Amazon.com Review

Every Parent's Guide to the Law is an easy-to-understand and easy-to-reference resource guide to parenting and the law that no family should be without. You may know when to expect your child to begin teething or how to give a "time out," but do you know enough about kids and tax issues? What about parental rights in the workplace? As Deborah L. Forman, a nationally known expert on family law and author of Every Parent's Guide to the Law, writes, "...the law has something to say about virtually every aspect of child rearing, from the decision to start a family to the fate of children after parents die."

Forman provides information on your teen's right to contraception, the ins and outs of adoption procedures, ways to deal with the juvenile court system, a pregnant woman's obligation to her fetus, gay parents' rights, fathers' rights, medical care regulations, laws regarding sperm and egg donation, what you can expect at a child support hearing, your child's right to disability education, and much more. This "big book" has legal information on everything that might possibly concern a parent. Laws differ from state to state, so by definition a book like this cannot supplant good legal assistance, but Every Parent's Guide to the Law is a good place to look before you call the lawyer. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Tackling topics of everyday concern as well as more unusual and troubling problems, law professor Forman aims to provide an overview of legal issues of interest to parents. To that end, she covers such issues as education, parents' rights at work, child care, health, finances, custody, support, juvenile crime, abuse, father's rights, adoption, and reproductive technologies, using anecdotes and examples from familiar news stories as the starting point for explanations of the law and its application in common situations. Such current topics as tuition vouchers and protecting children from inappropriate material on the Internet also receive attention. The writing is clear, and Forman does not shortchange difficult or complicated subjects. Recommended for most public libraries.?Joan Pedzich, Harris, Beach & Wilcox, Rochester, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars I am curious about. . ., April 9, 2001

It seemed to be easier raising children years ago. Society has become complex; more mothers are in the workforce; more children are raised in single-parent households and there are increasingly more choices involving pregancy and starting a family.

Every Parent's Guide to the Law by Deborah L. Forman offers practical advice to the problems and situations parents face daily and an awareness of legal issues parents may encounter. This valuable reference book should be in every parent's library. Useful as a reference tool, it is also well-written and an easy read. Case studies are interspersed throughout and help interpert complex legal problems.

I would recommend this book to anyone starting a family or to parents with children at home.
