5.0 out of 5 stars SOLID Thoughts!
I listen to gospel & jazz 24-7. To find a message in another song is very re-freshing. Please share the name of the artist so I can find the CD upon return to the states. Signed: Stuck in Japan.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good message but...
I think something was truly lost in the interpretation of Mary Schmich's original article "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young". While Baz Luhrmann had a great idea going, the music that the lyrics were set to didn't accent the right words- in text, the part about respecting your elders has a good bit of humor to it, as if Schmich had...

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching and the real truth, May 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen (Audio CD)
I only heard this song one time; this morning on my way to work. It caught my attention right away. How good that somebody made a song out of such beautiful thoughts. That is how it should be. You live your live, nobody else lives it for you. And, you only have ONE. This is a message every parent, grandparent and friend should hand on to the people close to their hearts. Just be a good person and enjoy life with all your heart. The ups and the downs. Some people like the merry-go-round..., I like the rollercoaster

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Advice for My Daughters, Ashley and Kelsey, May 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen (Audio CD)
I first heard this touching message while riding in the car across Nebraska with my daughter, Ashley. We were returning to Grand Island, NE from Rockford, IL., following a surprise visit with her sister, Kelsey. We had just celebrated their 18th and 19th birthdays. I was in a very pensive mood and this song was just what I needed to hear. The lyrics immediately caught my attention. The artist's voice is soothing, emotionally satisfying and his words more eloquent than mine could ever be. In a very matter of fact way, he shares advice to each of us about life and how to live it. It is a good listen whether one is young or old. As a 53 year old mother, soon to be empty nested and filled with nostalgic thoughts and feelings, it will most certainly be included in my daughter's graduation video. Listeners' feelings will range from laughter and sadness and will evoke the most vivid memories of their own past and the future of their children...no advice more sage or powerful have I heard. Enjoy with an open heart and soul and a Kleenex!

I think something was truly lost in the interpretation of Mary Schmich's original article "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young". While Baz Luhrmann had a great idea going, the music that the lyrics were set to didn't accent the right words- in text, the part about respecting your elders has a good bit of humor to it, as if Schmich had simply interjected it. In the song, you can feel the line coming as soon as the word "respected" is uttered 2 seconds earlier. The music itself isn't that much different; somehow you can anticipate the various pauses in the song as if you looked ahead in a book and saw that a new paragraph or chapter was on its way. Also, the music tends to drag, making the song seem quite a bit longer than it really is.

As Kurt Vonnegut (who the song had been quickly mis-attributed to) said in the graduation speech he gave this year at a Georgia women's college, "books are sincere." The same level of sincerity that went with Schmich's article went down quite a few notches with Luhrmann's recording.
