5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspired Silliness, September 27, 2000
This review is from: Everybody's Crazy But Me!!! (Audio CD)
Larry Weaver must have had some truly bizarre experiences in life to make him come up with a CD like this. And to all the people responsible for putting him through such trauma, I'd just like to say: Thank you! And please keep up the good work! I'm serious. Larry has probably moved away from you and taken out a restraining order, but I have his business card if you're still looking for him. E-mail me.

These thirteen tracks of musical and pop culture parody are truly inspired silliness. From the delta blues parody sung by a crab ("Don't call my baby an invertebrate, 'cause my baby got back...'cause I'm a craaaab...") to the Charter Hospital commercial parody, I couldn't stop laughing. And Weaver's lack of vocal training makes it even funnier. (When he strained for a high note in the crab song, several windshields in the parking lot outside shattered.)

Trust me, you haven't heard anything until you hear a white boy with a strong Southern accent letting loose with a barrage of ebonics and pop culture references in "The R&B Song." Burger King, Sprint, Urkel from "Family Matters" - they're all used to describe his pain over losing a girl. ("I'm like Outback Steakhouse when it comes to loving you - there's no rules, just right! You're further away than Six Degrees of Separation - it's easier for me to connect myself with Kevin Bacon than it is to get up with you!")

I had to play "Advice From The Outhouse" a few times to catch the lines I missed the first time because I was laughing. This one is a parody of the "Wear Sunscreen" song that was played to death last year. ("Do one thing every day that scares you," Weaver advises, "like readin' a book or watchin' Oprah.") Other standouts include the promo for the After School Special "Karate Chop Chimp" and the punk anthem "Am Rebel I."

At times, the studio zaniness gets a little too much - "Country Folks Can Survive" veers out of control, and "I'm The Man of Her Dreams" never actually takes off. The latter sounds like a setup for a joke that doesn't happen. But the CD quickly moves from there into "Mr. Spicy," a combination skit and musical parody poking fun of the hip-hop obsession of big record labels. The zingers fly. This definitely works.

Weaver is already gaining national attention. He's been featured on Dr. Demento shows and albums and performed at Caroline's Comedy Club in New York and The Improvisation in Los Angeles. If that's not enough to impress you, consider this: Weaver proudly boasts that this CD was recorded on a Fostek 4-track from 1976 and an outdated Power Macintosh using Mark of the Unicorn Digital Performer 2.6. Hey, the technology has been there all this time, and it's about time someone used it. I can't believe the Grammy committee hasn't taken notice.

I first saw Larry when he opened for "Weird Al" Yankovic. He only did a few songs (South of The Border,Grandpa's Gone Gansta,I'll Be There With You, and Country Folks Can Survive) and also told some jokes. After his set was over, I rushed to the merchandise stand to buy his cd. I love every track. If you can find his first cd, pick it up too! Larry is the new generation of Comedy!

I first saw Larry perform live for a group at my college one night. He was amazingly hilarious. "The Unhappy Meal" continues to be my favorite, but I told him awhile back that he desperately needed to come out with a new CD and I am so happy he did! GET THIS! It'll keep even your parents falling out of their chairs laughing *warning* don't play while driving or you might have an accident!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Knee-Slapper, April 10, 2000
This review is from: Everybody's Crazy But Me!!! (Audio CD)
I picked up Larry's CD last week and loved it. His pop culture-based comedy is better than any of the "established" comedians I've heard lately and gives the other young Turks a real run for the money. It's like the Grammys, Miami Vice, MTV, an After School Special and TV Land all rolled into one -- gotta love it. Plus, the CD combines a bunch of different musical styles into a true "compilation" album (rap, rock, country, blues, punk, plus some). Good stuff -- for my money, you can't beat "Grandpas Gone Gangsta," "500% More Crab" and "Country Folks Can Survive."
