Every Time We Kiss by Christie Kelley,
By
This review is from: Every Time We Kiss (Mass Market Paperback)
I have a problem. I'm a readaholic. Once I start a book, I just have to finish it. Of the thousands of books I've read over my life, I can probably count the ones I couldn't finish on two hands. I did finish "Every Time We Kiss" by Christie Kelley. But it also became a struggle at times. I think my problem stemmed mainly from my dislike of the heroine and the horrible sense of selfishness I felt from her actions.
Lady Jennette has been in mourning for five long years since the death of her fiance. Her outward mourning is really more of a cover for her sense of guilt over his death...and her attraction to his best friend. Although a beauty, she's decided she doesn't deserve happiness and therefore has vowed not to marry. Matthew is the newly ascended Earl of Blackburn. For five years he has been reviled by the ton for unintentionally killing his best friend, Jennette's fiance. Unfortunately for him, the title doesn't come with the necessary funds to keep his tenants and estates viable so he must marry for money. Of course, trying to marry anyone while being considered a black sheep tends to be a bit difficult so he throws himself on Jennette's mercy and asks her to help him find a suitable bride or marry him herself. Truly the actions of a scoundrel! Let me be honest here. Jennette was a selfish twit and Matthew was either very stupid or a saint. I just could NOT 'buy' this plot. BOTH of them suffering for five long years for something that could have been cleared up fairly easily. They had such a strong attraction for each other that they could only stay apart by never seeing each other so I guess that's one reason for all the angst in the plot, but it was just too much for me. "Every Time We Kiss" is a fairly quick read. If you enjoy the long-suffering hero type and the helplessly virtuous victim heroine...then you'll really enjoy Christie Kelley's story. I like her writing style, but this plot just about did me in!

This was great novel - Matthew is broke and now the new Earl of Blackburn. He was has been in love with his bestfriend's fiance but after a terrible death of his friend everything change. Everyone in the Ton thinks that Matthew killed his friend, but he knows the truth. Now years later is asking Lady Jennette to either find him a wife or become his wife - to save his estate. I love the chemistry with character...and great side stories.
If you enjoy this genre I would also suggest; Every Night I'm Yours (Zebra Historical Romance) , As Luck Would Have It (Leisure Historical Romance), Too Hot For A Spy (Zebra Debut).

Absolutely riveting!,
This review is from: Every Time We Kiss (Mass Market Paperback)
I could not put this book down. Filled with characters I really cared about, poignant situations (relieved with a little timely humor) and an attraction between the hero and heroine that just leapt off the page, "Every Time We Kiss" kept me absolutely riveted. Yes, this a romance and we all know romances are supposed to have a happy ending, but the story kept me in suspense up until the last page. A wonderful piece of storytelling. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

For those of you interested in a loving romance that relates to reality, friendships and love - this is a wonderful read. I finished this book in 2 days. My friends always and say, "you know when a book is good if it is finished in under a week". Yes. This book was wonderful. As are all of this author's pieces.

While not a perfect book, this was delightful! I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud like I did with this book. The twists in the story kept it moving along in a most interesting way. The writing is not quite first-rate and the ending dragged out a bit, but the humor made me give the book 5 stars. Also, I LOVE Somerton and can't wait to see what he will do next. He steals every scene he is in. I liked the first book in this series (Every Night I'm Yours), but I thought this one was better. Now, on to book 3!

Jennette is a total bit@3,
This review is from: Every Time We Kiss (Mass Market Paperback)
I read the first book in the Spinster series. Every Night I'm Yours" and loved it. This one however, well the Hero is lovely, the heroine is rubbish. In truth she's a selfish, shallow, cruel witch to Blackburn throughout the entire book when the whole time she could have repaired the damage to Blackburn's reputation with a few carefully chosen whispers, but instead she was a coward and I had no respect for her. She even considers giving Blackburn the cut direct, this after seeing first hand how horribly he is treated by the Ton twits at a country party. All because of her! Feh, I just did not connect with her at all. The story was unremarkable and totally predictable which is true of most regencies but at least having a H/h match to root for makes it worth the journey. This was totally disappointing because Jennette's character had no layers other than cowardice. I kept waiting for the big moment when she finally grows a pair but two thirds into the book I was still waiting. I'll still read the rest of her Spinster series but so far the first is the best. I gave it 2 stars for good punctuation.

