Nice photography thanks to a professional photographer. As for the content itself... Ms. Kurotaki left me wondering exactly why I bothered buying this book. When the description said the book contained columns and photos I figured it would have a decent amount of information. I am a costume designer and enjoy checking out other people's work to expand horizons.

However, when the book arrived I was quite disappointed. Each costume has 2 short paragraphs of text with it. The first is information about the character and why she likes her/him. The second paragraph is about "making the costume" which contains vague phrases like, "This costume required a lot of fabric," (about her Chun Li costume).

Furthermore, some of the costumes failed to impress me. Some she made, some she bought, some she did not make at all (just modeled). Don't be expecting her to provide tips and tricks on how she made certain things or even what fabric she used.

Bottomline: If you're looking for a photobook of Jan Kurotaki in costumes, go for it. If you're looking for a helpful book for cosplay... pass this by.

The book cover says it all. Jan Kurotaki, cosplayer, Newtype USA columnist, manga author, video game designer, and fashion model, has been cosplaying for ten years. In this book is many of the photos and columns from Newstype USA. Each section has a few pages of photos of the same costume and two paragraphs, one explaining the costume and one explaining the characters. She gives tips of keeping down the costs, what material to use and how to wear the outfits. Note: Some outfits you don't want to move too fast in, you may flash somebody. Some of the outfits are cute, some are sexy, some she is even crossplaying - cosplaying as a male character. Some of the outfits she wears JUST for fun. A must for any manga, cosplay, anime library.

This book is mainly just a reprint of Jan Kurotaki's articles from the now defunct NewType USA Magazine. There are a few that weren't published in the magazine, but not many.

The articles aren't really even articles though, each costume has about one or two paragraphs about why Jan likes the character and how she made the costume... but she doesn't really truly get into how she made the costume at all. She may gloss over how she chose a fabric or how she picked out some tights, but that's about it. The title of the book really should be Jan Kurotaki's Cosplay... not "Everybody Cosplay". It doesn't help others cosplay in the text and it really only focuses on photos of her. She didn't even make a lot of the costumes. She's a pretty girl, seems nice, many of the costumes are pretty and the photos nice enough. But even there the book fails a little as some of the photo resolution is too low and some of the photos show up grainy.

If you're looking for a book with a variety of cosplay pinup-style photos, then you might enjoy this. But I think you'd be better off just surfing online or picking up a copy of COSMODE.

If you're a cosplayer looking to learn more about how to cosplay well... you'll be very disappointed with this book.

This is a book that has pictures of Jan's various cosplays. You aren't going to find patterns, tips, tricks, websites, etc. here. 95% pics, 5% text. She talks about why she likes the character that she cosplays, but mostly it's about looking a cool cosplay pics. If you need some reference images of some costumes, or just wanna look at some then you need to buy it.

When I first started seeing Jan Kurotaki's cosplay columns in Newtype USA, I was interested, thinking that a cosplay guide by a proclaimed "professional cosplayer" to a sewing n00b like myself would be a great way to learn and improve. I was quickly disappointed as I discovered that this diva's tricks were more flash than substance.

I learned that she does not make most of her costumes--she is more of a model than a seamstress. The ones she claims to have made in this book have very sketchy details about them, making it absolutely impossible to gain any real sort of sewing insight on them. Some of them--her Rozen Maiden one in particular--even have safety pins showing. Some of her costumes bear little to no resemblance to the characters they are supposed to represent. Her Yuuko Ichihara from CLAMP's xxxHOLiC in particular is a complete hack job, only the basic dress is completed but she lists it as 'finished.'

The worst part of this book is the title. "Everybody" is certainly an ego-centric word for a book that stars only one woman, especially one who isn't really a stellar example of everything a cosplayer CAN be. She's not an exceptional seamstress, she's an average model, and she's a very poor writer. Unless you find Ms. Kurotaki to be attractive, this book is definitely one to pass up.

Its not what I thought it would be, I figured it would have given me pointers on cosplay, but all it was; was a series of boring pictures. I was disapointed.
