Praise for Every Young Man’s Battle

“Every Young Man’s Battle does the best job I have ever seen on the subject
of sexual temptation. Once upon a time we lived in a world that didn’t talk
about secrets, and that world has brought us to the mess we are in today.
Young men must have an honest, blunt, and unashamedly Christian look
at their sexuality. This book will save thousands of future marriages.”
—Jim Burns, president, YouthBuilders

“I have never read a book as direct and open as Every Young Man’s Battle.
The profound principles communicate the authors’ personal experiences
and provide the hope that anyone can overcome a day-to-day battle with
impure thoughts. Every Young Man’s Battle helps you see the importance of
taking control over your eyes, your mind, and your heart so that you can
completely honor God in every facet of your life.”
—Scott Bullard, of musical recording group Soul Focus

“It’s encouraging to see some real men stand up and sound the alarm to
young men. Stephen, Fred, and Mike’s courage to tell their stories exposes
what has unfortunately become a dirty little secret among men in the
church. The battle cry of the day is for men of all ages to live a pure and
holy life, and this book will crush Satan’s strategy by giving the troops the
guts to talk about what has been taboo in the church for so long. The
authors’ poignant stories paint a picture of battle in which all men can
relate and offer hope and camaraderie to win the war.”
—Troy Vanliere, artist/manager (representing NewSong,
Carolyn Arends, Soul Focus, Jadyn Strand, and Glad)

“There has been a gaping void in the search for holiness, and Every Young
Man’s Battle addresses those issues where others have been comfortably
silent. If there is even a spark of desire for purity in your life, this book will
kindle that fire… It is possible to walk in victory, as you will surely find out
after reading the Every Man series.”
—Matt Butler, of musical recording group NewSong

THis book will help win the battle.

This book is simply no respite from the endless drumbeat of depraved sexuality in culture, and it is a disgusting and gratuitous sexuality at that.

This book is poison. I have to characterize it that way because it is so crude and unnecessarily graphic in places that I can't possibly recommend that someone read it despite it containing some kernels of truth and good advice. It's inappropriate for a man of any age. And I write this not as someone who is unexposed to the world, but rather as an attorney who has represented rapists, child abusers and molesters. This book is simply no respite from the endless drumbeat of depraved sexuality in culture, and it is a disgusting and gratuitous sexuality at that. For instance, did the author need to tell us how he learned about masturbation? And how to do it? Including lubricant? Also, did the author need to burden us by telling us by name who his favorite centerfold was? (I keep asking myself--what if that woman is/becomes a Christian? Why has he perpetuated her shame for others to read?) The graphic nature of the text is unbelievably bad. Truly awful. Toward the end of the book there are some kernels of truth, but the balance of the book is so outrageous and unbiblical in its graphic depictions that I could never, ever recommend that a Christian or non-Christian alike read this book. The authors have a lot of emotional and spiritual growing up to do before they put books like this in the marketplace. I won't project bad intentions onto the authors, but I will categorically say that their execution is an epic spiritual fail. Mothers, and even fathers, may think that this is the 'strong medicine' that needs to be administered to sons who are caught up in pornography or sexual activity. It is not. This is not the only way to communicate with a young person.Read more ›

This subject matter appears to be written for the young men 16 to 35. For ages younger than 16 I would consider this presentation a high risk for undesirable behavior.

Every Young Man's Battle is a no nonsense book that goes way beyond all of the usual ideas for sexual purity for young and old men alike. It is full of very direct, real world help for any man's struggles with what he sees every day. This book does not shy away from the subjects of masturbation, pornography, and girls and women who dress without enough clothes. (Mothers afraid of teaching your boys about too much of the world's truths, think again and get this book!)This book will give a guy a list of concrete things to do to keep himself out of trouble and moving on a path of healthy, happy living without the overwhelming feelings associated with being addicted to thoughts of sex or the guilt associated with these subjects. This book would be a good choice for any man and is an excellent choice for a single man of any age. (It is also good for young ladies as a help to show them what they are doing when they wear too little and to show them the way men think.---My 17 yr old daughter read this, too! Parental guidance advised for girls though, as it is a bit over the top for our feminine sensibilities and it could easily scare a girl a bit or make her conclude that all men are somewhat 'sick', which isn't the point of it all). As a parent of 5 boys, 3 girls and 'in law' children, too, I highly recommend this book.

Other books I recommend on this or similar subjects are:

did not like the book which my husband tried to use to teach young men, it was too graphic and caused more problems with lust than it solved

Lust, most assuredly, is a problem for men who struggle to please Christ in their lives. In a faith that says God created men and women as equals, it can be especially damaging for women to be treated like passive objects for the man's sexual satisfaction. The authors of "Every Young Man's Battle" start out with the commendable goal of addressing the dehumanizing evils inherent in pornography and lust, and to be sure, some of their advice to the younger male generation is very good. Toward the end, Fred Stoeker writes to the boys who potentially would date his daughter, telling them to look at things from his point of view as a father. His encouragement to "carry her honor" and to treat her with respect stuck with me for a long time after I read the book, and can still help encourage me to not lust after women. And through the earlier chapters, there are some jewels of wisdom for the discerning Christian to pick up. "Bouncing the eyes" might work for men who find their lust out-of-control, and it is good to be reminded that Paul's instruction that we "must have not even a hint of sexual immorality."

Unfortunately, this book crashes into the same mountainside that has ended the good potential for many other romance/sex books aimed at younger Christians ("I Kissed Dating Goodbye" being one egregious example): Legalism. Specifically, this is legalism bred by the authors' own preconceptions. Their specific experiences and beliefs are stretched too far, turned into supposedly "Biblical" commands that Scripture simply does not give or imply.

By far the most prominent bias is against the young man's sex drive. The writers briefly acknowledge that sex and the human sex drive are gifts from God, and can be holy in the context of marriage.
