Upon reading other reviews, I discovered that this book is part of a trilogy. Which will probably explain why I felt very disconnected while reading it. The descriptions and details were great, but I never felt myself really falling in love with the characters. I spent much of my time, flipping thru the pages trying to find the "meat" of the book.

I believe, I am probably in the minority, but as I mentioned before, I had a truly difficult time getting into this book. The cover art drew me in, but then left me hanging. Little bits revealed in the story, I believe could have had greater suspense or reason for it being revealed (such as when Sophie learns of her heritage). Even the love story between her and Ethan was so predictable, that I became bored with it all.

I'm not really sure what I was looking for, other than wanting to fall in love with a story. It didn't happen with this book. I put it down, and then promptly forgot about it.

I received this book in ebook format, from BookSneeze which is owned and operated by Thomas Nelson Publishers. All opinions are my own, and I am not compensated in any form for my opinion.

Every Perfect Gift was my first novel by Dorothy Love and the last of the 'Hickory Ridge Romance' series. This fact shall perhaps account for my dismay at reading lines which fitfully alluded to other stories and characters. Perhaps it would be fair to suggest readers to read the first two books to enable them to understand a little more of Sophie's story.

Dorothy Love gives her audience a good amount of historical facts, all interesting enough for this historical buff to check out. 'Every Perfect Gift's plot however is not what I expected.

At times slow as molasses, at others the inclusion of characters and events I had no knowledge of left me irritated and any interest in the main protagonist, her budding romance or any of the sub characters quickly subsided (unless you count a young scamp named Robbie featured in Sophie's past now turned Minister)!
There seemed to be loose ends and you wonder at the direction the author took with the plot.

Let me clarify this review is based on an ARC in need of additional editing which might account also for any lack of enthusiasm on my part.

The one satisfying moment related to description of Sophie's chosen profession was her never ending patience with defunct printing machines. I also liked the red livery next to the white church on the cover (described in such fashion in the book).

I received this book free from LITFUSE GROUP as part of their blogger review program.

Every Perfect Gift was a great addition to the Hickory Ridge series! I'm a little sad that this is the final book, but except for wishing some things had ended differently, it was a good conclusion.

I loved both of the main characters (Ethan and Sophie) and how previous characters (including Ada and Carrie) appeared in Every Perfect Gift - it was great to get updates on their lives.

The story was very good and I liked it from the beginning on! There were a couple surprises and some romance - overall a great read that I really enjoyed! If you like historical romances, then I think you'd like Every Perfect Gift. While I don't think it's entirely necessary to read Beyond All Measure and Beauty for Ashes first, you'd probably want to because then you'd know the history of Hickory Ridge, Tennessee. :)

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

Ethan Heyward is a 31-year-old, single man with a secret. When asked about his past, he is very reluctant to say more than that he is from Georgia. He doesn't talk about his family or friends. He is overseeing the building of a 5-star resort in Hickory Ridge, Tennessee. He handles payroll, ordering construction supplies, hiring, firing, and disagreements between his employees. His job is to make sure the resort is top notch and will draw the elite and rich tourists. No amenity must be left to chance. Ethan is therefore extremely busy. He is also charitable, generous, and God-fearing. When he meets Sophie, he knows she is the one woman for him. Can he trust her with his secret? For so long he has been seeking revenge and justice. Can he give up his quest? Will he be able to hear the truth and learn to forgive? God will have him face his past, but will he lose Sophie's affections when she learns about his past?
Sophie Caldwell has returned to the town that spurned her in order to start up the defunct newspaper. She has experience as a reporter and knows her way around a printing press, which is a good thing because the old press left behind from the former newspaper owners breaks down at least once a day. Sophie is wary of the town's reception to her return. While growing up, she was looked down upon and avoided due to what everyone thought was her "mixed blood". She had been dropped off at the town orphanage when she was 4 years old. She was too young to remember her parents and all assumed them dead. She had no way to find out her heritage to prove or disprove if she had African American blood in her family tree or not. This is Sophie's secret.
