Biography

Singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker (1917-2001) was one of the most successful blues artists of the second half of the 20th century, yet his hypnotic brand of blues was in many ways a throwback to earlier times, before rules of rhyme, meter, and chord structure became standardized. The Clarksdale, Mississippi-born musician burst on the national scene with his first record, "Boogie Chillen," which… Read more in Amazon's John Lee Hooker Store

This review is from: Everybody's Blues (Audio CD)
This is a nice album of early John Lee Hooker. Good sound too. Often his early stuff can have vocals or guitar (or both) too distorted, but not in this case. The first half of the album is solo Hooker, dark and intense with that distinctive guitar sound he made famous. The balance is a nice band session with piano and occasional saxophone. In my opinion, the first 10 years of Hookers recording career were his best and this release fits in nicely with my other recordings of his from this same era. Essential.
