4.0 out of 5 stars everybody, come listen to this record, May 24, 2009
By
steve (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
The Pomegranates second full release shows the band maturing with fuller, more developed songwriting. Their sound is similar to the first release, which is somewhere between the Afro beats of Vampire Weekend and the melodic experimentation of Los Campesinos. This is very good indie rock. Interesting narrative across this release, which deserves to be listened to from start to finish. Everybody Come Outside and Svaatzi Uutsi are stand out tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars St. Louis Loves Pomegranates!!!, January 30, 2010
By
S.E.W. (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Everybody Come Outside (Dig) (Audio CD)
I win tickets to shows on a regular basis by listening religiously to KDHX 88.1 community radio in St. Louis. Off Broadway bar and music club is close to my house, non-smoking and has great acoustics-three big reasons for me to go. After winning free tix to see The Pomegranates that first time even before Everything is Alive even came out, I was hooked! They added a fourth reason to go. I have since seen them at least three other times and they are simply put-FANTASTIC! From their debut EP, Two Eyes through their latest Everybody Come Outside these boys, from their mostly unassuming stage presence, offbeat-never-boring drums, simple-yet-extremely-catchy chord progressions to the fact that they always look like they're really are having fun make the whole package a reason to buy not only E.C.O. but their whole catalog thus far. Two-Eyes is simple, jangly, clap-your-hands-sing-la-la la-feel-good pop rock. Everything is Alive brings more of the same if not a little more grown-up and E.C.O. shows even more facial hair. Coriander and Tesseract are on repeat. Sometimes I Feel Like I'm a Million Years old is a little on the long side but will be a niche song for certain activities. I can't wait for The Pom's next release and wish them a long, prolific career. Thank you Pomegranates for enhancing my live music, house cleaning and general feel-good vibe making! S.E.W. St. Louis, MO.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting second album, July 11, 2009
This review is from: Everybody Come Outside (Dig) (Audio CD)
Indie-music band Pomegranates formed in 2006 and after an initial EP in 2007, they released their debut album "Everything Is Alive" in May, 2008. It showed a pormising band still trying to find itself, although there were a number of very nice highlights on the album. Now, less than a year later, already comes the second album of Pomegranates.

"Everybody Come Outside" (11 tracks; 48 min.) immediately feels stronger and more confident that the debut album. The title track kicks things off very nicely, and is followed by an equally appealing "Beachcomber". "The Southern Ocean" reminds me of latter-days Talking Heads for some reason. "Corriander" is my favorite track on the album, with great guitar work. The 13 min. pensive "I Feel Like I'm a Million Years Old", with its long instrumental outro, is a beautiful way to close off the album. In all, "Everybody Come Outside" is quite a step forward from "Everything Is Alive".

I can't help but point out that Pomegranates hail from where I live, Cincinnati, which has become ground zero for a growing number of indie-buzz bands like Bad Veins (debut album out later this month), Wussy, Buffalo Killers, Lions Rampant, You You're Awesome, The Sundresses, and many more. Very exciting and vibrant indie-rock scene here in Cincinnati. I've seen Pomegranates perform a number of times around town in the last couple of years, and they have steadily gotten stronger as a live band. Finally, if you wonder where you can here these guys, check out internet-only WOXY (Bam! The Future of Rock and Roll), bringing the best indie-rock in the country, bar none.
