Simply The Best,
By Matthew (Chico, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Everybody Makes Mistakes (Audio CD)
I am a Starflyer 59 fan, and have been ever since I picked up the Silver cd on a whim. I listened in awe, and went on to so far obtain Americana and the Fell In Love At 22 ep, along with this album. I'm soon to get Gold and The Fashion Focus. Out of the four cd's I have, this one would rank at the top. I love everything Jason Martin does, but this definitely makes my jaw drop to my knees. Perfectly blending modern noise, fifties balads, surf music, and serious musical talent, this is the kind of cd you can listen to 100 times in a row and hear something new every time, then you can listen to it another 100 times because you love it so much. Get it now 10/10.

Amazing,

This is my first Starflyer 59 CD, and I was amazed by the creativity displayed by Jason Martin and Starflyer. On the first song, "Play the C Chord", I liked the way the mood of the song just changed in the verse to chorus transition. The next track, "No New Kinda Story", was also one of my favorites, with its simple but somewhat driving beat. The techno-like keyboard textures in the background were cool, too. "20 Dollar Bills" had a unique blend of harp and fuzzy distorted guitar. "No More Shows", my second favorite song, reminded me of the Beatles with distortion. "Just Try" and "My Name" were more mellow, cool songs that were enjoyable, despite their mellowness. "Dethroned King" was my favorite song, with its sad, loud riff. "Going Places" is a dreamy song that I always kind of miss because of the mesmerized state the previous track always leaves me in. The last song, "The Party", is a slow moving, dreamy song that kind of leaves you feeling half asleep, half awake. The hidden track is a jazzy, saxophone led song. Also, don't forget to listen for the slide guitar that accents many of the songs. Get this album, whether you're a Starflyer 59 fan or not. Prepare yourself to be mesmerized.

One of the best!,
This review is from: Everybody Makes Mistakes (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite SF59 albums. Americana is probably my favorite, but this is a close second. SF59 fans all know exactly their favorite song frome each SF59 album and this gives fans some good ones to choose from. The best is probably Play the C Chord and No New Kind of Story. Those two songs alone make it worth it.

Best Modest Band,

This review is from: Everybody Makes Mistakes (Audio CD)
I first saw Sf59 at a Church in O.C. CA back in 95, back when their feedback noise made you say " what? what? after the shows. I'm glad to see that this band matured from psychedelic disortion to a more clean sound. "Everybody Makes Mistakes" combines styles of surf rock, 80's new wave with a hint of punk/alternative roots. Martin's voice is calm, melodic and laid back. Highly recommeded for U2 and 80's new wave listeners who love that 80's "twangy" sound. This album was well recorded, their all time best. Songs like " play the C chord and "No new kinda story" are rock perfections. Get it!

They always improve!,

This is Starflyer's greatest album, and they just get better everytime. This one is the greatest departure from the massive feedback and heavy guitars of silver and gold era. Now the songs are very melodic, each with its own distinction. Some have great deep, clanging bass, while others have strings and piano arrangements. The Party is one of my favorits, because it is just a swirl of melodic piano and strings, and is a perfect end to the album. No new kind of story is also great, with a bass line that makes you feel like you're flying somewhere, it's a great song to play while driving. I would describe the music as dreamy, with Jason's great low vocals that make you feel like you're half asleep-half awake, and sort of flying through the clouds. Very Very relaxing, this album can make you forget the problems of the day. Overall a masterpiece. Everyone should own this.

simply incredible,

Well, how should I start this review? I've followed Starflyer since 94. I bought the Silver album the day it came out. Starflyer instantly became my favorite band, and Hazel Would is still my favorite song of all time. I've watched Jason's music evolve on every release (aside from the Drop, which i had the chance to buy and didnt - man, its tough being a complete jackass) and have not been dissappointed yet. Actually, I've been nothing less than elated on every release, and Everybody Makes Mistakes is no exception. I'm hesitant to say that its Starflyer's finest, but this is definitely their most well crafted album. No New Kinda Story is fabulous. This is easily the most incredible pop song created in the past 15 years. It follows in the enormous footsteps of Modern English, New Order, and the Smiths. Starflyer is getting pop-ier. But the moodiness hasnt left yet, and with this release there are no signs of it leaving anytime soon. Album of the year? I'm not sure but it definitely hits my top 3. I just dont know if I want to replace the Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin as number one. Anyhow, Starflyer 59 proves once again they are incredible artists and it's just too bad the only public awareness has been through audio clips on the Real World on MTV.

This is a great album. It does have a kinship with "Fashion Focus," but it also has a definite sound of its own. These are not leftover songs by any means.
Note especially the influence from Gene Eugene which is heaviest during "My Name." Also note the song "Dethroned King," which at once hearkens back to the glory of "Gold," and looks forward to "Old." My goodness it's a good song. My only complaint about this album is the hidden track at the end of "Party." Sounds like my favorite band is channeling Kenny G. Ah well. Five stars anyway.

Well, here is the latest SF59 album. Fabbo! I loved it so much that I didn't get much sleep the night it came in. Martin expands on the sound that he has formulated over the past 6 years of pur-d pop! His recent blending of magic guitars, funny synths, background singers, and thunder noises makes the hardiest SF59 fan shudder to think that that much talent can come from one fella. Much of the differences in the new album come from the very beat-driven tracks and even the complete absence of drums at all, check it out 4 yer' self. I now have most of his stuff, and I enjoy each CD/Vinyl for their own strenghts. Jason Marin's music has matured and changed over the past few years and is going in new directions that are just plain delish! Thanx to Jason, Jeff, Wayne and Gene for the music and Folgers for the caffine!WE WANT SIX STARS!

everytime i think that there is no way that starflyer could get any better, or do anything more innovative while still keeping the same edge, i'm wrong. this album is simply incredible from the first to the last song. this album has something for everyone - even people who don't like his earlier stuff. for new fans and old fans alike! if i could give it more stars i would.

i love this band, Jason Martin does a great job of song writing. You have to love this band, the way they have the droning guitar, the fuzzy backround noises, all of it make it great. My favorite song is "no new kinda story" I love the way he blended the orchestrated music in with the band. A must have!
