Not all I hoped for...,

I bought this book on the recommendation of the well-trained mind for PreK/K. I was disappointed, even though I had looked at the table of contents before I bought it. I had forgotten to look at a sample of the actual lessons. I was hoping for a lot more active activities for the senses that would be PreK oriented and easy for a homeschooling mom. This book isn't that. Slow and Steady Get Me Ready really covers all the things this book does--in a much easier way for me to do with my kids.

I purchased this as a science curriculum for my homeschooled kindergartener. Granted, there aren't many preschool/kindergarten science curricula out there. I based it on SWB's rec in the Well Trained Mind. This is written for pre-school teachers with many children, not homeschoolers with only one or two children. Most activities are set up for a group, and must be adapted. Not all needed materials are easily obtained items - one activity requires you to "borrow" x-rays of broken bones from a dr's office. (you can probably find pictures of them online - but that's not what the lesson says.)
We're doing some of the activities - and I've ordered "real science 4kids" pre-level 1 chemistry. (which I only learned about after ordering this book.)

As a homeschooling family to several different age groups this book provides easy to adjust activities for the entire elementary age range.

OK, not great,

This is definitely a classroom book. That said, it will be somewhat useful homeschooling my two oldest (pre-K, and K next year). The science is very basic, moreso than I would have liked. It does provide a nice starting place, though, which is often what I need. The activity ideas are fun, and I can always add to the information and complexity.
All in all, I am certainly glad that I bought this book used and very inexpensively (total with shipping was around $4.50). I think I will get my money's worth, but not if I had bought it new... |
