this full of errors ever before (and boy, I've purchased a bunch of books in my lifetime!). This book reads much more like a first draft than something that was edited, proofread, corrected, and ready for sale. Also, some of the "real life parent" comments seem a little irrelevant or redundant (although some are interesting). I do agree with the author's premise and she is obviously passionate about attachment parenting - and the book has a good concept behind it. However, I also felt that the author came accross as extremely defensive of attachment parenting and somewhat confrontational. I think that the happy, healthy, well behaved children that result from attachment parenting speak for themselves - there is no need for defensiveness in practicing a truly *excellent* parenting style. This book needs several rewrites with attention to detail before I feel it is ready for sale to the general public. I was terribly dissappointed in the quality of the writing. The editorial errors made it difficult and frustrating for me to read. I wouldn't mind this if I had been reading the author's personal web site, but since I *paid* for this book, I expected a bit more. I suggest a revision and then the author will have a darn good guide to Attachment Parenting for the general public. Until then, I'd have to recommend "Attachment Parenting" by Granju.

2.0 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent; a collection of emails does not make a book, June 11, 2000

The editor of this mess should be ashamed. (Or should I say "editors?" From the acknowledgements it looks like it was a handful of her friends and family who proofread for her.) Not only does this book read poorly, it is unbalanced, does not cite sources and even fails to acknowledge that the ideas in this book (e.g. the name "Attachment Parenting") were learned somewhere, not all invented by the author. Some portions--such as her chapter on (not) circumcising--are downright offensive, despite being mostly correct!

We are firmly committed attachment parents; my wife is a children's therapist and would not dream of parenting any other way, and our families are very supportive of this style of parenting. This book would not have convinced us, however, nor would it have helped us convince anyone else.

What we had hoped to gain from this book was some new insights, maybe a valuable lesson or two. We were very disappointed. It has saving graces: the stories from other parents are occasionally interesting, and the appendix listing other resources contained some we hadn't seen. But do yourself a favor: pick up Granju et. al. instead. It is thoughtful, attractively put together, well-researched, and contains loads of useful information that we've not seen elsewhere.

Add to this as many books by William and Martha Sears as you can get, and maybe a breastfeeding book like "Womanly Art," and you'll be all set.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written book on a great topic, March 21, 2000

As a new attachment parent I decided to read "everything" out there. I sure want my money back. Amazon should indicate when books are self-published. I feel cheated. This is such a poor work on a great topic. There are writing errors on every page. The book is also poorly organized. Claims are left unsupported by research. Although I agree with the author's supportive statements about attachment parenting, her style of sweeping generalizations and no supporting evidence would leave many readers to think there is no research supporting her claims. I find it very hard to believe that the positive reviews posted here aren't simply fabricated. Parents interested in attachment parenting should read the works that have been published by actual publishers. They are of a much higher quality and than this self published work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Typos typos!, July 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Every Parent's Guide to Attachment Parenting: Getting back to basic instincts! (Paperback)
When I picked up this book, I'd already read Granju's "Attachment Parenting." In comparison, "Every Parent's Guide. . ." is very poorly written, less informative and frankly not very interesting. It *is* the only book I've come across so far that discusses non-circumsision (a topic more books should discuss!), but other than that I would recommend Granju's book instead. Unfortunately I didn't find that "Every Parent's Guide" had much to say that further informed or challenged me about parenting styles. Rather, it is a basic introduction to attachment parenting with elementary and sometimes poorly explained logic. I wish I could return mine!

I found this book to be a wonderful source of support for my views on parenting. I find myself referring back to it regularly to support me in my decisions. I think this is a great book for any parenting library.

I enjoyed the beautiful photo's throughout the book as well as all the personal stories and statements from hundreds of other attachment parents. The author did a nice job with this book. I liked the easy to read format which was welcomed by my tired eyes.

It is quite obvious how passionate the author is about this style of parenting that she and many generations of her family have been dedicated to and successful with. I plan on giving this book to my husband to read since he is on the fence about a few parenting issues and this book will surely convince him to attachment parent.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for all new parents., February 4, 2000
This review is from: Every Parent's Guide to Attachment Parenting: Getting back to basic instincts! (Paperback)
If you are a new parent and you are out there exploring your options then Every Parent's Guide To Attachment Parenting is a book that you have to pick up. Filled with everything that you would need or want to know about Every Parent's Guide To Attachment Parenting. It amply illustrates the tremendous resources available for those choosing this method as well as the instinctive reasoning behind it. Included are some lovely photographs that highlight each issue brought up by the well defined chapters. My absolute favorite is Chapter 9; Books, Support Groups, Web Sites, Mailing Lists & Product Information. I think it is the best bet for quickly finding the resources to put you on the right path. This review is from: Every Parent's Guide to Attachment Parenting: Getting back to basic instincts! (Paperback)
I was fortunate to get an autographed copy of this book from the author. She wrote - PARENT WITH YOUR HEART AND YOU CAN'T GO WRONG. I think what she wrote in the book describes the reason behind this book. She is an advocate for attachment parenting. She wants parents to have the best choices available to them. She arms you with information that is important to pregnant woman, nursing mother's and parents. Attachment Parenting is based on instincts and knowledge. The book dispells the old myths of past generations. Foolish notions of old like it is best to let a baby cry it out, or if you hold a baby too much you will spoil it. Any new parent will certainly find helpful information that will answer there questions. I find it nice to share stories with other mothers on the getattached.com website. All the best to new parents everywhere.

This review is from: Every Parent's Guide to Attachment Parenting: Getting back to basic instincts! (Paperback)
Every Parent's Guide to Attachment Parenting helped me to prepare for the hospital experience. Every parent should know that they have control of how they want to be treated and how they want their child to be treated. The author had some no-nonsense advice that I thank her for from the bottom of my heart.
