5.0 out of 5 stars HARD TO BEAT May 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Wow. This is what the Tedeschi/Trucks Band is all about. If this release doesn't spread the word far and wide about this band-I don't know what will. Fans who've heard this band live already know-but if you're wondering what all the talk is about-look no further.

In this day and age of sound-alike pop/dance music, this band has chosen it's own path-playing the music they love-and it shows. The rhythm section does what it's supposed to do-push everything along while still coloring the overall sound. Kofi Burbridge's keyboards, along with his brother's bass work and the band's backbone, their drum sound, is full and expressive yet well thought out. The soulful horns (especially the trumpet and trombone) aren't merely filler or window dressing. Their role is to add depth and feeling to the music-which they do. The vocals too, fit in well. Mattison and Rivers' harmonies are at times like another instrument.

And Susan Tedeschi isn't there just because she's Trucks' wife. Her fine vocals give the band another instrument to incorporate into their sound. And her guitar playing speaks for itself. Anyone who thinks a woman can't play the guitar in this kind of setting needs to hear this. Her style both complements and acts as a foil for Trucks slide playing. And Derek Trucks-whose abilities and feel for the music-surely place him at the top of the list of great slide guitarists. After a few bars you know you're listening to a master of the guitar. His solos can be exciting bordering on intense, yet there's also a subtly in his playing. His tone, his choice of notes and chords, even the spaces and pauses between notes only add to the intensity of his style.

And the songs. Listen to Wonder's "Uptight", or Fred Neil's (made popular by Nilsson) "Everybody's Talkin'", the LOVIN' SPOONFUL's "Darling Be Home Soon", or Bill Withers' (!) tune-all slightly different genres, but all stamped with this band's sound. Even on the 2003 live set from DTB at the Georgia Theater, they included a cover of "Freddie's Dead". Since then the band has refined their approach and sound even further. Their song choices (along with their playing abilities) are a large part of why this band is so exciting, so interesting and unique, and (yes) so fun to listen to. Even "Wade In the Water" has new life breathed into it. They bend and shape a song into something uniquely their own and infuse it with their own identity. At times I'm reminded of the GRATEFUL DEAD, who also incorporated songs seemingly outside their boundaries, and stamped them with their own sound. That and there's a feeling that this music unfolds and happens like it's supposed to do. No grandstanding, no aimless noodling-everything is aimed at making the best possible music. The choices of band originals is also very astute. Playing these songs live has given the band the chance to refine them slightly-which has improved already good songs into something even better. The small refinements here and there show that the band isn't content to rest on it's laurels-they're always looking at how to improve their music.

Fans (especially those who've heard the band live) will have their own favorites. And if you haven't heard them live, this well chosen collection of songs is truly representative of where the band is now, and (hopefully) gives some indication of where they're heading. This is exciting, soulful, fun music. The packaging and booklet contain several good color photos of the band. And at this low price-it's a steal. When you get your hands on this set, try listening to it repeatedly over the next few days, and really let this music sink into your musical soul. It's good for what ails you, and a panacea for all the shiny, thumping, plastic music that seems to be everywhere. This is a band at the top of their form. One listen and you'll hear why.

The word "evolve" has been tossed around a lot lately, usually in politics. According to the Free Online Dictionary, to evolve is: "to develop or achieve gradually; to evolve a style of one's own". "Live", the newest release by the Tedeschi Trucks band is a perfect example of musical evolution- the group has gradually changed from a song oriented collective to the type of improvisational jam band that first introduced Derek Trucks to the public.

The Tedeschi Trucks band is unlike anyone else on the scene today. With last year's "Revelator", Susan Tedeschi and Derek gave us twelve originals (thirteen counting the hidden track "Ghost Light") where songwriting was the key, Susan's vocals and guitar embellished by Derek's masterful slide. Every member of the eleven piece band was integral to success of course, but the overall vibe was romantic and song oriented. With "Live", the band stretches out on every track, much like Derek Trucks Band's "Live at the Georgia Theatre".

The best albums always grab you from the start. The title track, a 1969 hit for Harry Nilsson, opens with a catchy guitar riff, reminiscent of Warren Haynes' "Man in Motion". Susan has made this song her own with her impassioned reading. "Midnight in Harlem" has a couple of surprises- a "Swamp Raga Intro" is followed by the opening notes to Duane Allman's "Little Martha". The crowd roars its approval before "Harlem" kicks in.

"Learn How to Love" is a well written original with Susan yearning of "tired of living without/ when others have so much/ if I could find someone/ to bring that lovin' touch", but the real treat here is the guitar interplay between this talented couple. Most fans are aware of Derek's abilities, but Susan matches her husband note for note on this workout.

The Elmore James classic "Rollin' and Tumblin'" is updated, again featuring both guitars and the keyboards of Kofi Burbridge. The tandem drumming of Tyler Greenwell and J.J. Johnson, along with bassist Oteil Burbridge push the band into the tough "Nobody's Free", another original. John Sebastian's "Darling Be Home Soon" is a surprising cover, but Tedeschi Trucks have proven they can reinvent anything put in front of them.

"That Did It" is the Pearl Woods composition made famous by Bobby Bland. I've seen Susan live and she has always delivered as a singer, but I've never heard her with the grit she displays here. The background vocals of Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers are perfect support for Susan. Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" is another great cover featuring saxophonist Kebbi Williams, trombonist Sanders Sermons and trumpeter Maurice Brown, who gets the spotlight with an extended solo. Both drummers get to stretch out, and Oteil displays his bass chops while scat singing which is his trademark when performing with the Allman Brothers.

"Love Has Something to Say" from "Revelator" segues nicely into Bill Withers'"Kissing My Love", featuring the vocals of trombonist Sermons. Derek plays one of his best solos of the disc on this track.

"Wade in the Water" takes us to church, where Susan and company sing the gospel with reverence. Derek answers each verse with understated slide. while Kofi Burbridge rides above it all on flute. You can't help but see the light.

These shows were recorded over three late October nights in Toronto, Washington D.C. and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Coincidentally, the Bridgeport show was recorded on the fortieth anniversary of Duane Allman's passing. It's almost as if Duane passed the torch to Tedeschi Trucks- and they're holding it high.

3.0 out of 5 stars High Expectations February 1, 2013

Having seen the Tedeschi Trucks band on the 2010 Eric Clapton Crossroads DVD, I bought Revelator- which is a very good album.
I bought the "Everybody's Talkin" live CD based on the strength of the Crossroads work and Revelator- I listened to preview of a couple of the tracks which were debuted on Revelator, but played live. They sounded pretty good so I went ahead and bought the live album. I should have listened to the clips for all the music - as a lot of live recorded music, this album has some of what is tough for me- extended drum solos, fairly inaudible intros, and slow tracks. Gaps between songs are different if experienced live I guess. The last song on side 1 I cut out altogether when recording the CD to another medium.

Don't get me wrong. I love the group, Susan is a great singer, and Derek is a great slide player. This album though just doesnt do it for me. I guess I can try to listen to it several times to see if it grows on me....
