Satisfying Screwball Comedy,
By A Customer
This review is from: Everybody Sing [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Your liking for this film will rather depend on your liking for classic 1930's "screwball comedy," which is generally characterized by eccentric characters, absurd situations, and wildly over-the-top performances. When a theatrical family faces financial ruin, their youngest daughter (recently expelled from school for daring to "swing" the classics) undercuts her family's wishes by attempting to find work on the stage. The result is delightful hilarity, with a very young Judy Garland showing a fine sense of comedy and brilliantly supported by such neurotic character actors as Billie Burke and Fannie Brice. Funny, unexpectedly sophistocated, and wildly unpredictable!

A weak plot, yet one of Garland's best comedic roles!,

This review is from: Everybody Sing [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Though the critics aren't too thilled with this one (who said critics know what they're talking about? A must-see for true Judy fans)I really enjoyed it! Judy sings some spactacular songs and shines through the weak plot. A very good cast and Billie Burke is especially hair brained in this one! Judy starts the picture by being thrown out of school for singing swing and pushes her nose up against the glass on a door! Also look for delightful paring of Judy and Fanny Brice as Little Lord Fauntleroy & Baby Snooks. It's wonderful!

Why Sing When You Can Swing?,
This review is from: Everybody Sing [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Everybody Sing is the story of an insane family (all somehow involved in show business, which makes them a bit eccentric). The youngest daughter of the family (Judy Garland), has been expelled from four schools due to her intense adoration for jazz and swing music. She has a right to; that is the type of music she excells at singing, and we get to hear a lot of it. Her parents just don't understand, so they attempt to send her away again, but she escapes so she can join a musical describing her own feelings on music.
Judy Garland is wonderful here in a very early part where her eyebrows are still plucked down and her body has not been restrained to make her look younger. Despite how different she looks, her personality and voice shine through and prove that even at this young age, Judy was a force to be reckoned with. All of her songs are sung with heart, even the one she performs in blackface, and each song is so good it is a shame it is not better known. Fanny Brice makes a rare film appearance here as Olga, the housekeeper for the family. She is wry, intelligent, and very funny throughout. She also makes an appearance in a few musical numbers that show off her abilities as a comedienne which were made famous on the Ziegfeld stage. Overall, this is a very fun film filled with good musical numbers and a great cast.

Swing it!,

This review is from: Everybody Sing [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Sometimes I wonder why I enjoy these kind of movies so much. They were really just vehicles for Judy Garland. MGM was shoving her in the public's face, hoping to make her popular. But what can I say? They did it!Although the plot is not the best, the cast makes it believable. Billie Burke is the addled, at times hysterical matron who is to star in a play her husband is writing. Allan Jones is Ricky, the prince charming in the guise of a cook. Fanny Brice is the saucy, clever Russian maid, Olga. (Watch for rare footage of Fanny Brice as "Baby Snooks.") And, of course, there's Judy Garland as the ugly duckling daughter who uses her talent for singing to save her parents' crumbling relationship. Complete with great songs and so many unforgettable lines, "Everybody Sing" is a joyful, boisterous comedy you'll want to watch a second and third time.

Fine Musical,

This review is from: Everybody Sing [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I used to be crazy about Judy Garland, I collected most of movies she is in. Everybody loves "Wizard of Oz", of course I love it too, but take a look "Everybody Sing". This is the real Judy I think. "Wizard of Oz" is a great movie but there is not Judy Garland there is Drothy, you see.
Judy Garland is a great entertainer and this movie is the best to see such her talent in her early days and also co-staring is very nice. I don't know Fanny Brice's performance very well but she was like born to make people laugh. The story is as cheap as classical musical usually is, but the musical sean is so wounderful. My favorite seans are which Judy sings Mendelssohn with swing rhythm, or which Judy sing a blues in an audition for restrant with black-face like Al Jolson, or which in a bus sean Judy and other casts sing "Down". Oh my god! I saw it almost 10 years ago but I still remember all detail!! If you are Judy's fan, don't miss it!

Judy Garland, the greatest entertainer of all times!!!!!!!!,

I just finished watching "Everybody Sing", and could not believe that I have lived for 32 years and had never seen this one before. Judy is simply amazing. The story line almost is silly at times with it's comical scenes, but the whole movie is worth the buy to witness Judy's amazing talent. The Swing Low, Sweet Chariot piece had me mesmerized. I had to rewind the tape several times to just watch Judy perform. What an actress, singer, dancer, and an overall entertainer. If you love Judy, you will not be disappointed in this one, then of course I have never been disappointed in anything she was in, even when the story lines lacked, Judy never did.

I love this film it's sweet and happy and it will cheer you up.It was intended as a vehicle for Judy Garland therefore you see alot of her in it. I thought the songs were good and it did well when it came out back in 1938. Judy Garland looks plumpa nd childlike, so sweet you just want to eat her.lol no seriously you will enjoy it, not just saying that b/c I'm a major Judy fan Its a grand old film!

Unsung musical gem,
By Sara Brideson "A Melancholy Idealist" (Sacramento, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Everybody Sing (DVD)
Although this might be considered a run of the mill 1930s musical, it's really worth the time, not only because it's Judy Garland's first real starring role in a musical film. The film features many catchy tunes including "Down on Melody Farm", "Swing Mr. Mendhelsson", and "Why? Because". For anyone who is an avid 1930s MGM movie fan, there are dozens of character actors that are readily recognizable. Reginald Owen as Judy's blow hard father, Reginald Gardiner as a pompous actor, Billie Burke as Judy's ham actress mother, and Monty Woolley as an exasperated backer for a play are all wonderful! It's certainly a treat to see Judy Garland and Billie Burke together before they were Dorothy and Glinda the Good Witch. The film has a witty script with Fanny Brice as the main comic influence. It's amazing how even a smaller film like this is better than any big film made now days! I'd highly recommend it!

Hm, I don't know why WB did released this DVD without restored and without any bonus features.
Ok, the picture quality and sound are very good. the movie itself is fantastic with a an amazing very young Judy Garland where sings "Mr. Mendelsohn swing" and others. Also the fantastic Fanny Brice is great as "wrong" russian housemaid. And not to forget Allan Jones. For not have a bonus features and restored/remastered - its a little bit to expensive. |
