5.0 out of 5 stars You are guaranteed a Good Time listening to this., December 13, 2000

This collection encompasses the superb output of one of soul music's legends. Very few artists of this genre outside of the Tamla Motown stable could ever conceivably put together anything to rank with it. Major Lance is able to capture the full range of emotion with his voice backed up with excellent orchestral arrangements mainly thanks to the writing of Curtis Mayfield. In my experience as a Northern Soul collector, I should make comment on the tracks that I particularly find of interest.

These are, "Investigate", "You Don't Want Me No More", "It's The Beat", "Ain't No Soul" and of course, "Everybody Loves A Good Time". In their heyday these tracks especially were the standard by which other dance music was measured. Even almost 35 years on they still find a way on to most modern soul D.J. playlists. I recommend this collection to anybody with any interest in what is surely the epitome of "good old soul". You will not only have a Good Time, you will have a GREAT time!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Major Lance "best of"`, April 11, 2000
This review is from: Everybody Loves a Good Time: Best of Major Lance (Audio CD)
This record is an excellent example of some of the early work that is the heart and soul of everything since. This man has a clean, clean voice and the instrumental work is classic. If you want to know where good music comes from listen to The Monkey Time and Um Um...gives me goosebumps.

5.0 out of 5 stars I grew up listening to this music, May 8, 2000
This review is from: Everybody Loves a Good Time: Best of Major Lance (Audio CD)
These soul classics bring back great memories for me because this was family music. I grew up along with my brothers and sisters, friends and relatives listening to this music and times were good. When I left home to join the Army, my music scattered to the winds with my younger brothers and sisters. It is great to find this almost forgotten music!

Its hard to believe what good music really sounded like until I once again came across Major Lance. It reminds me of that saturday nite at the famous hangout with all the guys/girls hanging out. You could hear the music from the car radio while eating french fries at the local hamburg hangout. Wow...miss those days !

I had the fortunate opportunity to see Major Lance, Dee Clark,
James Brown & the Famous Flames, Ike & Tina Turner, and the list
can go on and on at the Royal Theater on Pennsylvania Ave. in Baltimore, Maryland in the the late fifties, early sixties. I remember going almost every afternoon after school to see the movie matinees and later on in the evening, Major Lance and the above mentioned singers along with countless others would put on what were called stage shows (not concerts) two and three times a night. I definitely remember the voice of Major Lance with all the distinct clarity in the way he sang. My favorite is "Mama didn't know" followed by several well known all time classics, most of which were written by the great Curtis Mayfield. A definite must for a music buff of this genre.
