Shanice Reigns Supreme!,
By Lamar Gray (ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Every Woman Dreams (Audio CD)
Shanice seldomly records as evident in the huge gap between her album releases.
Shanice is known most notably for her #2 Pop hit, I Love Your Smile. While Shanice has had other hits throughout the years, she's remained under the radar. Her stint as a background singer eventually landed her a deal with LaFace Records. Shanice released one album under LaFace which was moderately successful. It produced her last biggest hit to date, When I Close My Eyes. Seven years later(yes it's been that long), Shanice blesses us once again with her magnificent five-octave range. Shanice has really kept her voice in great shape over the years. She hasn't missed a beat. She sings with such confidence on this record. She sings candidly about her marriage to TV star Flex Alexander. The production is top-notch. The vocals are crisp and soaring. The writing is excellent. This is truly a great album! A must buy! ***** My personal highlights include: Take Care Of U Forever Like A Rose Every Woman Dreams Keep It To Yourself Loving You --a rerecorded version of the Minnie Riperton hit

'Every Woman Dreams' is the Sleeper Hit of the Year!,
By
This review is from: Every Woman Dreams (Audio CD)
After a seven year hiatus, this songstress returns for a comeback that many probably wished would have happened sooner. Breaking on the seen in the mid-to-late 1980s, Shanice was the young singer that we all knew and loved. After mega hits like "Silent Prayer" and "I Love Your Smile," the marketing geniuses couldn't capture enough buzz for her later albums. Fast forward to today, and Shanice has yet another opportunity to fight for the attention of the masses. And with Every Woman Dreams, she definitely has the musical artillery to back it all up.
Although the album starts with the lackluster "Get Up," it rolls right into the dynamic first single "Every Woman Dreams." It showcases all of her talent and reminds everybody that she is a grown woman doing grown things nowadays. "Things In The Movies" is enjoyable ballad that uses Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "I Miss You." She gives some good advice with "Keep It To Yourself" and sets the mood with "Take Care of U." "So Sexy" is an unnecessary fast cut, but it's obvious she wants to keep herself from being pigeon-holed as just one thing. "That's Why I Love U" brings it back to the slow jams, infusing a slight touch of old-school percussion in the background. "Crazy 4 U" is a light and sentimental ballad with a lot of crossover appeal. "So Free" expresses the feeling of being autonomous, "Chocolate" compares a man to her favorite candy, and "Lovin' You" is a cover of the classic jam by Minnie Riperton. The tender "Forever Like A Rose," the thought-provoking "Can't Imagine," and the ode to her husband on "Joy" close out this phenomenally impressive album. It's almost scary that Shanice was able to put together such an amazing album after 19 years in the business. You truly won't regret adding Every Woman Dreams to your music collection. It would be a shame for this independent release to go unnoticed by the R&B market. So help get the word out because that's the only way we will see this illustrious singer get her just due.

Every Artist Dreams ... of Releasing a Great CD like this One !,
By FredericWhite "FredericWhite" (Montreal,Canada) - See all my reviews

With a few exceptions, the majority of reviews on Amazon confirm Shanice does come into her own as a serious R/B vocalist on this release. She delivers a timeless product more on the musical level of Mary J. Blidge, Corrinne Bailey Rae and less crammed with Janet undertones. Every Woman Dreams is a sheer melodic delight. The track compilation is strong and very radio friendly yet the producers uphold a level of musical quality that is sophisticated and very sensual. The one faux pas is the ill advise attempt to tackle the notorious 70s track Loving You from Minnie Ripperton. Unfortunately, Shanice's version fails to erase the original from memory. Otherwise this CD is flawless. The audience will surely welcome the opportunity to finally audition a young vocalist bringing something interesting to the forefront of an industry in trouble. Personal favorite tracks are Forever Like A Rose, Every Woman Dreams, I Can Dream, Crazy For U ( a track that sounds very India Arie).

