3.0 out of 5 stars Better for women with excess conditions than deficient ones
John Christopher was one of the last Thompsonians, using heroic herbal remedies and focusing on constipation, while today I am more likely to run into clients with loose stools. His food recommendations will probably work for those who are robust, excess types but should not be followed by. say. thin vegetarians who run cold. One size does not fit all. Cayenne is a...

5.0 out of 5 stars It really is EVERY woman's herbal!, June 12, 2004
This review is from: Every Woman's Herbal (Hardcover)
From puberty to menopause and everything in between, just as the title says, this book is EVERY woman's herbal.

Three years after Dr. Christopher died, his family found a manuscript he had been working on for a woman's herbal. So with the help Dr. Christopher's friend Cathy Gileadi, it was completed and published. Cathy's writing style is wonderfully entertaining and easy to read. There are personal stories entertwined with the information that make it more interesting.

For such a small book, it is literally bursting with valuable herbal information. Naturally it covers puberty, pms, pregnancy, birth, and menopause, but it also covers other aliments such as flu, multiple sclerosis, gallstones, cysts, asthma, vision trouble, diabetes, hair loss, deafness, pyorrhea, weight problems, osteoporosis, headaches, emotional health, yeast infection, urinary infection, heart disease, and allergies. There is also a chapter on first aid. Indeed, this is more that a woman's herbal, in many ways it's a family herbal.

I own several herb books, but my copy of "Every Woman's Herbal" is well worn because I refer to it frequently. When my daughters reach puberty they will each receive their own copy, which we will read and discuss together.

Whether your 'herbal library' consists of two books or twenty, it will not be complete without this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for Amateurs in Homeopathic Medicine., March 11, 2000
This review is from: Every Woman's Herbal (Hardcover)
I have a great interest in homeopathic medicine and I really wanted to put natural healing into practice in my home, but I had no idea where to start. A friend recommended this book, and it is excellent. Dr. Christopher takes herbs and natural healing and applies them to every stage of a woman's life, from puberty (I wish I'd have discovered natural healing and this book as an adolescent), to childbearing age, to menopause. This book doesn't just list different herbs and what they are used for; it gives you the nitty-gritty how-to information on making tinctures, infusions, ointments, decoctions, etc, and how often to take them for a certain ailment. There are also interesting case studies throughout the whole book that make for a very satisfying, page-turning read. Anyone who is planning a homebirth would benefit from the chapters on pregnancy, birth, and the newborn. The information from the chapters can be used to make a very thorough to-do list before the arrival of a new baby.

Hats off to Dr. Christopher and Cathy Gileadi for a wonderful treasury of herbal remedies and natural treatments.

Cayenne is a great circulatory stimulant, but I'd rather use cinnamon. Still he knew a lot. I would rather use Ann McIntyre or Amanda McQuade Crawford who are more up to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, August 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Every Woman's Herbal (Hardcover)
I am glad to have this in my library. It is very helpful as well as encouraging that some amazing results can be gained with the use of herbs. I had borrowed this from a friend and was so happy to find it here.

If you know nothing about herbal use, you may not be pleased with this book as most of it is stories. There are no clear 'do this exactly' instructions, so for the beginner, you may feel a bit lost regarding dosages sometimes. For those who are not fearful to jump in or have some experienece, you will manage just fine.

As you progress on your journey of herbal knowledge, you will find that it is an art as well as a variable thing based on the person, the needs and the herbs available.

There are not enough herbal books that address the real things most of use want to know; does it work and what about for extreme cases? The contents of this book will leave no doubt about the power of the therapeutic use of herbs.
By the way, if you are really not sure how to make the herbs/formulas mentioned in the book, you can find them for sell on-line. I do not work for Dr. Christopher's organization but have found in my years working in alternative medicine, that these products are quality and well researched.