Hero is fabulous but the heroine isn't *spoiler*,

This review is from: Every Time We Kiss (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading the first few chapters of Every time we Kiss, I really wondered if I would get past my dislike for the heroine. I never did. This novel, which I had a difficult time finishing, never grew on me even though the hero is the noblest of men.
Heroine Jennette has decided that she is going to Florence to study art when she turns twenty-five and receives her inheritance. She desires to escape England because she knows she has wronged hero Matthew, the Earl of Blackburn for five years concerning her fiancé's death. *Spoiler* Jennette had been engaged to Matthew's best friend John and during some sword play John was fatally wounded totally by accident. Jennette was there with Matthew and John when he died so she knows exactly what happened that fateful day but keeps mum about all the facts. Jennette feels she should go away and let Matthew have a chance at getting a bride as he has been totally shunned by the ton for the last five years and branded a murderer. I never understood why Jennette thought her disappearance would change Matthew's circumstances, I thought her absence would only add specualtion to Matthew's damaged reputation. I thought she was acting cowardly by running from the results of her actions. Matthew is broke thanks to his father and he needs money quickly so he finds Jennette and they reach a bargain, she will find him a wife in a month or marry him herself. If she doesn't he will reveal secrets about her past. Jennette is furious with Matthew (she often comes across as the wronged party, even though she rarely is) but she agrees to find him a wife. She is very attracted to Matthew herself. Her matchmaking skills leave much to desired because the ton still wants nothing to do with Matthew. I don't want to give away too much of this novel but Jennette's actions toward Matthew are beyond cowardly. She could have restored Matthew's reputation but decides hers is more important. She even brings up his past when she tries to convince others that she is not interested in the man. Matthew has the patience of a saint with Jennette. They engage in many trysts and Jennette always walks away from them knowing she will not make a future with this wronged man. Matthew is more than confused by her actions. Jennette has the ability not only to lie to the ton convincingly but she lies to herself rather well too. She refuses to really examine her feelings toward Matthew and runs away from her problems or expects others to clean up her messes. I kept hoping with each chapter that Jenette would get beyond her selfishness and do the right thing. She never did. Even in the last chapters she seemed to be willing to believe the worst in Matthew who had proved himself more than loyal and faithful to her throughout the years.

I'd been waiting to read Matthew's story and now I'm sorry I paid for it. He must have been really in love to keep up with Jeanette. She was a horrible heroine. She was spoiled, self-centered, shallow, and cared too much about what people thought of her. She was rotten to Matthew and he deserved someone so much better. Someone who didn't actually listen to the gossips and believed he was a gambler. Every time she said that about him I wanted to slap her. Skip this book one, there was hardly any romance in it anyway.

**Spoiler Alert** During an afternoon when Jennette her financee and his friend Matthew were cutting up an accident occured in which Jennete's financee John was killed. John ask his friend Matthew to protect Jenette's name and her family. So Matthew took the blame for the event and it ruined his life and his name. For 5 long years Matthew and Jenette have stayed away from each other. Matthew has inhereted the title along with a mountain of debts from his wastrel father and brother with no way pay them,or take care of his tenents or his estates. The only way for Matthew to become solvent is to marry a rich wife but this is impossible as no parent will even let their daughter in the same room with Matthew nor is he invited into the right kind of parties to meet anyone and if he is he is shuned. Jennette is a selfish twit who is attracted to Matthew and he has alway been attracted to her. However, he sneaks into her birthday party and accosts her. He explains he has to have a rich wife and it is going to be her. That she owes him which she does. In the end Matthew was either very stupid or a saint he can't follow through and hurt Jennette. But they can't seem to keep there hands off of each other. But Jennette is always "I can't marry him because he deserves someone so much better, over and over. This could have been such a good book, the others were great but Jennette was such a Twit honestly just could not see any good qualities until in the other books.