SUPERB!!!!,

Shanice has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard and is one of my favorite top 5 female artists of all time. The problem with people like her is that if you're not dressing like a bimbo, have sexually explicit lyrics or run with the latest Hip-Hop crew, you will go virtually unnoticed. Even as great as Mariah's voice is, she eventually turned from her once sweet, innocent demeanor to perhaps someone just short of a (you can fill in the blank). Too bad this is the thing that sells records and gets the artists their exposure.
If talent and was the primary sell of an album, I'm sure Every Woman Dreams would be double platinum. If what you are looking for is an exceptional "grown up" R&B album with one of the best voices on the planet, then buy this album. If you think this album is nice, be sure to check out her last album also. To me that was just as nice. Too bad Amazon hasn't posted samples but listen to the samples from her last cd (Shanice) to get a sample of her wonderful voice.

A little disappointing,
This review is from: Every Woman Dreams (Audio CD)
Ok, I love Shanice and was anticipating this album for months. Maybe anticipating it a little too much. The album is just ok and feels a little contrived or maybe just over the top. It's obvious from her latest video and listening to the album that she is in love with her man, but c'mon, we get the picture. Let's tone it down a bit. It feels like a whole album of "Chante's Got a Man" (remember how that song got old real fast?). The album could have been a little better with without all the specific references to her man or love life. Not that I have a problem with someone being in love, but sometimes too much is well - too much. You know how silly someone sounds when all they talk about is their significant other and no matter how you try and change the subject, the conversation somehow goes back to that person. Just kind of makes you want to throw up :-( .
Ok, that being said, the album is missing the vintage Shanice vocals I was so much anticipating. Her last album was 10 times better than this one in my opinion. The highlight of the album was Loving You (which I actually think sounded better on her original remake on her second album). I think Shanice tried to change her style a little and got away from some of the nice ballads I was used to hearing from her. Maybe it's just the songs themselves. I don't particularly think most are very well written. I guess it doesn't matter who sings the song, if the song is bad, it's bad. She sounds great when she sings, but the problem is I don't think she's singing much on the album. A little too much of the sweet sexy bedroom voice and not enough of the singer Shanice. Overall I think after listening to the album a couple of times, you will find yourself skipping over most of it. Because I am so much a fan of Shanice, I can't possibly give her album less than 3 stars, but because the album is so disappointing, I can't see myself giving it more than 3 stars so there you go. If you want to hear great music buy her last album. If you already have it, well go ahead and buy this one, but don't expect it to be wowed by it.

Shanice's Happiness,
By Mikeisha Best (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Every Woman Dreams (Audio CD)
I'm not sure I can find words to describe how much I love Shanice's voice. Her voice is amazing, beautiful, rich and striking. If I was a record company owner, I would sign her under mostly any condition she wanted. That's how much I enjoy her voice. I have been a fan of hers her a very long time, and I've been anticipating her return for quite some time. "Every Woman Dreams" is her comeback album, after a 8-9 year absence from the music industry.
The first time I listened to "Every Woman Dreams", I was not impressed: I must not have given it a good enough listen because it is definitely a solid album. Anyone who listened to this LP would know that Shanice is a devoted wife and mother, and she REALLY loves her family. This album was basically written with them in mind. Shanice did write the material on this album, afterall. Although she wrote some nice words, her lyrics were at their pinnacle when Babyface wrote them. Coincidently, the song I liked least on this record was the one that was released first: the title track. I cannot get into that song. The production is almost unlistenable, Shanice sounds selfish and superficial, and the lyrics are corny. She's talking about how a woman needs to find a man who will buy her Gucci bags and diamond rings. "So Sexy" is a nice dance track. I like the production. The lyrics were alright, but this track overall is an album highlight. The most outstanding song on this album is by far "Forever Like A Rose". Most people who own this album are drawn to it, and I am no exception. Shanice sings this song with such passion and such strong emotion that whoever listens to it can just feel her and what she's attempting to convey. "Chocolate" and "Joy" are clearly about her husband, comedian Flex. "Chocolate" was an overall weak song, with weak instrumentation and corny lyrics, but "Joy" is quite the opposite. This is such a nice song, written just for the love of her life. Her voice is exercised greatly on this track. Speaking of which, Shanice covers Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You" for a second time. She first did this song on her album, "Inner Child". On her more current rendition of "Loving You", her voice sounds more mature and her adlibs are a little different. She did a nice job, again. I enjoyed this album overall. Shanice is one of the most underrated artists in the music industry. I hope that one day she becomes just as exposed at her contemporaries, because vocally, she can give them ALL a run for their money! Mikeisha's Top 5 1. Crazy 4 U 2. Forever Like A Rose 3. That's Why I Love You 4. So Sexy 5. Can't Imagine

