5.0 out of 5 stars Canning like your grandmother did October 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an excellant book on many of the lost and forgotten ways of canning food. While some people may frown on older methods due to modern day health issues, I really wanted this valuable knoweldge for use when it might not be practical or have modern equipment available to put up my harvest. This is a rare and really valuable book, that with a bit of common sense and following the warnings in the book, one can can almost anything. This book was a mainstay in its time and well respected by housewives as a handy reference guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic Preppers Canning Methods explained October 12, 2011
Format:Paperback
I truly enjoy reading historical accounts of those who strived to survive by putting aside a portion of their harvest for future use and these insights into methods of preserving food that sustained my grand and great-grandparents is a valuable addition to my collection. The cold pack method has always been a mystery until this book explained it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making sure we have hard copy reference October 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Looking at the way things are going, we're stocking up on hard-copy canning, food preservation, and gardening reference material. We stumbled over this book during our literary search, and were quite delighted to purchase, receive, and peruse it. We plan on putting it to some good use!

1.0 out of 5 stars Cold Pack Method January 2, 2013
By KAJ
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Do Not Get the Kindle version because you cannot read the all the charts in the book. This makes it pretty much worthless.
I will have to order the hard copy if I ever want to use this for canning.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Albiet Older Book on Canning July 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was surprised by the wealth of information about canning found in this ebook. Even though it was written in 1920, much of the information is still relevent to a novice canner today. It was a bit odd that there was information about preparing pigeon and head cheese for instance, but overall there were many good tips and the number of things one can "can" is impressive. My only gripe is that there were no pictures or drawings. I would think an updated version with color photos would have better impact, especially in this visually oriented age.

3.0 out of 5 stars not for beginners March 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
knew when I bought this it would be dated, and it is. that does not mean that there isn't information in here that can add to the experienced canner's knowledge. Would NOT recommend this for the beginner as some of these techniques have been proven a bit unsafe.

4.0 out of 5 stars greatly enjoyed this historical find April 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
OK, well I had a whole review posted, which got deleted without posting... sigh... let's try that one again.

I picked up this book for free, as I happen to be a newish/beginner canner/pickler/preserver, and I'm definitely obsessed. I have been getting my hands on every book on the subject that I can.

This is such an interesting, historical look at how canning has evolved over the years. Some things are much the same as we do it today, and other methods are much, much different.

It's not a beginner book, and I wouldn't take this book without a big grain of salt, as preserving methods have come a long way.

2.0 out of 5 stars Information is not up to date
While most of the information is useful, not all of it meets today's safe food handling requirements. If you are just starting out, get a Ball Blue Book. Read more
