Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* This delightful tour of Paris begins, “When in Paris, everybody bonjours.” The refrain is repeated as a little girl and her family hear that welcome, “From shores. In stores. On guided tours.” The cheery ink-and-watercolor artwork is stylishly rendered. McMenemy sometimes places her characters in spaces of white that highlight them against quintessentially French backgrounds. (An architectural key on the endpapers identifies sites from the Eiffel Tower to the Paris Zoo.) Throughout, the brief rhymes are tightly rendered but cleverly worded, and they work perfectly in tandem with the art, giving youngsters a solid idea of what treats await them in Paris, should they be lucky enough to visit. A clever ending shows what happens when the little girl and her teddy bear fly back to the States. Those who have been paying close attention will be delighted by the presence on the plane of the small mouse, who has followed the family in and around Paris, and has now managed to find its way to the U.S. Très bien! Preschool-Grade 2. --Ilene Cooper

Starred Review, Publishers Weekly, March 24, 2008:
"Kids may well demand to be taken to the nearest passport office after finishing this light-as-a-soufflé salute to the City of Lights."

Starred Review, Booklist, August 1, 2008:
“The brief rhymes are tightly rendered but cleverly worded, and they work perfectly in tandem with the art.”

More About the Author

The very first word I learned to read was A-L-L. It was particularly appropriate because from the joyful moment I got my first library card, my goal was to read every single book in the children's section. Books were magical to me. I still feel that way.

When I was in college in a small New England town, a young woman came to speak as part of an alumni career day. She lived in the unknown, glamorous, and slightly intimidating New York City. She talked about her career as an editor at a publishing house where, she told us, she got to read books all day long.

It was one of those aha! moments. After graduation, I moved to New York City and began my publishing career. I spent many happy years as a children's book editor at various publishing houses. It took me a while to get used to reading on the job; at first, anytime someone walked by my desk, I'd guiltily try to hide my reading material. Then I'd remember that I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing! The more I read on the job, the more I realized I wanted to write my own books. After a few false starts, my first book, Frannie's Fruits, was published in 1989.

Eventually, I became the senior editor and writer for Sesame Street Magazine, where I stayed for many years. I now work part-time as an editor at Sesame Street Books and the rest of the time from home as a freelance writer and editor.

I live in a small town outside New York City, where my husband and I have brought up two children and two dogs. I still read everything I can get my hands on--and write stories and poems that, I hope, help introduce children to the magic of books.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun book for kids December 29, 2008

my little girl was asking for this book nonstop after we had to return it to the library, so i had to order it. she loves to look at the pictures and will recite the words on every other page after i read one of the pages. she has also started finding the "small pictures" on one page where it talks about the Paris attractions and then searches the book until she finds the "big picture" that it corresponds to. she loves the book. and it's fun to read to her.

Leslie Kimmelman's EVERYBODY BONJOURS! offers up a set of basic French words and fun, uplifting stories to go with them as an easy introduction to French culture and language. From a guided tour to a Parisian crowd, bonjour is the word of the moment in this very simple and fun picturebook exploration.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Cute Story January 6, 2009
By Shane
Format:Hardcover
This story is a fantastic little romp through Paris. Keep in mind that this book is not focused on teaching a second language (the only used French vocabulary is "Bonjour"). Yet it does expose children to the sights, sounds, and excitement of Paris. The artwork and story line are entertaining and educational. I love the epilogue at the end that highlights some of the locations and attractions Paris has to offer. All in all, a great book!