This is a black celebrity success story we who enjoy great R&B, as well as,those who appreciate love stories should applaud. Every since I first had the pleasure of hearing "I Love Your Smile",her debut single. I knew that she was a very special young lady and always thought she might get hurt if she attracted the wrong guy because of her ultrasweet persona. Despite the disappointment of her previous relationships, she took her vows with Flex, who is a cool bro, often times hilarious and seems to really appreciate the love they share. This album is dedicated to that union, as well as, her dear friend she mentions on the insert. The writing is incredible, original style about everyday issues but not too complex. That is a difficult task these days. All of the tracks on this joint flow and educate; Shanice has a lot to say, so listen up, listen closely. The intro & outro are so profound. She is really standing her ground and her spoken word technique is elevating. Anyone who really likes good music and not a lot of hype whould appreciate. Two pop/commerical tracks and the remainder are uptempo contemporary R&B with a couple of love ballads. The photo on the back of the insert, where she is setting down spells DIVA. I mean when it is there it always shows. A great formula. And in the words of WENDY WILLIAMS (I believe that is her voice on the interlude) "YOU BETTER GO SHANICE KNOX". Much love to you, Flex and the babies.
Track Ratings 1-lowest 5-highest Intro- I didn't know Shanice had such an incredible spoken-word vocal presence but she shines from the opening and also on the outro. -Get Up- typical pop type single 3.5 -Every Women Dreams- hot, hot, hot, lyrics, vocals superb. 5+ -Things In the Movies- unique and true 5+ -Keep It To Yourself- true, unique, hot track and vocals. 5+ -Take Care Of You- reminds me of Destiny' CHild Cater to U, regardless her vocals, track and melody are just insatiable. 5+ -So Sexy - is definately my least favorite track but I understand she has a track on her for teen appeal sounds alot like a Ciara type track. 3 -That's Why I Love U- I just love the mystic of the track at the beginning just the music plays like a solo before the vocals and then it lays out so smooth--HOT 5+(Flex With Da Magic) -Crazy 4 U- wow a top ten pop single-simple, straight-forward all about love, sang so sweetly 5+ -So Free-Wonderful track and lyrics something just for Shanice and the joy she is feeling for being herself as expressed throughout the song. 5+ -Chocolate- so sweet, special unique, track, hynotic and lyrics -Forever Like a Rose- such a special tribute to he love and an incredible song 5+ -Loving U- classic Minnie Riperton track sung by Shanice beautifully, using that 5 octave range. 5+ -Can't Imagine- another wonderful track expressed only the way a gifted artist like Shanice could do--she is sooooooooo special. -Joy-man, no words can truly express the essence of this song in compliation of all the other songs before it on this project which interconnects with them and is simply why this is such an exceptional R&B project. Shanice is the primary writer on all of these tracks and it is simple a beautiful thing, since these experiences are coming from her heart.5+ (Gifted Writer) -Loving You- She loves that man and that is just that. And we love you, Shanice. Do Your Thing...5+ Outro--Like she says built to last--PUT IT ON BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE BELIEVE.

Wonderfully Consistent and Beautiful,
By Eric Something (Seattle, Wa) - See all my reviews

I have always liked Shanice but felt she rarely recorded great
songs on her past albums. When she did two duets with Kenny Loggins on his "Live At The Redwoods" album, I was so impressed with her that I knew there was so much more to the talent she possessed than her labels were daring her to tap into. On this cd, her true artistry is allowed to shine. From "Sexy Ways" on- every track is just a gem. She has a knack for choosing ballads that have such compelling melody and lyrics to sing. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to hear a complete project. Shanice obviously put a lot of love and care in the execution of this, her best collection of songs to date. |
