Editorial Reviews

Review

“In today’s permissive culture, it is dangerously easy for even the most principled of women to reason away unhealthy thoughts, attitudes, and flirtations with men who aren’t our husbands. In Every Woman’s Battle, Shannon Ethridge bravely and respectfully draws a line in the sand for all of us. A must-read for every woman who desires true intimacy and sexual integrity.”
- Constance Rhodes, author of Life inside the “Thin” Cage

“It’s time to take the blinders off and recognize the crucial message of Every Woman’s Battle.”
- Karen Kingsbury, best-selling author of Remember and One Tuesday Morning

“Many of my Bad Girls of the Bible readers have tearfully confessed to me their struggles with sexual sins – promiscuity, adultery, and self-gratification among them. Since we cannot pretend Christian women don’t face these temptations, it’s a relief to have a sound resource like this one to recommend. Shannon Ethridge’s straightforward, nonjudgmental, step-by-step approach can help women come clean in the best way possible – through an intimate relationship with the Lover of their souls.”
- Liz Curtis Higgs, best-selling author of Bad Girls of the Bible, Really Bad Girls of the Bible, and Mad Mary: A Bad Girl from Magdala. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

When I browsed through this book, I knew right away that I would easily relate to it. And the more I read, the more I could not put it down. Shannon Etheridge delivers a very straight forward, loving message about bringing our lives under full submission to God's will and desire. Having been caught up in my own struggle, I didn't think anybody else was dealing with the same things I was dealing with. But to read the personal stories that Shannon puts in her book really helped me to stop "beating myself up" and realize that I'm not the only one, and there is a way out. The biggest point that stands out to me is that sexual compromise begins in your mind and/or your heart before it manifests anywhere else in your life.

I highly recommend the workbook, just to be able to put your thoughts out there on paper, rather than just bottled up in your mind. If you don't have anybody else to do the workbook with, do it alone. I am doing it that way. I want all I can get to be whole and become the woman I know God designed me to be, and I'm not going to let anything hinder me from that. Regardless of what you have done or what you have been through, God still wants to use you to bring glory to Him. In fact, he tends to pick out those with a "past", and uses them mightily to bring forth testimony of how good He is. I am looking forward to the WHOLE woman that I am on a journey to becoming, and I am thankful for this book, which changed my life, and started the ball rolling for me.

P.S. I am a single, never-been-married 26-year old woman. This book is for us, too!

I read this book just before my first wedding anniversary, and I seriously applied it to my life. The results are amazing!! I have an intimacy with my husband that I never thought I could have, a better image of myself as a result of it, and the chapter on sabbaticals is awesome!! I go up to Door County WI twice a year now and just enjoy alone time with God. This book is very helpful in making you feel that you're not alone out there, that God does provide an answer to every problem, and that He will never give you more than what you can handle.

I haven't finished the book yet, but it is an awesome book! Ethridge recognizes the fact that women also struggle with sexual integrity, and brings into the open many of the secrets that women world-wide have been ashamed to be accountable for.
I appreciate her down-to-earth manner, and she gives many helpful ideas and Biblical counsel on how to overcome sexual temptation. Read the book, if you are struggling, if you know someone who is struggling, or even just for your own furthered knowledge.
I highly recommend it!

Finally, there is a brave Christian woman out there that will talk about this subject! It's about time women get real about their sexual struggles and stop looking for love in all the wrong places. I found this book to be insightful, captivating, and full of practical application. It's thrust is towards personal wholeness and fulfillment... with or without a man! Great stuff!!! Have fun reading about her personal journey told with refreshing honesty.

I found this book to be excellent in examining women's hearts. Several times, women's struggle with lust is overlooked or underestimated. The author did a wonderful job in discussing different forms of being unfaithful besides physically, such as emotionally. I highly recommend this book to women who are married or in relationships. It vaguely discusses subjects for single women, but not clearly enough to really be able to understand where boundaries need to be drawn. I would also advise that single women struggling with lust, avoid reading chapter 10. Although it may be helpful when you are married, reading descriptions about God's glorious plan of sex isn't helpful for someone who is trying to overcome lust. Overall, the book was well written from a female perspective and contains a lot of helpful information for understanding yourself and significant other.

I didn't want to read this book. Even halfway through I thought this was good info, but not for me to apply right now in my life. I just didn't want to. By the time I got to the end I was deeply thankful and ready to pursue the intimate relationship God wants to have with me above my self-indulgent thought life. I love how she writes - it's so down to earth, uncondemning, and convicting. I'm so bless to have "chanced" upon this read. `Wish more women new about it - we need to address our own purity battle. God really is praised through this book - the Maker of romance, love and true intimacy.

Shannon Ethridge's book Every Woman's Battle: Discovering God's Plan for Sexual and Emotional Fulfillment is just one of the Every Man Series you have no doubt seen or heard about. The book contains 12 chapters broken up into 3 parts and a workbook in the back for further study. Basing much of the work off her own struggle for sexual purity, she brings out several key points in her book that I particularly liked.

men are not the only ones involved in a battle for sexual integrity
women may not struggle with pornography to the same degree as men, but some explicit romance novels leave them just as guilty
women need to guard their minds and emotions from leading them down a path into an affair
allowing ourselves to compare our husbands with the other men around is a dangerous practice
women need to set up boundaries to help protect their marriage
God desires a close, personal relationship with every believer - and that is ultimate fulfillment

While she had many more "good points," I found it difficult to follow her line of reasoning throughout the book as a whole. I often disagreed with her and sometimes felt her concepts were more pragmatic than Biblical (and maybe even contradicting herself in parts of the book, though not intending to).

She wrote in one part of the book about steps to take after realizing you have fallen into an emotional affair. As part of the steps, she never makes it a necessity to confess the sin to your husband. However, later in the book she seems to make it clear that this is a necessary step, at least when confessing sinful relationships that happened before you were married. Again, she never laid the Biblical foundation at the beginning, so it is no wonder that things get a little confusing.
