Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3 Up-A wonderful potpourri of recipes for many occasions. Following an author's note that stresses the importance of traditions and togetherness and gives safety precautions for the approximately 70 recipes that follow, Zalben offers two to seven recipes for each national or religious holiday. All of the recipes are kosher and vary in difficulty from simple to advanced. Most require adult supervision, and the foreword clearly states that the need for such supervision obviously varies from family to family. Whether readers want to know how to decorate Easter eggs, arrange the seder plate, bake Irish soda bread, prepare latkes, make sweet potato pudding for Kwanzaa, or flip a veggie burger-it's all here. The Halloween party foods will have particular appeal. Each holiday is introduced with a one-page historical account. Ingredients are easily obtainable and clearly listed. Illustrations have a soft delicacy that is both pleasing to the eye and well matched to the text. Back matter includes an excellent glossary of cooking terms. This winning title with a multicultural appeal will surely whet the appetite of anyone who browses through its pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cookbook Has Air of Nostalgia, April 18, 2000
This review is from: To Every Season: A Family Holiday Cookbook (Hardcover)
I truly enjoyed To Every Season: A Family Holiday Cookbook. The book encompasses recipes for 16 major American holidays, including Christmas, Mother's Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. I found the prefaces to each holiday section fascinating and filled with delightful historical tidbits. The book has wonderful multicultural leanings with its inclusion of recipes for Passover, Kwanzaa, and Chanukah. I would have liked to have seen more recipes that could be made by or with children. The book caters more to adult tastes and preferences than to those of children. Children will enjoy the pictures and reading about the different holiday traditions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Holidays, November 17, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this book to introduce new foods and cultural traditions to our family. The section on Passover was most helpful in our religious education classroom adequately explaining the Seder Table and tradition. A helpful reference book on our shelf of cookbooks to be glanced at from time to time more for background information than recipes. At the bargain price at which it was offered...who could resist.
