5.0 out of 5 stars Country soul music at it's finest, March 29, 1999
This review is from: Everybody's Got a Song (Audio CD)
For lovers of country soul music Donnie Fritts is superb. Best known for his songwriting, the artists he's helped join him for backup. Dan Penn, Eddie Hinton, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, etc. all sing backup. A pioneer from the Muscle Shoals days it is great to hear him sing versions of his songs. If you enjoy artists like Dan Penn, Eddie Hinton, Buddy Miller etc. you can't be without this one!!!

This review is from: Everybody's Got a Song (Audio CD)
Donnie Fritts earns his place in music history for the great songs he's written. On John Prine's Oh Boy label, this 1997 CD begins with Donnie & John sharing lead vocals on an old timey rocker with Stephen Bruton's stinging electric lead, "I'm going cuckoo; I need a new do, correct me if I'm wrong." Dan Penn joins Donnie for "Hello Memphis," a Stax country soul track. Tony Joe White smokes on the swamp voodoo for double entendre in "Short End of the Stick," "At the dinner table, I knew I had to grab my biscuit quick; It didn't take too long to know I was on the short end of the stick." The late great Waylon Jennings joins Donnie on the raw "A Damn Good Country Song." Lucinda Williams joins Donnie for the classic "Breakfast in Bed" that's been recorded by Shelby Lynne, Ana Egge, Joan Osborne & Dusty Springfield on her classic Dusty in Memphis album. Donnie sings the classic "We Had It All" that was graced on recordings by Ray Charles & Rita Coolidge. Kris Kristofferson joins Donnie on the title track. Fritts' voice will never earn him the Mr. Perfect Pitch award, but is warm with experience. "Everybody's Got a Song" is a special disc, worth discovering. Enjoy!
