Cheap Trick's video history,
By bunezuela "bunezuela" (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Every Trick in the Book [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A fantastic collection of Cheap Trick videos, this one is not to be missed by fans. It spans their career from the early 90's back to the Dream Police era in reverse chronological order. There's Budokan footage on here, as well as their high energy performance of "Ain't That A Shame" on the American Music Awards. A chronicle of every up and down of their careers, you'll enjoy the "in jokes" for serious Cheap Trick fans. There's hokey "concept" videos, bad hair videos, and a nod to Elvis. The best are their live performances, when they simply turn on a camera and play. Don't miss this one, it's a bargain, and a great way to spend an evening with Cheap Trick. END

A Video History of America's Most Underrated Rock Band!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Every Trick in the Book [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Great fun. Cheap Trick is America's Greatest Living Rock 'n' Roll Band, and you can watch it all de-evolve (Videos in reverse Chronilogical order) before your eyes. Every Trick in The Book is an accounting of every Cheap Trick video from Pre-MTV days to 1990 (The band continues to impress with over 200 live shows a year!) The video also serves as a great history of Music Videos in general...From good old fashion live performance, to appearences on awards shows, to trying to get a band to conform to a really lame concept video. Through it all, the high voltage power metal pre-punk rock 'n roll of a great band can be experienced! Joe Bob says Five Stars Check it out!!! END

Bit of a bummer this one hasn't been updated for a dvd release. Plenty of live cuts and promo videos spanning from the late 1970s to the late 1980s.

This DVD is a great blast from the past!! It is fun to watch old videos and remember what you were doing when they first came out. They should make volume 2 with some of the newer videos.

VHS RULES (for this release),
By
This review is from: Cheap Trick: Every Trick In The Book (DVD)
First off, I don't have the dvd version, and I will not be buying it. The reason being: the track listing is the same as the VHS tape that came out 20 years ago!! I still have my VCR & this tape in my collection, it sounds & looks great to these 39 year old eyes. I can't bring myself to spend money on this when the fans have been waiting for 20 years for a video collection from this terrific band, and there's nothing new on this. If one additional video was included, they would have gotten my money. Lord knows there's plenty of promo videos that aren't included on this compilation. Five songs from the 1st album, "Up The Creek", "If You Need Me", "Woke Up With A Monster", "You're All I Wanna Do", "Say Goodbye", "That '70's Song", & "Sick Man of Europe". Not to mention an unending list of tv appearances, etc... AFTER 20 YEARS, throw the fans a bone!

I had been waiting years to have this on DVD, thwarted by Sony's long-standing halt on releasing back catalogue music video programs on DVD, but now, for the first time ever, Sony Music has licensed a video program to an independant label(Britain's "Cherry Red") for DVD reissue. Fear not, North American fans, because the disc has been manufactured primarily for export to North America, and it is NTSC/All Regions. Amazon had initially, incorrectly listed this as a Blu-Ray disc, but rest assured that it is a regular DVD.The compilation is mostly a collection of music videos from the group's 1970's & 1980's heyday on the EPIC label. Now we fans can finally retire our old VHS & Laserdisc editions of the program.

I have been a fan of Cheap Trick ever since March of 2008, when I saw them live at the convocation center in Dekalb Illinois. I got dragged to the show by my brother, but a second into their intro song "Hello There," I was completely hooked, and since then I have been collecting every Cheap Trick related product I can get my hands on. This DVD is no exception.First of all, The product was shipped very quickly, which has always been my experiance with Amazon orders. It came well packaged and although the description said "acceptable condition, it looked practically new. The box was mint, and the disc inside looked as if it had never been taken out. Secondly, the program played pefectly when I watched it. Although being a Cheap Trick fanatic, I do wish that the collection could have featured some of their newer offerings, such as "saygoodbye," and "Woke up with a Monster". However, I believe that the origninal VHS version of every trick in the book was released a few years before either of those aforementioned videos, so I can't really complain. Over all, a great buy for those who can't make it through a day without hearing a few "Voices," or air-guitaring "Ain't That a Shame".

First of all, let me say that I am a HUGE Cheap Trick fan. I pre-ordered this item on blu-ray because I wanted this item for years. I used to have this on vhs. I was very excited to find out it was coming out. Amazon sent me the regular dvd (for some reason it was never coming out on blu-ray!) Amazon never sent me a correction notice or anything. I saw postings that other Cheap Trick fans were pissed for the same reasons. Some of these people received info from Amazon. I decided to keep my standard copy on dvd because I waited years for the item to be available. I put it in and I have to be honest....It was the worst picture quality one could see. It looked like they transferred a used vhs copy over to dvd. Picture quality is CRAP at best! I hope Cheap Trick or their management didn't have any control over this, but it is by far the worst I have ever seen on dvd. They could have taken the time to clean the picture up. I would rate this no stars if I was allowed to.I also believed that they could have added more videos to the set. Where's "Up the Creek"? I also pre-ordered the new Sgt. Pepper concert. I hear great things about it. That will be my next review.

I have to admit, even though I have loved Cheap Trick since "Dream Police" the videos were always a bit cheesey and the best ones on this collection are the live ones. The best one has to be "Ain't That A Shame" that one alone is worth the price of the whole DVD. I really think this is a rather incomplete compilation without a part II. There is a lot of really good footage of the band and would love to see them come out with a DVD that had the SNL appearence, Rock Concert and the Alan Thicke show. I know there is tons of footage from Japan as well which would be a real treat to have. Until then, this is a pretty good DVD and I enjoy watching it.
