From Library Journal
Based partially on the Chambers First Learners' Dictionary (1978) and devoted exclusively to American English, this accessible reference has been compiled by specialists in linguistics, lexicography, reference, and bilingual education. The work is intended as a compact source similar to NTC's Compact English Dictionary (LJ 11/1/00) but is even more simplified, presenting 5500 of the most basic, frequently used words without confusing devices such as abbreviations and codes. Stripped of any frills, the brief entries include spelling, phonetic pronunciation according to the International Phonetic Alphabet, grammatical parts of speech, few multiple definitions, and examples only for the most difficult words. Also included are a table of irregular verbs and lists of important facts about the United States. Whether as an educational tool or a portable resource, this handy reference is recommended for academic and public library collections with a considerable ESL population.
