A mellower Lucy Kaplansky,
By
This review is from: Every Single Day (Audio CD)
Ten Year Night is the album I listened to 'every single day' the first month after purchasing it. This one? I listened to it once and shelved it. Three months later I gave it another listen. Maybe it was the place I was in? You never know, right? Wrong. SIX months later, I like it. It snuck up on me. So where am I with this one? Three stars. This will always be one of the CD's in my collection that I'm happy I own, but that I play as I revisit Kaplansky's catalog prior to seeing her in concert. ... It is good background music during dinner or while reading a book. There are a few gems here. The song for Molly is touching. The covers that follow it are well done too. If you don't own "Ten Year Night" and want to hear a passion filled Kaplansky, buy that CD first. If you're in the mood to add to your collection of music to listen to on a quiet night, this one will fit right in.

Not the Best Lucy,

Here's the thing. I love Lucy's voice and most of the songs she and Richard pen. This isn't a bad album, in fact, I like listening to it. The problem is that Lucy has set a standard that is tough to live up to. "Ten Year Night" was a great album, following her two early solos and "Cry, Cry, Cry" with personal, powerful images of life. I just don't get that same feel from this set of songs. Maybe its the more lush, fuller arrangements which are at odds with how I've seen her perform live; solo or with a couple other folkies and their plain ol' guitars. As a Minnesotan, I hope she keeps tabs on her buddy John Gorka who now lives in the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes and puts together either a studio or a live album with John. From the sounds of this work, I'd prefer live. Simple, from the heart but powerful. Just Lucy and her guitar. That's a winning combination.

At the top of her form!,

This review is from: Every Single Day (Audio CD)
The maddeningly familiar voice that has graced recordings by John Gorka, Richard Shindell, Shawn Colvin and many others finally shines on its own! This album is the best-produced and most well-written entry in Lucy Kaplansky's oeuvre. Crystal clear recording and tasteful arrangements grace these songs in a way not heard on her previous albums. From the heart-breaking honesty and directness of "Song For Molly" to the deceptively uptempo backing that masks the cruel story in "Written On The Back Of His Hand", this album is a many-faceted, highly polished gem. It will be in heavy rotation on my radio show at WFCF for months to come. You may not realize it yet, but if you don't own this album there is a gaping void in your music collection.

Maybe Lucy's Best,

This is a great album, maybe Lucy's best. It's music has much more texture than Ten Year Night, although the songs don't quite match that albums intimacy.Still, Every Single Day is a great album. The faster, upbeat songs are some of Lucy's best. "Don't Mind Me" is perhaps her most engaging upbeat song. "Broken Things" is a great cover in the mold of Ten Year Night's "Just You Tonight". And "Nowhere" will put you on bed rest for days.

Good, but not her best...,

This review is from: Every Single Day (Audio CD)
I liked this album a lot; I keep it in the car and always find something new to like about it through repeated listening. If you're new to her, though, I'd recommend Ten-Year Night, which is phenomenal; stronger writing, more breadth and depth in the material. Either album, her voice and guitar work are great, passionate and soulful.

Another Gem...,

This is another great piece of work from Lucy Kaplansky. Not only does she have great taste for material...she also has the talent to do the covers justice. Kaplansky's version of Julie Miller's "Broken Things" takes my breath away. (It doesn't hurt to have Jennifer Kimball's voice floating around either...more proof of Lucy's great musical taste.) But it's her own songs on this cd that I just can't get enough of and that stick in my head. The title track is Kaplansky at her best. This is one artist with SO much to offer...and more and more people are discovering that fact Every Single Day.

THERE IS NOT A SONG TO BE SKIPPED ON THIS CD!,

I have all of Lucy's cds and this is her best by far. It has intricate vocals that are lifted, not drowned, by the instrumentation. Her vocal pairings with John Gorka and Richard Shindell are scrumptous. There are a few good sing-a-long songs including "Don't Mind Me" and "Every Single Day". The CD has a good variety songs. If I could only take one cd on a road trip, this would be it. "Don't Mind Me" is a fun and subliminally lustful song about love. Then there is a sad song about Lucy's mother who loses her memory, but not her pride. Although I have several hundred cds, there are only a few that I play from start to finish without skipping a song or two. This cd is one of the few that I love in its entirety.

THE all-time perfect voice for harmonies! Lucy is fantastic.,
This review is from: Every Single Day (Audio CD)
This is Lucy Kaplansky's 4th and best solo album with guest appearances from Steve Earl, John Gorka, and others. Topics of songs she penned for this one range from the domestic violence of opener "Written on the Back of His Hand" to true human guilt, to the three generations of women and a wedding ring of "Molly's Song." Her own songs have a quality of observation of human nature that rings true. Lucy Kaplansky began 20 or so years ago singing harmonies with Shawn Colvin in the Northeast folk circut. She is no Colvin clone, though, and is actually a more accomplished vocalist than her old partner. She came of age with fellow artist John Gorka, with whom she still often collaborates on stage. She left music for many years to complete a PhD and work as a psychologist. 7 years ago she returned to recording and touring on her own as well as being 1/3 of the super group Cry, Cry, Cry (Dar Williams & Richard Shindell). She is at the height of her talents when she harmonizes, and creates absolutely magical, spiritually trancendent moments in concert. A capable guitarist, and stunning interpreter of other's as well as her own compositions, she is a truth teller. Her voice is clear and perfect and unaffected. Perhaps her best, most beautiful recorded work to date is found on The Wayfaring Strangers' album "Shifting Sands of Time." Be sure to check out "High on a Mountain" and "Wayfaring Stranger" on that offering. She also appears on Nina Gerber's new album in a standout cover of a Nancy Griffith tune. She appears on "A Nod To Bob" a tribute album by various artists celebrating Dylan's 60th b-day, and on the Greg Brown trubute "Going Driftless" that raised money for breast cancer research. Her cover of Julie Miller's "Broken Things" on Every Single Day is stunning. She is maturing rapidly as a songwriter, and as a performing musician she is a knockout! Be sure to also check out "Ten Year Night," a solid album which preceeded this one. Run, do not walk, to see this woman in concert, solo or with anyone. She is superb.

Another Wonderful Effort from Lucy Kaplansky,
By
This review is from: Every Single Day (Audio CD)
On This album, Every Single Day, Lucy Kaplansky combines her melotic voice with soft guitar, drums and bass, blending with the harmonies of Buddy Miller and Steve Earl to make a musically rich album. Acording to Kaplansky, this is the most complex album she's ever done to date, and this is reflected in her work. My favorite tracks are: "Guilty as Sin" "Every Single Day" and "Don't Mind Me" every song on this CD is a well polished pearl, even her cover of Julie Miller's Broken Things is wonderful. Seven of the tracks are Lucy originals, and four are covers, the covers are wonderful. This is one of Lucy Kaplansky's best efforts to date, if you liked Ten Year Night, The Tide, or the stuff she did with Cry, Cry, Cry, get this album!

Lucy's Best Produced Album Yet,
By A Customer
This review is from: Every Single Day (Audio CD)
This is Lucy's best produced album yet. As usual the covers are amazing. Her renditions of You're Still Standing There (with John Gorka) and The Angels Rejoiced Last Night (with Richard Shindell) are haunting. Lucy's own material continues to grow and includes the amazingly beautiful and sensitive Song for Molly and other winners like Don't Mind Me and Every Single Day. This album is a winner.
